Neighbours new puppy - barks ALL day

BridgetGetTheGin · 17/07/2021 09:33

Our neighbours recently got a new puppy. It barks all day and all night. It's a beautiful vizzler but it's becoming very tedious.

My son wakes up at 6am every morning due to the puppy being let out - previously he slept till 8am. He can't sleep either and keeps pretending to bark or saying 'doggy' till about 9pm when the dog goes to sleep.

I don't know what to do. The neighbours are new and I recently introduced myself, but the lady wasn't interested in having any form of chat.

Please help... I don't want to upset them and totally understand that puppy's bark!

I look after dogs (in my home) for a living, and it is not normal for a dog to bark all day. They will bark if they perceive a threat (door bell or people outside the window), or of they want out to pee. I have 4 dogs here just now and it is silent.

They are obviously letting the dog out to pee at 6am. I would be telling them that they need to walk the dog at 6am, not let it into the garden, as it's waking your household.

I don't let dogs out here until 730am, they don't tend to bark, but if one of them does, that one will be ushered back inside pronto, because we have neighbours!!

Do not let your toddler poke his fingers through the fence, even the friendliest of dogs might see that as encroachment on their territory and bite him.

There are visuals at the agility club and they have a very active mind as well as body, I know it's only a puppy so too young for full on activities, but it probably needs stimulation, poor thing. Plus like others have said they are velcro dogs, so need someone with them whilst in the garden, hell, all puppies need someone with them outside. I imagine this poor guy will be passed on to another owner before long.

Viszlas

My dog occasionally barks in the garden. Because of this we take her out on a lead if she needs to go early in the morning or late at night. This way we can bring her back inside before she starts so we don't disturb our neighbours.

Speak to them if it's constant. It's really not fair. They're also going to have issues toilet training it if it's just left outside. One of the most tedious jobs of having a puppy was taking it outside every half hour for the first week. Not to mention cruel.

nhy21 · 17/07/2021 12:37

My neighbour's lab barked all day and quite often through the night. I think it was a bit deaf and blind. It could easily bark for 3 hours non stop. Some nights it would bark from 1-3 am. I didn't say anything as my neighbour was elderly and not in good health so I felt sorry for him. I think he struggled to get the dog back in once he let it out. He also used to apologise about the barking on his Christmas card.

If I'm honest, I didn't realise how much it was impacting our enjoyment of the garden until the dog was rehomed. 8 years of barking and then blissful peace. In your situation, I'd definitely have a polite word as it's antisocial for neighbours to have to put up with constant barking. Even if it's hard to stop, I'd be apologising to my neighbours.

cloudysummerday · 17/07/2021 13:07

Oh dear, this could end up quite a difficult dog. I really doubt they will end up keeping it. Viszlas are hard work especially as young dogs and they do mouth/bite a lot and need a lot of work to train to have a soft mouth and not bite too hard. They can be quite reactive as they are highly strung and that's not a good combination.
Definitely don't let your kids poke their fingers through the fence as the dog gets older!!

EdinaMonsoon · 17/07/2021 13:11

They sound completely incompetent & clearly have zero knowledge of the breed (aside, presumably that they are very attractive dogs🤦‍♀️). It’s the reason why the majority of viszla breeders are responsible enough to thoroughly vet potential owners & often won’t allow them to go to people with no experience of dog care. Viszlas are velcro dogs who need human interaction to be happy. I describe mine as a 25kg lapdog. They hate being alone & I only had mine because I have wfh throughout her life. She only barks at the doorbell, or sounds a low growl if she feels something or someone is loitering by the house. She occasionally gives happy barks at play but we give the command “no shouting!” & she stops.

They are incredibly sensitive to human behaviour so if your neighbour’s husband is “shrieking” at it the poor thing will be feeling traumatised & anxious & insecure: which will further fuel the biting & barking. They need to mimic the mother & simply turn their back on a nipping puppy &/or give it calm timeout in its crate - with the door left open & within sight of humans. It’s saying “I don’t like that behaviour but I am not abandoning you”. They are hard work during the puppy stage but they desperately want to please their human & therefore respond well to training carried out in a calm manner. No dog deserves to be shouted at & the fact that she tells you this in a light hearted manner shows her ignorance. I honestly would have no hesitation in reporting it to someone like Vizsla Rescue who can advise you on the best course of action.

Their teeth are like sharp pins at that age so you definitely need to prevent your little one from putting his hands or fingers through the fence.

Here we go again... barking non-stop. Left in the garden, no owner to be seen. 😢😢😢

Puppies sleep for 16 hours a day so not sure how it's barking 24/7.

BridgetGetTheGin · 17/07/2021 16:24

I just barking and barking, almost whining - like a cry. It's sad to listen to actually. Not to mention beyond annoying.

It starts now and won't stop till 8pm tonight, sometimes 9pm.

I wish I had time to make a thread up or overly exaggerate! I can assure you with a toddler, a business and being heavily pregnant I don't have time to exaggerate and need a solution! I haven't posted on here in months and months!

@Viviennemary

Dogs barking isn't the same as a baby crying. You just have to hope that they get sick of the barking themselves and re-home it. Id say something like goodness how do you put up with that barking all day. It must be awful. Its bad enough for us especially at 6 am.
That's a good shout! Maybe in passing over the fence?

@wavecatcher

Get a white noise machine for your child, really helps them sleep in and drown out noise. Also super cheap on Amazon. I would have a chat with neighbours now in case they think it's not a problem
We have one! Sounds like a hover craft but isn't working now the dog has come along.

This really hacks me off! I adore dogs, and have one of my own .One bark and shes in! I think you might just say to her (or her DH) that your little boy is awake and you can hear the dog as well.Stress you like dogs but the barking is disturbing you.Hopefully they will take the hint!

ThinWomansBrain · 17/07/2021 16:59

two vizlas at a holiday cottage that I stay at often (the owner's dogs, so next door). They bark when someone comes through the gate, and that's about it. And when my cat decides to sit in the middle of their garden, rather than the one attached to the holiday cottage

Flowerlane · 17/07/2021 17:01

A ‘relative’ has 2 of the same breed they need a lot of training and exercise!!!

Relatives have not trained their 2 at all. They started of with one and after the first month of having it home the neighbours were complaining about the barking…9 months later they now have 2! Again another pup not being trained. Feel so sorry for the neighbours.

MoiraRose4 · 17/07/2021 17:06

They aren’t a ‘barky’ breed, so this is pure neglect and laziness from the owners. So sad. They need a lot of stimulation and they are really hard as puppies. I feel for you having to listen to it all the time, but that’s a dog that’s being neglected.

elevenses75 · 17/07/2021 17:14

@Popcornriver we do the same as I have open gates so he can see everything it drives me mental as he’s loud so lead on and in her comes.

What’s the point in them having a puppy for it to get chucked outside to bark all day, you’d think it drove them nuts too. It would me. Def say something it’s v antisocial

FrankButchersDickieBow · 17/07/2021 17:18

I feel your pain OP. I really do. We live in a row of terraced houses and neighbour couple of doors down got a lockdown puppy and can't handle it's barking, so she puts it out in the day and only let's it in when she takes it for a walk or she goes out.

It's a piercing high pitched bark too.

We can't have any windows open when it's barking as it resonates through the whole house.

Luckily we are moving soon thank fuck.

I am a dog lover too and we have a dog.

Soubriquet · 17/07/2021 17:20

They sound really irresponsible dog owners not being able to stop a puppy from barking all hours of the day.

I have two dogs, and they never barked all day as pups

Barkingmemad · 17/07/2021 17:23

I'm currently in my garden listening to next door's dog yowling away constantly. I think they have gone out and left it.

Should I tell them is does this? Would dog owners want to know?

Flaunch · 17/07/2021 17:30

You need to speak to them and if that doesn’t work you need to report them to the council.

My 6 month old pup doesn’t bark all day because he has been trained not to and he’s been taught the command “quiet”.

Whoscoatsthatjacket · 17/07/2021 18:34

My twatty neighbour used to leave her dogs bark constantly, we called the council and it soon improved.
We’ve recently got our first pup and she barely barks. She’ll bark when she hears the postman, when the vacuum goes and then any other random occasion she gets a bit spooked, it’s nipped in the bud very quickly when she starts though.

Unsure33 · 17/07/2021 22:00

Poor poor dog .its barking because its stressed.

MaMelon · 17/07/2021 22:07

Oh god - that sounds really grim Sad

Our neighbours on both sides have had dogs. One got theirs as a puppy and it definitely didn’t bark all day - it barked a bit but not so much that it became noticeable and annoying, and certainly not that early in the morning. The other neighbour got theirs as a rescue dog and it definitely did bark a lot to start with, but they got the trainers in very quickly and I don’t know what magic they worked but the barking settled almost immediately.
A dog that barks all the time must be very distressed to do that or has got itself into a habit. It can be sorted though - I’d try speaking to them and then report it if it continues.
