This jury are on glue [Content warning added by MNHQ: child abuse]

How, just how, can this jury decide that this couple didn't murder the child, but "only" guilty of manslaughter?

The mother had threatened to kill her in a text a few days previously, and the child was found with multiple broken ribs and sternum and other fractures from previous abuse, but the jury decided her death wasn't murder? What the actual fuck? Whoever the defence lawyer was really stitched up the jury, or they were on glue...how can any sane person say this wasn't premeditated?

It’s because they don’t know which one of them did it. They don’t have evidence either way of who did it and neither have admitted it.

Pissinthepottyplease · 06/08/2021 23:24

The jury would have been directed by the judge. Unless you have seen all the evidence and understand what is required legally for murder then you can’t give an informed comment.

Good quality defence layers are essential for a robust legal system. If a defendant does not have a good legal defence then you can claim to have been wrongly convicted.

LowlytheWorm · 06/08/2021 23:26

If they went for murder only one might get jailed. This way both do. Hopefully for the maximum sentences and hopefully they have a very nice welcome in jail as I’m sure child
Killers do…

DramaAlpaca · 06/08/2021 23:27

If the prosecution had gone for a murder charge there was a very strong chance of an acquittal because of the lack of direct evidence and no admissions of guilt. The manslaughter charge made it much more likely that they would be convicted.

SemperIdem · 06/08/2021 23:29

The jury will have seen evidence not shared by the media.

This. Fucking awful and they both deserve a murder charge morally but legally this was the best way to ensure both ended up behind bars for the maximum amount of time possible in the (hugely flawed) system.

That poor little girl. Those texts made me cry. Disgusting, unthinkably disgusting.

gardeninggirl68 · 06/08/2021 23:31

dont blame the jury!! have you done jury service before?

and the crimes committed...theres a lot more to it all than what the media releases to the public you know. A lot

you are in no position to judge

Yellowcrockpot · 06/08/2021 23:31

No matter the sentence, I hope they live thier days in turmoil knowing what they did.
Sentencing never seems fair in these circumstances, but we were not the jury or the judge.
My heart breaks for that innocent little girl.

DynamoKev · 06/08/2021 23:32

Of course they aren’t “on glue” - what a ridiculous thing to say.

Houseofvelour · 06/08/2021 23:41

I've been completely heartbroken over this little girl's story and the story of the baby abandoned for 6 days. It's absolutely devastating and I can't stop crying about it.
I'm giving my children twice the amount of hugs atm.

The main thing that bothers me is that the girl that abandoned her child for six days has been sentenced to 9 years in prison where has the couple that literally beat that poor baby to death are only getting 3 years, of which they'll likely only do 2!?!?
THEY SHOULD ALL SPEND THE REST OF THEIR NATURAL BORN LIVES ROTTING IN JAIL CELLS!
I hope they rot in hell for eternity when they leave this life.

LoveSummerNotIcecream · 06/08/2021 23:47

They got 15 years, not 3.

Terhou · 06/08/2021 23:51

Where are you getting that from? The report says they got 15 and 14 years with a directive that they must serve at least two thirds of the sentence before anyone begins to think about parole.

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I don't want to read the article - I often don't in these circumstances, anything to do with children or animals. That's horrendous!!! I hate what has happened to our absolutely fucking shit "justice" system in this world!

100% agree

I think child killers should get the maximum sentence
There is no excuse
All this shit about poor upbringing - boohoo - lots of people have shit upbringing but don’t do heinous deeds like this

They have done a terrible crime , they should do a terrible crime

But no ,the girl in this case will probs go to a female prison , get beat up a few times then learn to be a hairdresser or whatever other svq courses they are running in jail.

It actually infuriates me.

TinkleTongs · 06/08/2021 23:56

*terrible time not crime

MurielSpriggs · 07/08/2021 00:15

The jury heard all the evidence for days, heard witnesses, listened to them being cross-examined, had the law explained to them by the judge. You've read a couple of hundred words on Sky news. How can you be better placed than them? Are you on glue?

AJ1425 · 07/08/2021 00:23

The jury don't decide what the defendants are charged with.

Houseofvelour · 07/08/2021 00:28

@LoveSummerNotIcecream

I must've misread and I'm so happy that I did. 15 years is still not enough but so much better than what I thought. I honestly hope that they never see the light of day again.
Pottedpalm · 07/08/2021 00:29

‘On glue’?

midsomermurderess · 07/08/2021 00:31

The jury didn't choose the charge.

wombat1a · 07/08/2021 00:32

Jurys decide guilty/NG for the charges put against the people put in front of them. They don't decide what the charges are, For murder you have to be specific that person X murdered person Y, in this case either could have done it, neither confessed, it was not clear which one it was, so both get charged with something that can be 'proven'.

KenAdams · 07/08/2021 00:35

Er, no. Juries don't work like they do in TV dramas. Don't try and blame the jury here, if there was no proof which one of them did it, the conviction would likely have been successfully appealed. You have no idea what evidence the jury saw. Sometimes evidence or things that happen in the courtroom are press embargoed too so a news article won't tell you the full story. I used to work as a Court Clerk and what actually happens and what is reported in a case or in court can be very, very different.

uktrippin · 07/08/2021 00:37

"Stitched up" and "on glue"? Confused

ElBarstardoMonkfish · 07/08/2021 00:38

What about this absolute… fucker… who left her darling child to starve to death. Sentenced to 9 years! www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/08/06/teenage-mother-jailed-nine-years-death-toddler-abandoned-days/

Cannot believe the sentences handed to child abusers/murders tbh

Monkeybusinesss · 07/08/2021 00:39

God I wish our justice system was run by a random on mumsnet “on instinct”

Would be much better #justice Hmm
