Where has all the cannelloni gone?

Been to 4 supermarkets today, Sainsbury, Tesco, Asda and Aldi, not one had any cannelloni shells in. I could swear it used to be easily available everywhere. Are they blocking Italian products at Dover or something?

You could make a thick hereby bechamel using whatever replacement milk you like @Dollpiglet and have that either with spinach or meat then pour a tomatoey sauce over.

DD has egg/milk allergies and I've made it for her like this using oat milk for the bechamel.

@Horseyhorsey3
Orzo was available to order from Asda this week, I got some for work

DameFanny · 15/07/2021 21:03

Re orzo, you can make your own by making up your pasta dish, sticking out in the freezer for 20 minutes, then grating it on the biggest holes (gluten free adaptation)

But yeah, project fear was it?

DameFanny · 15/07/2021 21:05

Oh, and if you roll your own tubes, overlap on the bottom to avoid unfurling

MyGirlDaisy · 15/07/2021 21:05

Not just me that couldn’t find any then! I tried Tesco, Sainsburys and Aldi to no avail but found some in Morrisons- good luck!

YellowBellyCat · 15/07/2021 21:05

I’ve struggled with dog poo bags and had to resort to Amazon.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/07/2021 21:06

Haven’t seen lasagna sheets for a while.

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/07/2021 21:06

Probably. There are shortages of so many imports at the moment as a result of complications with Brexit regulations. We had a builder in to quote for various jobs today and he pre-warned us that building wood is in short-supply, the components for upvc windows are currently on an 8/9 weeks delay as are soffits , guttering etc. and you’re in for a long wait if you need plastering done.

Aldi doesn’t have our usual cheese or yoghurts in because of a supply issue and - horror of horrors for our 18 year old, McDonalds in our area were unable to obtain chicken selects for over 3 weeks 😱Grin

As a plus, we haven’t been able to get a regular supply of our usual cat food for months now so the cats have had to become less fussy.

@Taliskerskye

Cannelloni hasn’t been available for years! It’s weird. We ate it all the time in the 80/90s
Weirdly, I keep seeing cannelloni in Sainsbury's but not lasagne. I'd have thought the latter was much more popular.
Procrastatron · 15/07/2021 21:09

Not the point I know but I’ve never cooked cannelloni. How do you get the filling into the tubes? Do you pipe it?

Taliskerskye · 15/07/2021 21:10

@SwedishEdith
That is weird!!!
I find it hard with lasagne but I ended up going to a specialist Italian deli to get cannelloni
Maybe it’s based on area

stealthninjamum · 15/07/2021 21:10

I’ve never heard of orzo

It’s funny I’ve noticed Sainsbury’s pasta shelves have looked a bit low recently. I ordered 2 x 1kg bags of penne for today and they delivered 4 x 500g of another type. Next time I go I’ll drop a couple of bags in the food bank bin in Sainsbury’s in case this is going to be a problem.

Sanguinesuzy · 15/07/2021 21:33

Quality and variety of fresh veg has declined up here (NW). A lot of the veg is yellowing or soft/bendy. Not long left on best before date. Inexplicable lack of broccoli, carrots one day. No aubergines or raspberries either. Photos of veg shoved in empty spaces. No sparkling water.

Awaywiththeclouds · 15/07/2021 21:35

Red itchy bites- but only on one leg. 3 appeared the first morning and 3 more today. Are they bed bugs?

Awaywiththeclouds · 15/07/2021 21:36

Sorry meant to start a new post

RickOShay · 15/07/2021 21:38

We had cannelloni for tea tonight 😀
Morrisons is the only supermarket near me which stocks it.

Hellcatspangle · 15/07/2021 22:01

Amazon...I've been trying to get parpadelle too, no luck in the shops.

JudgeJ · 15/07/2021 22:45

@DobbyTheHouseElk

Haven’t seen lasagna sheets for a while.
Loads in Morrisons. Hard to find Pink Grapefruit juice though!
Its90minutestonight · 15/07/2021 22:49

Sainsburys haven't had gnocchi since the start of the pandemic. Have had to resort to Amazon. Grrr.

ShitPoetryClub · 15/07/2021 22:50

I put the filling in a freezer bag, snip the corner and use it like a piping bag. We use, chicken, mushroom and bacon, beef ragu, roasted veg ragusa or spinach and ricotta.

I live in the brassica and broccoli county and there are few workers to pick the veg with much left in the field to seed or the lack of HGV drivers to get it to the supermarket. Must not forget the cold spring weather that didn’t help either. Noticed many a gap, grapes been an issue for me in recent weeks.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/07/2021 23:03

they are having to cut down on the range of stuff they have in.

shortage of drivers as training is delayed.
shortage of drivers due to brexit and they have gone home
shortage of drivers because isolating due to covid.

wholewheat penne was out of stock at asda and the shelf looked quite bare generally.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/07/2021 23:04

and you are being unreasonable op because now I want cannelloni

ShitPoetryClub · 15/07/2021 23:05

I can see us all growing soft fruits and salads instead of flowers next year.

Morrison’s had loads of orzo last week.

I haven’t seen any tricolour fusilli for a while.
