I’ve only just realised my son has an extra tooth 🦷

My son is 14, just taken him to the orthodontist for possibly having a brace fitted. I’ve just been informed he has an extra incisor. We should have four on the top and four on the bottom. He has four on the top and five on the bottom. Considering these are his front teeth I feel a bit bad that I had never noticed. Would this bother you? I mean not that your child has an extra tooth, but because you didn’t realise. Not sure if I’m over reacting

My 4yo ds has an extra incisor on one side, the dentist thought it was quite cool as "they're really rare!" 😂

Oh I wouldn't worry about it. I also had an extra tooth and I didn't realised until I was about 12. It didn't cause any issues at all.

I also have a double Kidney on my left side that I only found out about 5 or so years ago.

Is your double kidney functional?
EKGEMS · 07/07/2021 15:59

I had both canine teeth pulled then had braces applied at age 15 and no one else noticed they were missing once the gap closed bar one family member so don't feel bad!

fuckingsickofcovid · 07/07/2021 18:00

My little brother had a whole extra set of adult teeth that had to be removed. I am 28(nearly 28) and still have 2 baby teeth. Teeth are odd.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 07/07/2021 18:10

DD had to have her baby teeth removed by the dentist as they never fell out so she double rowed like a shark😱

Oblomov21 · 07/07/2021 18:24

I still reckon a dentist should mention it. If your child has a tooth missing, or an extra tooth, I expect this to be bought to the parents attention.

WhateverHappenedToFayWray · 07/07/2021 19:01

@RedMarauder Yes, it's fully functional although it can cause me discomfort at times and I do suffer with UTI's (that's actually how I found out about it)

Eleoura · 07/07/2021 20:45

Are the going to remove the extra tooth to allow room for the movement from the braces?

At 12, also for braces, I found out I have absolutely no wisdom teeth. Not even one!

Wrotten · 07/07/2021 22:01

I'm 32. I had braces as a teen.

Recently I went to a new dentist to discuss Invisalign. He pointed out that I'm missing an incisor and actually have a canine in its place. They're completely different shaped teeth at the back. I'd never noticed and it's my mouth!

Wrotten · 07/07/2021 22:03

Correction.

I'm missing a canine and I've got a premolar in its place.

I think. I'm all confused now!
@TheSockMonster my dad only realised I couldn't see well when I pointed out a red bus and it was a postbox HmmBlush
Oh dear! In our defence he had perfect vision in his working eye and no squint. He used to point out birds in trees that the rest of us would struggle to see.

That’s not to say there were no signs. I tried to dress him as a pirate once and he had a complete meltdown when I tried to put the patch over his eye. His only working eye Blush

TheSockMonster · 07/07/2021 22:59

*defense

Did your vision improve with glasses/treatment @NotMyCat and, if so, can you remember the first moment you could see properly?

DS could only see light and dark in his bad eye before we started treatment (patching) but now has quite a bit of useable vision in that eye if he wears glasses.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 07/07/2021 23:05

No, it wouldn't bother me. I make my kids
Brush their teeth but have never bothered counting them!

MyCreateIsUsernamed · 07/07/2021 23:07

I only found out a couple of months ago that I've got an extra wisdom tooth. I am 43. It's probably been there for about 25 years and I never noticed. And it's my own actual mouth!

So not noticing someone else's teeth is fine in comparison.

GoodHairDay86 · 08/07/2021 14:59

Im 34 and was only told a year ago that I have 4 baby teeth in my mouth ! No adult teeth in the gums either and they are at the front so when they fall out which he said they eventually will ill be devastated!
