I HATE FOOTBALL so why am I hiding behind a cushion?

Confused

On tenterhooks.

Why do I give a shit about a bunch of massively overpaid blokes kicking a ball around Confused.

Obviously knew this was a strong possibility but still gutted. I like Rashford and I know he is going to get dragged through the mud for this... and poor Saka crying, he is only 19 Sad

My kids went to bed sobbing. From the last kick I've been telling them "it's the taking part that counts, didn't they do well for such a young team, We can still win the World Cup" now they're asleep and I just feel so deflated and tired!
However no one feels as bad as they do.
They should be proud of stepping up to take a penalty in the first place.
Well done lads.

Frownette · 11/07/2021 23:27

OP you can come out from the cushion now :)

Eskarina1 · 11/07/2021 23:40

We came 2nd in the Euros and a large part of the country had a positive shared experience. I hope we get to look back at this as a positive.

JustCallMeBubblesDahling · 11/07/2021 23:41

Italy didn’t deserve to win at all, just for what that player did to Saku.

Stupid game. Certainly will not be watching the World Cup!

Possibly a big mistake to have such young players taking penalties. Especially having Saka last. Too young. Too much pressure.

YEP! World cup next year. Onwards and upwards! England did so well. They should be proud! Smile

Italy did NOT deserve to win!

DrSbaitso · 11/07/2021 23:58

Italy did play better overall but they were also dirty.

Frownette · 11/07/2021 23:59

Italy had control of the ball and were on the attack more. But the ref was biased and ignored the blatent violence going on. I'm not surprised England shrunk back a bit. You want to think a match is fair. Not that you'd get grabbed and pulled over.

Absolutely, and bringing two fringe players on in the dying seconds just to take penalties? Massive pressure (and Rashford has been off form and having a tough time for a while).

Southgate absolutely blew it and I'm angry at what he did to those players.

First time watching football?

changeyourname11111 · 12/07/2021 00:08

Feel so sorry for Rashford and co and feel that the abuse they are now suffering on social media is Southgate’s fault.

Re the refereeing however, England probably shouldn’t have got the penalty against Denmark, so decisions like that have also worked in their favour.

I don't think there were any really controversial decisions in the game tbh.

Frownette · 12/07/2021 00:20

Ratalie I really got into it in 96 but then...that was quite a few years ago! Perhaps they shoved and kicked and pulled back then but I don't remember that. Mind you I was quite the youngster schoolchild at the time. It's supposed to be a no contact sport.

Just really hoping no violence tonight and people go to bed as it's Sunday.

I was surprised that yanking a player down by the neck of his shirt wasn't a red card.

Sillyduckseverywhere · 12/07/2021 07:11

I'm more concerned about the footage of guys in Italy shirts having 7 shades kicked out of them.
Stay classy football. 🤮

DrSbaitso · 12/07/2021 07:18

And the racist abuse of the players who missed the penalties.

It's so devastating. It is a game, one that involves a lot of skill and dedication, and it really can be so wonderful. It's not even a contact sport. I don't know why football attracts this sort of thing when rugby or tennis or cricket don't.
