To be so elated it's ridiculous

Money is quite tight this month as we've had a few unexpected bills crop up so we used all our savings to sort it out. The day after the last bill was paid our washing machine packed up.

Bloody typical! We were going to put it on the credit card as we can afford that but we've got no savings because the boiler just took them all.

It was in my basket and I decided to have a look on you tube and ive cleared out both filters on the washing machine and re plumbed it in and it works!! I've saved us £400 and now we can save a bit more and get a new one when we can afford it as I've hopefully bought us a couple more months.

It is nearly 10 years old but if it can do us a bit longer than grand :)

I love reading things like this! I'm glad you gave it a go!

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 15/07/2021 19:01

Thata awesome!!! And I wouldn't call it ridiculous, when you've got amn unexpected group of bills like that, it stresses you out, but actually sorting one of the problem eliminates a bit of stress and the elation is a real high!

You celebrate your win!!!!

cariadlet · 15/07/2021 19:02

That's amazing. Well done you

Notimeforaname · 15/07/2021 19:03

From now on, every time a device or machine packs up in my place and I'm thinking of replacing. ...I will hear the name poorfanjo softly in my earGrin and soldier on 😂

LaLaMelyn · 15/07/2021 19:04

I thought it was common knowledge to check and clean the filters if the machine won't drain Confused

But maybe my kids are just particularly bad for leaving hair slides/Lego/coins/small plastic dogs in their pockets Blush

MatildaTheCat · 15/07/2021 19:04

Oh god I love mending things. Best satisfaction ever. Well done you.

willowmelangell · 15/07/2021 19:13

Sending you a virtual 'high five'Grin

Nelia5 · 15/07/2021 19:14

You are supposed to clean the filters regularly. That’s why there’s a cap and even a small drain hose on most machines

Snowbeau · 15/07/2021 19:15

Our shower stopped working yesterday and we guessed it was going to be about £80 for a call out fee and fix. I then remembered that it was on a separate trip switch and it had just tripped. I'd have felt so daft if we'd have called out an electrician just for a tripped switch!

PearlJamButties · 15/07/2021 19:19

No I get it!

I was battling depression, and was doing CBT.

The toilet handle snapped and I was thinking just my bastard luck, I'm going to have call a plumber etc....when I decided to stop and do something about it.

I looked on line found the name of the part that had snapped, went to the local plumbers merchant and bought it for 99p!

It took 2 minutes to replace and I was absolutely delighted with myself.

As daft as it sounds, that was the start of my recovery, and helped me change my head space.

I often think back fondly to the elation I felt.... I ^can^ do it.

jackstini · 15/07/2021 19:24

Marvellous!!
I replaced the keyboard on my laptop the other day - would NEVER have attempted it if I had realised how many separate parts I would have to remove first!

But - I did it and was ridiculously pleased 🤣

To be so elated it's ridiculous
mariomushroom · 15/07/2021 19:28

Oh that’s so brilliant. Well done you!

Not as much money saved as your example but we had an issue with the downstairs loo gurgling water and constantly flushing - we were quoted various prices from local plumbers, the cheapest being £70 just to come out. Then a colleague mentioned she’d had a similar problem, and her DH had fitted a part himself by watching a YouTube video. The part was £15 and we did the same - problem solved!

CloudPop · 15/07/2021 19:29

🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

poorfanjo · 15/07/2021 19:31

@LaLaMelyn yes it is, however the filter at the bottom which is easy to get to was fine so I thought it was utterly fucked, turns out if you get the screw driver out there's a hatch on the back with another filter in it and another one inside the outlet pipe, which absolutely couldn't be accessed without a screw driver and turning the after off at the stop cock. It also hang wanted to turn off the lock to the door since Monday so I had to fix that too as the latch had caught so it was not an easy fix!

Bravo! 👏🏻 That's great. I'm well impressed by your plumbing prowess.
However ... It will totally fail one day so I'd suggest starting a small regular saving into a machine replacement fund now so the financial blow is cushioned.

CiaoForNiao · 15/07/2021 19:52

Well done OP. Now if you could just work out how to fix my dishwasher you'll be my hero!

Nightlystroll · 15/07/2021 19:53

My washing machine is over 20 years and still going so you might have good while to save up!

Ponoka7 · 15/07/2021 19:57

My daughter fixed our toilet by following YouTube videos. It's just having the confidence or being skint enough (as in our case), to give it a go.

poorfanjo · 15/07/2021 19:59

@3rdwave fully intend to save £200 a month into a 'rainy day' fund and the rest of our savings into another for 'oh shit' funds. I hate feeling like this!
