To think piercing a child's ears with a gun should be banned?

Okay, people must insist it's done because xyz

Mine was done with a needle as a tiny baby. However, it appears most tattoo places that do piercings won't touch a baby/small child.

But I've always known guns are worse. A tattoo/piercing artist I know personally just posted this image on FB

She says the gun isn't a clean go, and can cause damage to surrounding tissue etc.

AIBU to wonder why this is still allowed, with a gun, because it can cause so many issues later on?

Obviously it would be best if people didn't bother getting small children done at all but at least abolish bloody guns?!

(The first image is a needle, the second a gun)

I agree, gun piercing is minging and horrible.

gamerchick · 12/08/2021 11:41

I'd ban it completely. Totally unnecessary to poke holes in babies.

ChampagneWorries · 12/08/2021 11:41

I think piercing children's ears under the age of 10 should be banned full stop

RedHelenB · 12/08/2021 11:44

My kids had theirs done with a gun aged 7 and have been fine. like nearly everyone else they know. Seems like it's a real mumsnet bee in the bonnet to have to go to a ratio parlour to get them done with a needle!

I agree but don't think we'll get there - So a compromise of at least doing it the safest way possible seems best

Totally agree - should be banned.

Martianworld · 12/08/2021 11:46

I'd ban all piercings til children are 16. I'd be happy to say 18 but that's hard to justify when it's legal to have a baby.

This completely. Until the child can give informed consent I think it's totally unnecessary.

Also agree with this. I’ve had gun and needle ear piercings and would never have another gun one nor allow my children to!
TheGumption · 12/08/2021 11:47

I don't think piercing should be allowed at all until kids are 10.. maybe older.
Wait for someone to argue its fine if it's cultural though OP. Unnecessary pain is fine to inflict on a baby or child if it's cultural.

SlateCoaster · 12/08/2021 11:48

Why does any parent think it's acceptable to inflict pain on their child in the name of fashion/vanity/social trends?!

I will NOT be having my child's ears pierced. It's my child's body, not mine. If my child wants to have their ears pierced when they are older - that's THEIR choice.

SionnachRua · 12/08/2021 11:48

Agreed and piercings should be done by a proper piercer, not some 17 year old in Claire's Accessories. Those gun things are so unhygienic.

womaninatightspot · 12/08/2021 11:48

Not a massive fan of piercing kids ears. I got mines done in high school and it was very much my choice. I reckon Gillicks should apply to non-essential stuff like piercing

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/08/2021 11:49

Guns are safest and easiest for use by an untrained person - which, considering most piercing and tattoo studios refuse to pierce small children, means they’re the only real option, since it would be more dangerous to let the Saturday girl at Claire’s Accessories lose with a piercing needle.

Parents who want their children pierced will have it done regardless and if guns, and therefore an easy and cheap way to get pierced, are banned then I can only imagine a roaring increase in home piercing.

Justcallmebebes · 12/08/2021 11:49

I'm another for banning piercings until 10 or over. It's barbaric piercing little babies' ears

41sunnydays · 12/08/2021 11:50

Do guns really hurt children?

My DD had her ears pierced at age 2.5 and we didn't even get a tear or cry

MissTrip82 · 12/08/2021 11:53

I’m not sure a stylised drawing is evidence of anything at all.

I preferred having my ears and nose done with a gun. Rather a quick pinch than a sharp needle.

Dixiechickonhols · 12/08/2021 11:55

I’m always confused by reference to gun. I had mine pierced for first time age 45 at a jewellers. It wasn’t a gun it was a tiny stapler sort of thing that pressed the earring through. I barely felt it, - nothing like a flu injection, eyebrows threaded or nettle sting you actually feel.
I didn’t have mine done as a child as my Mum thought it was common.

Legomania · 12/08/2021 11:55

Yes but what would you rather aim at a wriggly child (since people will persist in doing it)? Even though I know tattooists hate them (and I have had several piercings done in a tattoo parlour) , there hasn't exactly been a spate of kids with their lobes falling off due to Claire's Accessories etc.

Hmm you make a very good point

Claire's done my ears and nose with a gun and both were painless. My friend had her nose pierced with a needle and said it hurt.

CheekyChewinski · 12/08/2021 11:57

Guns are grim.
