Video: Italy England Penalty Shootout - Both fans side by side

I was a neutral last night. Just watched this which has had a lot of views, shows Italy and England fans during the penalty shootout. Lots of comments below it mentioning the contrast between the fans, how the Italians simply celebrated as a group, whereas some of the England fans got into their faces when Italy missed. Also the Italian fans ignored a woman (in the England fan group) when she threw a drink over them.

So AIBU to think the Italian fans just seemed classier?

Some English fans were more thuggish for sure and deserve to be condemned. The Italian team were more thuggish though in the way they took it in turns to try and injure English players. Very calculated and nasty.

Fastforwardtospring · 12/07/2021 22:10

Shame about the football team with their dirty tricks, our team may have lost, but they did with dignity and were definitely the ‘classier’ team.

Shapesorted · 12/07/2021 22:10

I wonder if you think their players or ours were classier with the way they conducted themselves on the pitch? Or is this just an opportunity to slag off the English?

farfallarocks · 12/07/2021 22:25

Today is utterly depressing, the state of this. Country gets me down

VeniVidiWeeWee · 12/07/2021 22:27

Interesting.

The first 3 responses are all "whataboutery".

SpringRainbow · 12/07/2021 22:29

There is good and bad on both sides.

There is no one size fits all.

Well I agree about the England team, who overall have carried themselves very well throughout.

Oh yawn. Yes we get it, England fans are the worst.

Sorry but I'm getting so pissed off with this. Me and my very large family are massive football fans and the fact that every other country think we all behave like that is so depressing!

I'm disgusted by what I've seen from a minority of fans during the euros but I'm not stupid enough to think all football fans are thugs.

Watchingyou2sleezes · 12/07/2021 22:54

If you'd ever been to one of the more heated Serie A matches you'd know that Italian football fans can be just as unedifying as ' our' own.

Ah but you're not allowed to slag off other countries fans. Only the English apparently
Geamhradh · 12/07/2021 23:08

My Italian husband has been saying wtf about the things Italians are saying about the English today. From the booing of the anthem (which Italian fans did at every one of their own matches too) to the taking off of the medals (which Italians always do) the stamping on the Italian flag (in our Italian town they pushed a coffin with England written on it and burned it) etc etc. He said that had the match been in Rome, there would have been stabbings.

Someone was shot dead in a nearby town and his 12 year old granddaughter is in a coma in hospital.

There are classy people on both sides, and thugs on both sides. My FB is full of abuse towards the English today from Italian contacts, not one of my British contacts has said a single word against any Italians.

Thank you for this ❤️

I don't know a single person who would act the way we've been portrayed. My 14 year old is scared to go back and watch our team next month as she thinks all fans of English teams have turned into racist monsters since last March.

FastFood · 12/07/2021 23:41

That girl who threw the beer was ridiculous.
But it's one person.
Most of the people I know in this country happen to be English and all of them are fantastic people.
I took the tube + train + bus to go back home yesterday night, people were a bit drunk, but civil and somehow joyful. I have a positive biais towards English people, but even I was surprised at how civilised everybody were at 11:30pm.
I'm neither English nor British but I'm proud to be living in this country and to call it home and I'll be celebrating when I'll get citizenship.

Funny how both my countries have a tendency for being self-deprecating. I personally believe both countries are amazing (call me Pollyanna)

Italy is one of my favourite places in the world. But, like every country, it has a minority of thugs.

Interesting that the comments so far don't seem to correlate so much with the poll results.. I'll assume the poll is more accurate Wink

What of? Ignorance? Prejudice based on stereotyping?
znaika · 13/07/2021 01:40

All these anti English and the threads about with tasteless comments about the royals also thegoading comments about MM appear in what is the early hrs of the morning UK time. It almost seems as though they are started in another time zone. Hmmm.

anyway im sure a certain poster will be along in a minute with her anti - english spite...

I started this thread just after 10pm, not sure how that's "earlier hours of UK time" Confused

But you still claimed this was "started in a different time zone" (which I assume means by someone in a timezone different to UK time) which is incorrect..

Interesting that you completely ignored a girl and her grandfather being shot during Italian celebrations too. Or is that because it's a minority? If so, that would make you a hypocrite.

I imagine those who are agreeing with you but not posting are of the "yes English fans are all thugs but you can't argue with that sort on MN" ilk

Ahh. So you refuse to accept any negative comments about anyone that isn't English. You are showing your prejudice there. The minority of England fans have rightly been condemned, but the refusal to accept that any other nationality can ever be wrong smacks of xenophobia. There was a woman on another thread yesterday who was English and had lived happily in Italy for 27 years. She was hiding in her flat because of the abuse she was getting for being English. Of course that's fine because only the English can be in the wrong (if you are a xenophobe)
Geamhradh · 13/07/2021 08:51

@CarrieCat
I'm that poster, and I'm still in hiding. Bit better today (I've stopped crying at least) and my FB and WA contacts have been culled.
I'll channel Marcus Rashford and rise above it. As my half British and half Italian daughter said yesterday "why can't they just be happy and celebrate FOR Italy, why does it have to turn into abuse AGAINST the loser?"

Geamhradh · 13/07/2021 08:53

The weird thing (and possibly naive of me) was that I'd been vaguely concerned what the reaction would be if England won. When they lost I was sort of sad, but also happy for my adoptive home, and "well, at least they won't get at me now"
Famous last words. Confused

CarrieCat · 13/07/2021 08:56

Hope you are OK Geamhradh. I feel for you.
