To be sick to death of next door’s delivery drivers looking through my window?

I live in a flat in a converted house and, due to the slightly odd shape of the building my upstairs neighbours front door is next to my back door. Other side of my back door is my sitting room window. Their front door does have a number, a letter box and a buzzer, which my back door doesn’t.

It keeps happening that when something is being delivered for them, if the driver doesn’t know which door to use even though it’s fucking obvious or the neighbours don’t answer the buzzer, they’ll just look through my window and yell to me or DH if we’re in there to ask if it’s for us. This was particularly fun when I was breastfeeding my then newborn DS in the run up to Christmas when they were having things delivered almost daily. The drivers will also often go through the wrong gate and find their way to the door by going through my back garden, instead of up the side of the house. More than once if I’ve had the back door open on a nice day I’ve come into the sitting room to find a parcel that’s not mine on my sitting room floor- one time it was left on the sofa!

I’ve been hoovering and cleaning up the sitting room this evening, and got really hot while I was doing it so after I was finished I took my wig off to cool down (I have a hair loss problem and am mostly bald) and was just sitting on the sofa watching the tennis. Next thing I know some gormless Amazon driver is peering through my window yelling “flat 3??” I shook my head and pointed to indicate it was the door next to mine, and he just stood there and stared at me. I’m really self conscious about my hair loss and don’t even let DH see my without my head covered up, so I was totally humiliated by this total fucking stranger goggling at me through my window.

AIBU to be sick of the constant invasion of my privacy? And what the hell do I do about it?

I'm sorry that happened to you. You have nothing to feel embarrassed about. Who stares in people's windows?! What about a sign?

BarbarianMum · 28/06/2021 20:12

YANBU but it's unlikely to stop. You could try notices on the gates. Otherwise privacy film or net curtains.

BarbarianMum · 28/06/2021 20:13

Oh and it obviously isnt really obvious if this keeps happening.

Crazycakelady17 · 28/06/2021 20:13

Cheeky git; sorry he made you feel like that maybe get some blinds or something or just tell them to get fucked next time

CoffeeBeansGalore · 28/06/2021 20:22

Can you put your house number on your back door?
Put a lock on your garden gate so they can't just waltz into your garden.
Add a notice to the gate "No Access to (neighbour's no)".

Howshouldibehave · 28/06/2021 20:26

Blinds on the window and lock on your gate.

GreenClock · 28/06/2021 20:29

A lock on the gate or a sign saying “no access to number 3” should do the trick.

PumpkinKlNG · 28/06/2021 20:32

I would put a sign

Greenbks · 28/06/2021 20:33

Put up a sign

RandomMess · 28/06/2021 20:36

Your number on your gate and back door.

NigellaSeed · 28/06/2021 20:37

That really sucks. Yanbu. I think the house no in your back door was a good suggestion.

Do you have a nice view or could you put up that sticker frosting?

Chloemol · 28/06/2021 20:41

So put a large sign on your door saying flat 3 xx colour door next to this one, and we dint take parcels for them

Put up privacy glass or net curtains if there are lots of people delivering

Or consider moving

Jasmine11 · 28/06/2021 20:45

Can you get window films to give yourself more privacy? It sounds very annoying.

TillyTopper · 28/06/2021 20:53

As PP have said, if this keep happening then I can't be completely obvious. Why not put a lock on gate, sign up, "frost" the windows. Problem sorted.

Erikrie · 28/06/2021 20:55

I would put window film on the window.

IceLace100 · 28/06/2021 20:56

This is annoying!

I'd put a large clear sign in your window exactly where they look through. Large letters in red against white, or something else very fluorescent/ obvious.

Add some voile curtains or similar.

Then steadfastly ignore Grin

theemmadilemma · 28/06/2021 21:00

I imagine this is one where it looks to you like it's perfectly clear who's door/window/garden is who's, but if it keeps happing it clearly isn't, so I think creating privacy is your best bet.

Shit situation though and must be frustrating.

crochetcrazy1978 · 28/06/2021 21:09

You can buy mirrored window film which looks like a mirror to anyone looking in but is clear to you. I'd do that and put a sign up saying you don't take parcels

IAmAWomanNotACis · 28/06/2021 21:19

Do you have net curtains, or blinds? There's quite a lot you can do to stop people from being able to look in through the window.

Padlock the gate for sure. Nobody should be wandering into your house.

Classicbrunette · 28/06/2021 21:27

Put signs up everywhere. Make the whole entry into gardens idiot proof.

LeSquigh · 28/06/2021 21:43

YANBU to feel this way however it is obvious why this is happening. I agree, you are going to have to put up a sign.

BlankTimes · 28/06/2021 21:44

The drivers will also often go through the wrong gate and find their way to the door by going through my back garden, instead of up the side of the house

Lock the gate and put a sign and diagram on it for the drivers showing the correct way they need to go to get to your neighbour.

malmi · 28/06/2021 21:46

Privacy film or net curtains. A sign won't work.

altforvarmt · 28/06/2021 21:51

I'd also recommend the mirror window film; it'll either give them a scare so they don't look in your window again, or you'll catch them admiring themselves in their reflection.

Just be aware that the transparency reverses at night - if you have the lights on, people will see straight in, but you won't see out.

Beautiful3 · 28/06/2021 21:54

I would lock your back gate and put a sign on it displaying your flat number. You can buy them personalised, quite cheaply on amazon.
