Who was UR, me or cyclist?

I'll be prepared to be told IABU as I have often heard cycling rules spoken about on here that I didn't know but I'm not sure how I could be!

Approaching a roundabout today, there was a long line of traffic coming the other way.

Suddenly as I was getting close to the roundabout a group of cyclists one after the other came around the traffic (on the inside and on my side of the road). I very nearly hit them and got a mouthful of abuse off one of them.

I couldn't see them coming round the cars (couldn't see them over the top of the cars and there is a building on the corner of the roundabout too) until the first was in front of me on my side of the road. I obviously did manage to stop in time.

Should they not have gone on the inside (pavement side) of the traffic if they wanted to get round and surely not on the other side of the road?

Diagram for info!

Who was UR, me or cyclist?

If they were on the wrong side of the road then they were wrong

Toottooot · 27/06/2021 18:13

They were on the wrong side of the road is that correct?

TyrionsNextWife · 27/06/2021 18:13

Are you saying that the cyclists were on the wrong side of the road when leaving the round about?

RoundaboutMadness · 27/06/2021 18:14

They were 100% on my side of the road when coming round the traffic / when leaving the roundabout yes.

He had to shoot over to the correct side in between some of the stood still cars in the traffic to avoid me. And then gave me a load of shit.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 27/06/2021 18:15

Were they heading towards you?

That is an excellent diagram by the way!

DinosaurDiana · 27/06/2021 18:15

So they were over taking the cars that were coming off the roundabout ?
If so they’re being dicks, and I’m a cyclist.

PurpleyBlue · 27/06/2021 18:15

Nice diagram. They shouldn't be overtaking if they can't see the coast is clear.

chickenyhead · 27/06/2021 18:15

I'm not sure I am understanding, but they would appear from your picture to be on the correct side. Not undertaking.

RoundaboutMadness · 27/06/2021 18:17

The arrows on the cars are the directions we were going.

I was going toward the roundabout, the traffic was coming away from the roundabout (same as bikes).

They obviously didn't know I was coming toward the roundabout and thought they'd just shoot up the other side past all the traffic but were met by me when they got to leaving the roundabout!

OP posts:
Sirzy · 27/06/2021 18:18

So they where undertaking on a roundabout? And a roundabout on the other side of a bend?

Sounds like they where cyclists with a death wish!

RoundaboutMadness · 27/06/2021 18:18

They were going away from the roundabout (same as the traffic) I was going toward the roundabout. They came off the roundabout on my side of the road.

Absolutely the cyclists fault if they were on the wrong side of the road. A cyclist will be along in a minute to say they weren't though.

And yes, a truly excellent diagram - top marks!

chickenyhead · 27/06/2021 18:19

Oh wow! They shouldn't be crossing the middle at all. Outrageous!

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 27/06/2021 18:20

If I’m understanding it correctly, they were cycling incredibly dangerously! So they were on the outside of traffic going their way, overtaking cars on their side, and basically met you head on?

LadyCatStark · 27/06/2021 18:20

They are of course unreasonable but you’ll get some posters who will be willing to argue to the death it’s somehow your fault!

I stopped just before a junction in slow moving traffic to let a cyclist turn into the junction and he gave me a mouthful of abuse. I’ve literally no idea why!!

LakieLady · 27/06/2021 18:20

If they were on the wrong side of the road, they were in the wrong.

You should only use the wrong side of the road for overtaking if there is nothing coming and it is safe to do so.

RoundaboutMadness · 27/06/2021 18:21

Yes exactly this. They were overtaking traffic on their side, on the outside (and over the line) and met me head on as I was coming up to the roundabout (so fortunately was already breaking).

I think the cyclists are being unreasonable in this instance

HildegardNightingale · 27/06/2021 18:23

Excellent diagram. Absolutely 100% they were in the wrong. Stupid cyclists.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 27/06/2021 18:23

@RoundaboutMadness I cycle into central London from south London 3 x a week (about 15 miles each way) and there’s absolutely no way I would ever do this. Incredibly dangerous, and completely out of order to give you abuse!

RoundaboutMadness · 27/06/2021 18:24

Okay thank you. I was really worried about it afterwards. I always try to be very cautious of other people using the roads.

It's going to worry me every time I use a roundabout now!!

OP posts:
boydy99 · 27/06/2021 18:25

cyclists being unreasonable and I'm a cyclist as is DH, neither of us would do this.

RoundaboutMadness · 27/06/2021 18:25

I realise I've muddled up my outside and insides throughout too sorry, I trust you all know what I meant!

OP posts:
ladygracie · 27/06/2021 18:31

So if any of the cars they were overtaking had gone across the roundabout they would have hit the cyclists? Or were the cars all turning left? Definitely dangerous behaviour from them and you were not wrong. What did he shout at you? As in how did he possibly think you were in the wrong???

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 27/06/2021 18:31

bike wankers
