To think piercing a child's ears with a gun should be banned?

Okay, people must insist it's done because xyz

Mine was done with a needle as a tiny baby. However, it appears most tattoo places that do piercings won't touch a baby/small child.

But I've always known guns are worse. A tattoo/piercing artist I know personally just posted this image on FB

She says the gun isn't a clean go, and can cause damage to surrounding tissue etc.

AIBU to wonder why this is still allowed, with a gun, because it can cause so many issues later on?

Obviously it would be best if people didn't bother getting small children done at all but at least abolish bloody guns?!

I did my own, numbed my lobes with an ice pop from the freezer and shoved a pair of earrings through. I vaguely remember using surgical spirit but I do remember the earrings weren't even real silver. I had no problems at all unlike the ones I had done professionally and was told to turn them 6x a day and got a big infection.

Bumblenums1234 · 12/08/2021 14:42

@BungleandGeorge

I’m confused, they don’t use a normal earring in the gun and just jab it through? They have a pointed end just like a needle. I can quite believe a skilled person can be more accurate and gentle but the two things are not so different?
They use a hollow needle when they peirce, they aren't just shoving through a solid bit of metal. Plus they are single use so MUCH more hygienic than the grot stuck in the Claires equipment.
@lovesthosebeeps think what you want! No one should tell you what to think.
So please don't try and tell others that ear piercing guns should be banned! My daughter is 6 and has chosen to have hers done. Single use, perfectly safe and she's had no infection. Get a real worry!!
It was just a discussion. You will see from my previous posts that I agreed with a poster about something regarding gun use and said she had a good point

@Nivealove

I will Pierce my child's ears no matter the age. When some of these posters allow some of their children to do drive/ drink at a young age. The British culture is odd.
You must not be entirely familiar with the meaning of "culture" - what a silly, silly comment! Confused

If it's ok to make a hole in a baby or child's ears without their consent....why stop there!? How about piercing their belly button too and also nose and eyebrow?

therocinante · 12/08/2021 14:48

Horrified at the people having their noses done with a gun... it's cartilage, should absolutely be done with a needle!

I don’t believe there’s a legal lower age limit for any kind of piercing except genital piercing. And since we don’t see babies with eyebrow and bellybutton piercings, would suggest there’s no risk that baby ear piercing is a gateway.

Mine were done with a dun 40 years ago. My daughter's were done with a gun at Claire's (two staff members so both ears done at once). Both absolutely fine.

lazymare · 12/08/2021 14:53

*gun, obvs

iwannabelikeyouhoohoo · 12/08/2021 14:54

I had my ears pierced at Claire’s when I was 15, and it didn’t hurt at all - just a pinch (and I’m a total wuss). No issues, although I do realise that doesn’t mean everyone has the same experience. Agreed that ear piercing should be banned to a minimum age of 12.

sashh · 12/08/2021 14:55

Nose piercing guns are a thing, they are fairly new but they have been developed.

thereisonlyoneofme · 12/08/2021 14:56

You are not allowed to slap a child but allowed to pierce its ears. I know they have injections etc, but thats not a vanity thing

iwannabelikeyouhoohoo · 12/08/2021 14:58

I’ve got to say, the photo in your OP seems purposely emotive and I’d be interested in a fact check. It looks like someone who would ban guns has been commissioned to do a sketch and doesn’t look particularly accurate.

gogohm · 12/08/2021 15:10

Had mine done at Claire's many moons ago, it was just fine. Dd has recently had her done too (at 18)

Brefugee · 12/08/2021 15:12

Urghh to PP who had a needle piercing but was sure nothing was sterile. Why?

DCs both had needle piercings at out tattoo studio (by the resident piercer) everything completely sterile and very well done.

I've had gun piercings (OK) and a kind of weird needle thing on a stick (can't describe it) done in a cheap grimy jewelery shop on a Saturday morning for 50p.you had to provide your own self-sterilised earring (which they would inspect, many rejected). This was about 1978 and the queues were right down the street.

Have also got some "needle into cork" self piercings. "pain relief" (mitigation) was either snow or Waspeeze. All OK but more due to luck 😁

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/08/2021 15:18

I had my ears done with a gun when I was 10. I asked for it so my mum agreed.
it was nothing.
I would've run a mile if they'd tried it with a needle.

my DD is 9. she hasn't asked yet so I've not thought about this until now.

I think piercing children's ears under a certain age should be banned, but this type of comment is OTT

Piercing a simple, classic lobe piercing on each ear is completely different to giving them a belly button piercing! Or nose piercing!

Most women I know have a simple ear piercing

OP posts:
PattyPan · 12/08/2021 15:34

I had my ears pierced with a gun at 11 (after begging my mum) and my seconds also with a gun at 15. It barely hurt and I’ve had no problems with the piercings at all - this is the first I’ve heard of it not being a ‘clean go’. Mine were done at a local beauty parlour.
I agree parents shouldn’t get their child’s ears pierced before they are old enough to consent though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/08/2021 15:35

There's a notice up in Claires that they wont pierce a child who is distressed but many times I've witnessed a crying , resistant child being almost pinned down by the parent .
They always seem to site the chair in the window so we can all have a gawp . Sad

My DD was leaving Yr 6 when she had hers done , so old ennough ( IMO) to choose . She knew about keeoing them clean and aftercare .

She's had gun (lobes) and needle ( tragus , helix, belly)
Tattoo parlour is as far away from Claires as you can imagine !

DD is not a fan of needles (understatement) bu said you only hear a crunch , worse bit i the fiddly fastening of the stud .

Vitallyli · 12/08/2021 15:36

The benefit of the gun is that you don't need to fiddle with freshly pierced ear, it's done much quicker. I'd let parents decide which one they prefer. I had my ears pierced with a gun and second holes with a needle later. Both were fine.

paddlingon · 12/08/2021 15:39

I had a gun as an adult.
Dd a needle as a teen.

She had a lot more issues than I did.
Obviously this is just one anecdote but I'm
not that convinced there is a lot of merit to using a needle.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 12/08/2021 15:54

@Martianworld

I'd ban all piercings til children are 16. I'd be happy to say 18 but that's hard to justify when it's legal to have a baby.
I’d like it to be banned until 18 but would be happy with 16 too.
dottydodah · 12/08/2021 15:56

I didnt realise children under 10 were allowed ear piercings like this. Obv not up on these things! DM said I had to wait until I was 17 to get them done!

TurquoiseDragon · 12/08/2021 16:01

@ChampagneWorries

I think piercing children's ears under the age of 10 should be banned full stop
I agree. DD had hers done at 10, after we'd had a proper talk about care.

She's got other piercings now, we both go to a tattoo parlour if we want any more done.
