To think Anne Robinson is acting like her Weakest Link persona when presenting Countdown?

And to have gone off it?

I remember reading somewhere before where she was quoted saying that she’ll be nothing like the host she was on The Weakest Link, but this is the third episode I’ve seen from her and she IS acting like her persona on TWL. Not AS rude but she’s constantly belittling the contestants, interrupting them, bickering with them, jostling them to do impressions and make fools of themselves like the contestants on TWL even though they are clearly uncomfortable and it’s clearly not that type of show or contestants. Does anyone else agree or do you prefer/like her as the host?

Surely she will lose the job soon? The viewing figures will go down.

Agree it’s not a persona, it’s the real her!

Maireas · 21/07/2021 17:25

It makes me cross when I think of all the people that could do a good job, if given the opportunity.

My parents record every episode of Countdown and fast forward through the chat (have done for years). They loathe AR on the show and are counting the hours until she leaves, as they have explained to me at some length several times now. She seems to have totally misjudged the tone of the show and the likely audience. What were the producers thinking of?

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 21/07/2021 17:37

Well everything is about ‘creating controversy’, manufacturing’Twitter wars’, getting column inches, winding up the ‘anti-woke warriors’ now. I suspect that’s why the hired her to ‘shake things up’ and feed into the ‘culture war’.

Maireas · 21/07/2021 17:44

It's so tiresome, isn't it? Just get someone pleasant and interested in the game who can keep the chat going. It's an afternoon quiz show.

Yiayoula · 21/07/2021 17:47

Tense and uncomfortable a perfect description.
Sadly, will not be watching for as long as Anne Robinson is hosting.
Does anyone know if she is contracted for just the present series , or ( please no ! ) likely to be a permanent fixture ?

Starisnotanumber · 21/07/2021 18:17

Reports in paper today say she's going and being replaced by Trevor Mcdonald.

Maireas · 21/07/2021 18:20

Unfortunately, Trevor MacDonald is only doing one show, in September, during a week when Black presenters are replacing white ones in a sort of awareness event.
I'd love him to replace her permanently!

Starisnotanumber · 21/07/2021 18:21

Yay!

He always seems lovely and calm :)

See my post, @Laiste

Yeah same. He'll be much better imo. Countdown is comforting, familiar afternoon quiz game. There's no need for the bad atmosphere which she seems to create.

Oh ... bloody hell :(

But - it might help push her out quicker? We all need to get on the day after and leave rave reviews of him.

I bet he'll be lovely. I find his news delivery really relaxing!

Headspinning188 · 21/07/2021 18:44

Loved Colin Murray. He seemed genuinely pleased and excited when the contestants did well and had the right balance of professionalism and cheeky charm!

Maireas · 21/07/2021 18:48

I agree, Headspinning plus he joined in trying to get words!

brokenbiscuitsx · 21/07/2021 20:07

@IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves

It's not a persona. It's who she actually is. She's a deeply unpleasant woman.

Apparently Talk Radio have chosen Jeremy Kyle for their Drive Time slot. Choose something popular and shoehorn your choice into it and when people don't switch off because of habit and a particular liking for a format, claim it's the people's choice..Sad

Mountainpika · 22/07/2021 10:04

Sooner she's replaced with someone who respects other people, the better.

I hope he gets to do Have I Got News For You. He’d be brilliant.

This. The thing is Countdown has a loved format and a loved tone. Where the presenters are genuinely interested in the contestants and are delighted when they do well. AR doesn't get it.
derxa · 22/07/2021 10:54

I watch every day. Anne is irritating but I'm gradually warming to her. The rowing man enjoyed the chat. Marcus Brigstocke's partner is annoying me much more. Pretending she got words when she didn't really. Her shows sound like hell on Earth.

PercyPigandMe · 22/07/2021 11:08

I really like that a woman - and an older one at that - has been given this role. And I don't mind Anne particularly, she's settling in now and isn't as stilted as she was.

She is acerbic so you know what you're getting with her and I think over time she will grow into the role

However I sometimes find her a bit 'awkward of delivery' and it can make it a bit tense to watch Grin

On balance though, great that a woman in her 70s is doing it and I think in time the plusses will outweigh the minuses

Maireas · 22/07/2021 11:10

I think it needs Susie Dent back, @derxa. That would balance it more. I really enjoy her origins of words. At the moment we're just getting more time with Rachel Parris.

Agreed. Susie's having a bit of a hard time atm I believe. She's going through a divorce. I loved Nick Hewer's style where he didn't make himself 'the star.
