Money is quite tight this month as we've had a few unexpected bills crop up so we used all our savings to sort it out. The day after the last bill was paid our washing machine packed up.

Bloody typical! We were going to put it on the credit card as we can afford that but we've got no savings because the boiler just took them all.

It was in my basket and I decided to have a look on you tube and ive cleared out both filters on the washing machine and re plumbed it in and it works!! I've saved us £400 and now we can save a bit more and get a new one when we can afford it as I've hopefully bought us a couple more months.

It is nearly 10 years old but if it can do us a bit longer than grand :)

We saved hundreds by not taking my car to the garage to find the source of the bloody leak that was filling my passenger footwell up every time it rained! We now check YouTube for anything that's broken.

Well done. It's always a joy not having to pay out big sums of money with a simple fix.

I was quoted £120 to repair the electric window on my car. Instead I took off the inside door panel and saw that some tar had melted and dripped down gluing the mechanism. I cleaned it all with white spirit and it worked perfectly.

I never knew this. I just opened the filter on mine and loads of black smelly crap came out.

That’s awesome! We’ve had one of those months too—my car broke down in a really spectacular way TWICE! Both times the bill made me cringe. Yesterday my washing machine also gave up but unfortunately it’s beyond repair so I’ve just shelled out for a new one this morning. I’m really glad yours was fixable because it’s one of those things that really hurts to spend money on—£400+ for and essential but supremely tedious household chore. Ugh. I suggested to my husband that I just take our clothes to the river and scrub them out in there instead but he wasn’t having it Smile

I was fixing the flush mechanism on my toilet, i had just managed it and as I was replacing the heavy ceramic lid of the tank, it slipped from my arthritic hands and snapped the ballcock off, I had to wedge it closed with a shampoo bottle, until I could get a plumber. Hmm

Well done OP! Excellent work!

Well done! The feeling of satisfaction must be mighty.

I love an online youtube tutorial for DIY things. It's usually some patient heavyset Mid Western man called something like Chuck or Doug. I love the Chucks and the Dougs.

You are amazing! I am too! I 'repaired' both our dishwasher and washing machine.
I saved hundreds of pounds for our family.
Pretty sure that it equates to a weekend away/nice ring/fabulous Le Creuset pan/new towels or a lovely pair of boots.

My handheld Dyson stopped charging and a cheery feller on YouTube showed me how to buy a new battery, and change it. He also explained that it was perfectly fine to get a cheaper, non-Dyson one, and also I could get a more powerful one. So I changed it for very little money and now it's got enough power to do the whole house.

I thought our tumble dryer was fucked and was reluctant to spend nearly 200 on a call out when we could get a new one for that but looked online and we managed to fix it ourselves. I was over the moon!
