To think a saved penalty shouldn't be called a miss?

I know the result is the same but I feel bad for Saka with everyone saying he missed a penalty when it was saved by the keeper. If I remember correctly the same thing happened with Southgate in '96, he got pilloried for miss but it was a save by the keeper.

This is a missed penalty.

The only one I thought was missed was the guy (can't remember his name) faffed around a lot before taking it.

I remember thinking this isn't going to end well and then he hit the post. That was a miss.

MidnightMonsterMunch · 12/07/2021 13:02

If you don’t score, you miss. Whether it hits the keeper, the post, the crossbar or the back of Row Z.

Shelovesamystery · 12/07/2021 13:02

I think that penalties are mostly down to luck, and being able to keep their cool under the pressure.

The only one of ours from last night that I would consider a "miss" was Rashfords. And boy, does my heart go out to him for it. He'll be beating himself up about it for years. I just want to give him a hug and say "it's okay, we're proud of you all" 😢

Aprilx · 12/07/2021 13:04

It is a bonus if the keeper saves, but the keeper is definitely not expected to make the save, the onus is all on the kicker. Therefore if they don’t score they missed.

You’re right but that faffing around sent the keeper the wrong way as he intended. The following shot was, unfortunately, terrible!
MeanMrMustardSeed · 12/07/2021 13:08

I totally agree with you OP and have been thinking about this for the last week or so with all the Southgate penalty resurfacing. And after last night, I am absolutely convinced that you and me are correct! SmileSmileSmile

skippy67 · 12/07/2021 13:09

I agree. Rashford's was a miss, the other two were saved.

TastyMeatPuppet · 12/07/2021 13:10

It's so much pressure. They all did smashing.

We say miss for anything that's not a goal. Not meant badly, I couldn't boot a ball in a straight line, but it's a goal or a miss here.

TheGenealogist · 12/07/2021 13:11

Agree. Penalties which are on target and are saved by the keeper are not misses.

Tippexy · 12/07/2021 13:15

Exactly. Rashford’s was a missed penalty (missed the target). Saka’s was saved.

DdraigGoch · 12/07/2021 13:15

I thought that when looking at the BBC's live updates. It was all either "goal" or "miss". It should be "goal", "miss", or "save".

KateTheEighth · 12/07/2021 13:22

I agree completely

Scored, saved or missed

Yes i agree.

A miss means the ball missed the net completely. It's not the same as anything else.

Youdiditanyway · 12/07/2021 14:19

Agree. Rashford missed his, the other two were saved.

gillysSong · 12/07/2021 14:38

Depends what side you're on.
If you are the goalie it's a save, other team taking the shot, it's a miss.

edwinbear · 12/07/2021 14:44

Completely agree OP. There is a world of difference between penalties which are saved due to the skill of the keeper and missing the goal completely.

Chanjer · 12/07/2021 15:13

Placing the ball in a part of the net where it can be easily saved is a failure therefore a miss

Facing a goalie who's about 20 feet tall if you don't put the ball into the side netting then you're making it too easy

ChainJane · 12/07/2021 15:15

It's a miss. The aim is to get the ball across the goal line (between the posts obviously). Whether you pull a Rashford or Saka it is irrelevant - they both missed the objective.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/07/2021 15:41

objectively it's yes or no, in or out, score or miss.

you can call it a tender loving catch if you want but it was a miss.🤷‍♀️

really feel for all of them and yes, would love to hug all 3. nobody wanted it more than them.
still, incredibly proud of how far they've progressed.

they gave their best & gave us so much hope, joy & excitement.
looking forward to World Cup even more now

InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 12/07/2021 15:49

I don't think trying to distinguish between missing the goal entirely and the keeper saving the penalty is that useful. It's entirely possible to take a crap penalty that would go into the goal, but is an easy save for the goalkeeper.

seasonalremarks · 12/07/2021 15:53

I think Rashford took the risk and hit the post because he was trying his hardest to stop the goalie being able to save it. It failed but he took a great shot.

The penalties are not why we lost though. We didn't attack enough. If you look at how the Italian Captain played and how ours did says it all.

UrgentExit · 12/07/2021 15:54

For me a miss hits the crossbar, the post or otherwise fails to be on target. If the goalkeeper prevents the goal it's a save. Give a keeper their due. Either way the player has 'failed to convert' his penalty.

EeeByeGummieBear · 12/07/2021 15:59

As the mum of a keeper who works hard in training to prepare for penalties, it's definitely a save.
As PP have said, a miss is if the taker doesn't get the shot on target.
If the keeper manages to save it, then they need to be given the credit.
But keepers get a rum deal in life, especially from commentators who used to play outfield.
Watch a game of football with a keeper and they will soon put you straight about what gets labelled a 'mistake' by someone who has never played in goal Grin

FlaminEckVera · 12/07/2021 16:01

It is a miss, kind of...

FlaminEckVera · 12/07/2021 16:02

@Turdibacious

I don't think the winner of the FINAL of a major football tournament should be decided on a bastard penalty shootout. Period.

If it's a draw after full time, and extra time, they should have a rematch.

JMHO.
