How’s the supermarkets?

I’m really nervous to go out today all of a sudden! I am heavily pregnant and I am massively for life getting back to normal and no lockdowns all that but with this freedom day I have to say I am feeling very nervous.

Covid seems absolutely rife where I am for the first time really, I always normally have my food shop delivered but pretty much everything was out of stock on my delivery on Saturday. My husband works away and I need to do a food shop for the kids so I absolutely have to go today, long story short how is it? Carnage? Safe?

For full disclosure I’m not vaccinated

I’ve been to Tesco. The exit / entry barriers are gone and the big ‘wear a mask’ signs have been removed. Most people were wearing masks. It wasn’t much different from last week tbh.

Youdiditanyway · 19/07/2021 09:14

I understand your anxiety because I was pregnant last year and I didn’t leave the house at all until after he was born aside from midwife appointments. I didn’t actually go inside a shop for a year so going back in one was very weird!

I doubt they will be absolute carnage today fwiw, it’s just a regular Monday so a normal work day for most.

JaceLancs · 19/07/2021 09:14

Everywhere is quiet - signs down but some people are choosing to wear masks - most of the staff aren’t

Lunariagal · 19/07/2021 09:15

Just back from asda. No barriers at the entrance. Most people wearing masks, which was very encouraging.

Justcallmebebes · 19/07/2021 09:17

Called into Sainsburys before work. They were taking all the social distancing signs down but everyone was still wearing masks. Same old really

HugeAckmansWife · 19/07/2021 09:24

Big tescos.. Most staff aren't wearing masks, customers 50/50. It's pretty quiet so easy to keep a distance if you want to.

Piecrust32 · 19/07/2021 09:26

Im Also heavily pregnant, just returned from sainsburys

All barriers/signs gone , people still wearing masks and giving each other space

Not much difference to be honest

weegiepower · 19/07/2021 09:41

Everyone was wearing masks in Sainsbury's just now, didn't see anyone not

Lockheart · 19/07/2021 09:42

Why don't you just call the supermarket in question and ask?

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 19/07/2021 09:44

Just back from my local Tesco superstore who still have all barriers in place, and still have security at the door insisting on face masks. The store itself was pretty quiet and I didn’t see one person not wearing a mask.

Ilikechips · 19/07/2021 10:01

Thank you everyone.

@Lockheart Im sure the staff are really busy and whoever answers the phone will more than likely not be on the shop floor so wouldn’t be able to see anyway. And surely a retailer who wants you to spend money will tell you whatever they think you want to hear.. people on here will say what they see 🤷🏽‍♀️

Yes but what they see may be of bugger all use to you. I could tell you what my Tescos in Aberdeen is like (for example) but it's not of much use to you if you're going to Waitrose in Bristol, say.

The actual supermarket will be able to tell you how busy they are and what are their quieter times, which will be much more helpful.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 19/07/2021 10:15

Where is THE supermarket? What supermarket?

M&S in Notting Hill Gate was fine, is that any use to you?

TotorosCatBus · 19/07/2021 10:17

Can you go at a quiet time like 11pm or 7am?

iwilldoitsoon · 19/07/2021 10:18

I'm in Scotland so doesn't apply and I wasn't even going to post on this thread. I was reading it to get a general idea of how people are doing things now the rules have changed in England. Why is OP not able to ask about other people's supermarket experiences?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 19/07/2021 10:24

My Uber drivers didn’t wear a mask this morning. Most of the people in the supermarket did. It wasn’t busy but it was 8:45am.

Lemonmelonsun · 19/07/2021 10:27

It's a pr stunt gone dramatically wrong, it's not feeding day is it, it was supposed to be extremely liquid cases after all these tough lock downs and that's not happened
..

mrswhiplington · 19/07/2021 10:30

Went to Tesco and Home Bargains about 9.30. Most people were wearing masks including me.

Nightwing · 19/07/2021 10:31

I walked through my town centre today and didn’t see a decline in mask wearing- I was surprised that most are sticking to wearing them.

Is there any need to be like this? Can't you understand that people might have concerns today?
Wanttocry · 19/07/2021 10:35

A quick look at Twitter shows a lot of people saying that the vast majority of people are still wearing masks in supermarkets they’ve been to.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 19/07/2021 10:35

It's still very quiet here, I'm in the Sainsbury's café right now. Most people are wearing masks. I don't shop in the afternoons on school days, but that's when I'd expect it to get busy. I have a friend who works in the main store, I'll ask her for an update later and report back.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 19/07/2021 10:37

Ok I did sound a bit abrupt, not really meaning to. But obviously supermarkets up and down the country are going to be really different and if OP is worried then best to go at a quiet time, as a lot of people anxious about covid (and she’s not vaccinated) did before today.

Rosebel · 19/07/2021 11:07

I work in a supermarket and the majority of staff have said they aren't wearing masks now.
I wore one when I went shopping like most others but I won't at work. I'm technically except anyway and really struggled to breathe after 7 hours in a mask.

knittingaddict · 19/07/2021 11:08

That's interesting. My son in law had a message or something to say that uber would still be enforcing the mask rule.
