AIBU To ask if the term Mixed-Race is outdated

CambridgeEntry2022 · 18/07/2021 00:42

I don't want to cause offence by using outdated terms. Would it be more appropriate to use the term multi racial?

My neighbour is perfectly happy to refer to her kids as mixed race 🤷🏻‍♀️
Why do perfectly inoffensive, valid descriptors suddenly become problematic?
It's hard to keep up these days.

AddsVsGeorgs · 18/07/2021 00:47

What would you use instead?

Mixed race is mixed race !!!

Ursulasunderstudy · 18/07/2021 00:51

You need to use Dual Heritage not mixed race.

PumpkinKlNG · 18/07/2021 00:53

I’m mixed race and prefer to be called mixed race, I’m guessing you are white? Seems to be white people that take offence on behalf of others, I do not like dual heritage or bi racial even worse. I will continue to refer to myself as mixed race.

Pregnantmama93 · 18/07/2021 00:54

I am "mixed race" and don't have a problem with it. Not sure if I like the term multi racial, but that's just me. Half caste is outdated and would offend me.

CambridgeEntry2022 · 18/07/2021 00:55

@Ursulasunderstudy

You need to use Dual Heritage not mixed race.
Thank you. I would like to make sure I am using the correct language and don't want to be I advertently causing offence to anyone.

@Ursulasunderstudy

You need to use Dual Heritage not mixed race.
Why, though, when mixed race people have no issue with the term?
Pregnantmama93 · 18/07/2021 00:56

@Ursulasunderstudy I wouldn't like to be called dual heritage I refer to myself as mixed race.

PumpkinKlNG · 18/07/2021 00:57

Same people saying black people should be called bame or person of colour yet every single black person I know calls themselves black just like every single mixed race person I know calls themselves mixed race, why do white people keep telling us what terms we should call ourselves 🤨

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2021 00:57

@Ursulasunderstudy

You need to use Dual Heritage not mixed race.
She needs to in which circumstance?

Are you talking specifically about work, form filling, official situations or something else?

Even then, all of the above often state 'mixed race', rather than dual heritage.

Thank you for this post. That is informative and useful to know.

This is my mums argument... for continuing to use the term ‘half cast’ Blush

Best to adapt and change with the times IMO...

Pregnantmama93 · 18/07/2021 01:01

@PumpkinKlNG THANK YOU!!GrinHalo

Kamma89 · 18/07/2021 01:03

Fuck dual heritage or bi racial. Both my parents are mixed race so I'm actually a mix of 5...you can cause offence by trying not to. Be polite, use generic terms, if someone corrects you & asks to be referred to in a certain way do that.

WorraLiberty · 18/07/2021 01:05

Also, I'm of dual heritage but I'm not mixed race.

BeenThruMoreThanALilBit · 18/07/2021 01:07

Heritage is completely different from race Confused

I have a single heritage and at least four races in me

Fauvist · 18/07/2021 01:10

I am mixed race and think it is a fucking horrible term. So we are not all OK with it. Would far prefer mixed or dual heritage.

There is just one race, the human race.

Fauvist · 18/07/2021 01:12

I would not ever refer to myself as mixed race generally. I only used that term as it's part of the thread.

I don't think it's accurate or helpful.

NotJustfriends · 18/07/2021 01:18

Mixed race is fine? What's offensive?

eachtigertires · 18/07/2021 01:22

Are heritage and race not different things though? I would say my daughter is mixed heritage but she isn’t mixed race. Heritage meaning cultural background and race mostly referring to the way a person looks? Please correct me if I’m wrong though, this is my current understanding.

Rheia1983 · 18/07/2021 01:22

I'm mixed race and refer to myself as such. I've also used the term mongrel to refer to my background.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/07/2021 01:24

What is the context @CambridgeEntry2022?

FlumpyLump · 18/07/2021 01:25

I come from a white, black and Romany background (although I am very pale myself) and my son's father is Filipino. My son is definitely a mix of races x

Mixed race/mixed heritage is better than saying half caste. That seems like you are half a person 😔
Dual heritage is wrong because if you are the child of 2 mixed race parents your have more than 2 races.

As someone who is mixed race I would say don’t overthink it. You may inadvertently dig yourself a hole. 🙂
