I’ve only just realised my son has an extra tooth 🦷

My son is 14, just taken him to the orthodontist for possibly having a brace fitted. I’ve just been informed he has an extra incisor. We should have four on the top and four on the bottom. He has four on the top and five on the bottom. Considering these are his front teeth I feel a bit bad that I had never noticed. Would this bother you? I mean not that your child has an extra tooth, but because you didn’t realise. Not sure if I’m over reacting

If it makes you feel any better, my son was nearly 5 before we discovered he was virtually blind in one eye…

Neuts346 · 07/07/2021 13:12

Don’t be too bothered, once they get past the stage of being little kids we don’t really have a reason to check their teeth do we?
Teens aren’t really renowned for their wide smiles allowing teeth inspections are they?

Angel2702 · 07/07/2021 13:14

Two of my kids have extra teeth, make sure they x ray as well to check. My daughter had one removed but there is another growing upwards hidden in her upper palette that is going to need to be removed carefully. Wouldn’t have known it was there.

RedMarauder · 07/07/2021 13:15

Cool.

More teeth to bite with.

MatildaTheCat · 07/07/2021 13:15

I was into my fifth decade before I realised I am missing a tooth on one side. I don’t think a dentist can have ever mentioned it although frankly there is quite visible evidence.🤣

He did seem to think this was a reason to eat more 😁

I wouldn’t have noticed that either. Seems like something a dentist would have mentioned before now if they thought it was a problem?

Oblomov21 · 07/07/2021 13:33

Strange dentist didn't mention it though. Presumably you've taken him annually?

Yes, he’s never missed an appointment, but the dentist had never mentioned anything.

This happened to my DD aged 9 at the dentist. She has two little molars, first ones at the front top row, instead of one. I was so embarrassed as I had never noticed. She may need one removed at some point. Dentist said it was very unusual.

MagnificentBottom · 07/07/2021 13:38

I’m sure the dentist would have mentioned it if there were any implications which I’m assured from the orthodontist that there aren’t.

Main thing is his teeth are ok and he’s healthy, I just thought as his mum I should have noticed at some point, but there again when he smiles you can only see his top teeth so maybe I shouldn’t feel bad.

Incisors are two top, two bottom, aren’t they?

If he has nine rather than four, that’s very unusual.

Unless you mean pre-molars?

CupOfTPlease · 07/07/2021 13:40

Supernumerary (ST) is more common than you think. Nothing to worry about it.

Humans have 8 incisors, 4 on top and 4 on the bottom

Don't feel bad OP.

Slight hijack but following another thread I googled toddler skulls...woah, it's obvious but blew my mind!

RedMarauder · 07/07/2021 13:48

OP if I had an extra tooth I would be showing everyone.

Though if he gets braces he may have other teeth extracted, so while he has an extra incisor he won't have an extra tooth....

deragod · 07/07/2021 13:51

I had an extra wisdom teeth up, on right side. Dental surgeon took it off, I wasn't even swollen after. He prescribed some antibiotics just in case, suggested camomile tea to rinse my mouth with. The end.

However, he said its likely that I will grow more extras. I was 19 and so far, ten years later no more surprises.

Hallyup6 · 07/07/2021 14:06

My daughter is missing one of her lower lateral incisors. She was 3 before I realised it had never developed. I just thought she had gappy teeth.

WhateverHappenedToFayWray · 07/07/2021 14:11

Oh I wouldn't worry about it. I also had an extra tooth and I didn't realised until I was about 12. It didn't cause any issues at all.

I also have a double Kidney on my left side that I only found out about 5 or so years ago.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 07/07/2021 14:11

My teen had 2 extra teeth grow down during lockdown and he didntnotice himself. They had always been up in his gums not through atall but now they are being removed as they have appeared in the roof of his mouth.

cleckheatonwanderer · 07/07/2021 14:14

Surely this is something that a dentist should have pointed out? I got to the age of 35 until I was told I have cusps of carabelli on my top molars. Can't say it's ever affected me in day-to-day life.

Purpletomato · 07/07/2021 14:18

I had several extra teeth. Xray to check which should be removed and then the surplus were extracted, wasn't a problem really. Have they checked his xrays to make sure there aren't any others hiding in the gums?

Marmite27 · 07/07/2021 14:18

I’m thinking canines Confused

Sorry!

NotMyCat · 07/07/2021 14:19

@TheSockMonster my dad only realised I couldn't see well when I pointed out a red bus and it was a postbox HmmBlush

Fabuleuse · 07/07/2021 14:21

I wouldn't feel remotely bad about that! My brother was 16 when it was discovered he was quite badly colour blind and no-one had noticed!
