Neighbours new puppy - barks ALL day

BridgetGetTheGin · 17/07/2021 09:33

Our neighbours recently got a new puppy. It barks all day and all night. It's a beautiful vizzler but it's becoming very tedious.

My son wakes up at 6am every morning due to the puppy being let out - previously he slept till 8am. He can't sleep either and keeps pretending to bark or saying 'doggy' till about 9pm when the dog goes to sleep.

I don't know what to do. The neighbours are new and I recently introduced myself, but the lady wasn't interested in having any form of chat.

Please help... I don't want to upset them and totally understand that puppy's bark!

It's only the equivalent of a baby crying. I wouldn't do anything, it'll settle down over time.

Rinoachicken · 17/07/2021 09:35

They need to start nipping this in the bud now while the puppy is young. Much harder to break the habit once it’s older.

BridgetGetTheGin · 17/07/2021 09:39

I understand but we live in two very large houses, with huge gardens separating us and I can STILL hear the dog barking 😫. They let it into the garden at 6am and it's just not fair for the whole house to be woken. We need to windows open at the moment too because it's so hot!

Is it normal for a dog to bark 24/7?

I’m not a dog person at all but I would have though a puppy barking all the time was similar to a baby crying all the time. It should settle down over time.

BridgetGetTheGin · 17/07/2021 09:42

I love dogs/love puppies! Adore them! But this is really annoying, hopefully it's not long term

Are they putting it out and leaving it out to bark, or is it barking and they’re in the garden with it ?

LadyCatStark · 17/07/2021 09:44

It’s not normal for puppies to bark all day at all. Ours maybe let’s of one bark every couple of days 😂. That’s because he’s properly supervised and entertained or sleeping. I’d be mortified if our neighbours had to listen to him barking.

Dog barking is sooo annoying, we live near a chihuahua who gets let out at 11pm and 7am and yaps in the garden until it gets let back in, plus it yaps at intervals during the day but I can cope with that. Some people are just incredibly inconsiderate.

Putting it out and leaving it to bark. My son wandered over yesterday and they weren't happy as he put his hand through the fence and the dog barked even more. He's only 20 month so very curious. I just loudly said no, we don't do that and moved him inside.

It’s not normal for puppies to bark all the time and I doubt it will settle down within any input because it will become a habit
Is it going out for walks yet? That might settle it.
Otherwise I think you’ll have to let them know it’s disturbing you and suggest politely that they consult a trainer.
(I love dogs btw and have one but I have v little tolerance of barking!)

I think I might send my husband, I'm not sure the wife liked me too much! Blush

The puppy is barking because it is anxious. Leaving it outside alone is only going to make it worse. Poor pup.

DinosaurDiana · 17/07/2021 09:48

That’s not on. You’re going to have to have a word and give them the chance to sort it out before you contact the noise people at the council.
Start making a noise diary.
I have a dog but I don’t let her bark like that. I leave the door open so she can come in, and if she barks I’m straight out to stop it or bring her in.

Daisydoesnt · 17/07/2021 09:49

OP I’d be really hacked off about your neighbours letting the puppy into the garden at 6am and then just leaving it there unsupervised to bark. (If that is what is happening). That is really anti social. At that time of the day, and late in the evening, I’d be with the dog making sure it had a pee and then when it’s been bringing it back indoors. For the rest of the time, no it shouldn’t be barking 24/7….puppies sleep 16-18 hours a day so it’s probably completely hyped up and over tired. Sorry but they don’t sound like great owners. I would definitely be saying something, especially about late at night and early mornings.

And it’s Vizsla!

amission · 17/07/2021 09:50

I sympathise.

Our neighbour recently bred from her yappy dog and kept a puppy which is ten times yappier. They do nothing to check it and leave it out in the garden to tap, especially late at night which is weird. I don't want a bad relationship with them so am just hoping it does down.

But they're already annoyingly noisy ,they run a throbbing dehumidifier for hours a day which switches on and on off randomly.

I just have to grit my teeth and dream of a detached house!

Daisydoesnt · 17/07/2021 09:52

Hmm, just seen your update. I’m guessing they’re struggling with toilet training and are (mistakenly) working on the basis that if the dog is outside all the time it will magically learn that it’s meant to go outside. You really need to grasp the nettle on this - they are being very poor owners and neighbours and need to know this is not acceptable.

cloudysummerday · 17/07/2021 09:52

We have a vizsla and they have a really loud annoying bark when they're bored and want to play, or if they have been shut out and want to come in, or if they're not happy with something- you get the picture!!!

I would hazard a guess that they were not at all prepared for what a vizsla puppy is like and they're not giving it enough interaction or exercise...

As to what you can do about it.... wait for them to rehome it?

Nope.

Puppies bark for all sorts of reasons, but prolonged barking is generally a sign of anxiety. It won't be fixed by just ignoring it - the owners need to tackle it now before it develops into full-blown separation anxiety.

Viszlas are known as velcro dogs and do not do well on their own, unfortunately. If they're going to just chuck it out in the back garden and leave it, it won't be a happy dog.

cloudysummerday · 17/07/2021 10:01

And yes I echo the Velcro dog, these are very human dependent, very highly strung dogs and I doubt the barking will get better if they are treating it this way:-(. Poor dog:-(

Even when they bring it in, it's barking non-stop! She actually said yesterday, sorry if you hear my husband screaming he gets very upset when the dog bites! Blush

Get a white noise machine for your child, really helps them sleep in and drown out noise. Also super cheap on Amazon. I would have a chat with neighbours now in case they think it's not a problem

veeeeh · 17/07/2021 10:21

I have often wondered why such dog owners never seem to be bothered by all day barking from their pet(s). Does anyone know why this is?

I think I would have to say something, politely and see what happens.

Viviennemary · 17/07/2021 10:27

Dogs barking isn't the same as a baby crying. You just have to hope that they get sick of the barking themselves and re-home it. Id say something like goodness how do you put up with that barking all day. It must be awful. Its bad enough for us especially at 6 am.

Dontwatchfootball · 17/07/2021 10:34

Most dog owners don't let their dogs bark all day. We have always had dogs, as does everyone else in my family and in none of the houses are they allowed to keep barking. But while most people are reasonable and considerate, there are wankers who have dogs, just like there are wankers who allow their kids to run riot in restaurants, or who blast music late at night and any other antisocial behaviour you can thing of.

If the dog is barking that much it is not happy. Vizlas are very active dogs, so I wonder if they just had no idea how much work it would be. This is why so many lockdown puppies will end up in shelters or put down.
