Who was UR, me or cyclist?

I'll be prepared to be told IABU as I have often heard cycling rules spoken about on here that I didn't know but I'm not sure how I could be!

Approaching a roundabout today, there was a long line of traffic coming the other way.

Suddenly as I was getting close to the roundabout a group of cyclists one after the other came around the traffic (on the inside and on my side of the road). I very nearly hit them and got a mouthful of abuse off one of them.

I couldn't see them coming round the cars (couldn't see them over the top of the cars and there is a building on the corner of the roundabout too) until the first was in front of me on my side of the road. I obviously did manage to stop in time.

Should they not have gone on the inside (pavement side) of the traffic if they wanted to get round and surely not on the other side of the road?

Diagram for info!

They were in the wrong

LuaDipa · 27/06/2021 18:36

They were on the wrong side of the road. Yanbu.

PurpleyBlue · 27/06/2021 18:38

I mean you should be on the look out for hazards but you stopped so you obviously were. Don't give them any more thought. They were probably embarrassed/shocked so thought they should yell at you in front of their mates.

SisterMonicaJoansHabit · 27/06/2021 18:39

They were in the wrong. That was a super dangerous move to make.

I went round stationary traffic on a long straight bit of road once, doing 5-10mph, like these cyclists - no roundabout or other apparent problems, and was hit by a car parked on the curb on the other side of the cars on my side of the road (wasn't a major accident because I was pootling along soon slowly).

And I only did it because my supervisor at work used to say I had no reason to blame the traffic on me ever being late because as a moped driver I should be performing that manoeuvre as standard.

I feel I shouldn't have overtaken.

If these cyclists hadn't been lucky, they'd have had much much worse than I did, being hit. They're idiots.

PhoenixReincarnated · 27/06/2021 18:40

The cyclists were in the wrong. Nice diagram btw

Toiletrollbuyer · 27/06/2021 18:44

I’m a cyclist, you were right and they were wrong.

Absolutely fantastic diagram 10/10

RoundaboutMadness · 27/06/2021 18:45

@ladygracie

So if any of the cars they were overtaking had gone across the roundabout they would have hit the cyclists? Or were the cars all turning left? Definitely dangerous behaviour from them and you were not wrong. What did he shout at you? As in how did he possibly think you were in the wrong???
Yes I guess. They were all turning left though fortunately.

He called me a fucking c*nt which was nice Smile

How can you be hit by a parked car?
3scape · 27/06/2021 18:48

Overtaking a line of traffic on a small vehicle is allowed if you DON'T cross the line in order to do it.

If they're having to come off the roundabout on the wrong side of the road taking what you're describing as a fairly visually blocked path then they were in the wrong. No doubt they're wankers that dream of having their own little tour de prattsville and pretending the roads are closed and the shouting and waving they get are fans rather than infuriated road users.
Hopefully they'll all get punctures in the tyres and gel undies

Notjustanymum · 27/06/2021 18:50

Cyclists were right to overtake on the outside, but not to do this so dangerously. Definitely wrong to be arsey about it to you! It’s cyclists like this who give law abiding ones a bad name!

blobby10 · 27/06/2021 19:04

Cyclists were unreasonable- don’t understand why they gave you grief when they were on your side of the line!

dapsnotplimsolls · 27/06/2021 19:18

Entitled arseholes.

mineofuselessinformation · 27/06/2021 19:20

They're complete arses.
I once wound down my window to inform a cyclist he was a twat as he undertook me in traffic, and then proceeded to slow right down as he was turning left anyway - from right in front of me. Why he couldn't have just waited was beyond me.....

jaundicedoutlook · 27/06/2021 19:21

Because…

Outbutnotoutout · 27/06/2021 19:25

The cyclists 🚴‍♂️ were wrong.

I would have given a mouthful back

Lougle · 27/06/2021 19:30

You're right that they shouldn't have been in your path, but what they were doing (until the point that they went into your path) was right. They should never undertake, which would be going to the left of the queue of cars. They should always overtake (going to the right of them) but they should behave as any other road user, so they should have checked that your lane was clear before they overtook.

toconclude · 27/06/2021 19:36

Cyclist. Unsurprisingly, as, in my extensive experience as a pedestrian, so many are entitled road/path hogs. Bring it on, outraged lycra brigade.

But they shouldn’t be overtaking if something was coming, they should have stopped like all the other cars but that would have meant that’s have to 😱 unclip their shoes or worse, it could spoil their PB 😱😱.
AnUnoriginalUsername · 27/06/2021 21:07

They were absolutely in the wrong over taking on a roundabout and being on the wrong side of the road when it wasn't clear.
You didn't do anything wrong.

Butchyrestingface · 27/06/2021 21:20

I have no ideas about the cycling situation OP (haven't passed my test). But that is a shite hot diagram. You are obviously someone who likes to give that extra 10%.

🌟🌟🌟

Phineyj · 27/06/2021 21:27

I reckon that the drivers that are careful around cyclists get the verbal abuse because we are going slow enough to abuse! There may also be an element of misogyny sometimes. I was verbally abused by a cyclist once and I felt sure afterwards he wouldn't have said the things he did to some guy in a big fast car.

boydy99 · 27/06/2021 21:41

not all cyclists are awful, just want to say! I agree 100% these were in the wrong and I hate it so much when other cyclists give the rest of us a bad name! it actually causes us more danger on the road as drivers are more inclined to be aggressive or less careful towards cyclists thinking we are all red light jumping, illegally overtaking, and irresponsible!

i am late 20s, female, not massively confident on my bike but getting better and I pootle around on my ebike, I do wear lycra as DH is big on cycling and cycle gear (lycra) is far more comfortable. DH also a cyclist and takes out kids from the school as he's a coach there too. both of us responsible and treat other road and path users with respect. we've had quite a few close calls though and DH was knocked off before. I absolutely love cycling, it gives me freedom, exercise and improves my mental health, but I do get nervous about using the road with vehicles and more so when I know people hate cyclists so much 😔 I just want to put it out there that most cyclists are like me or my DH, enjoying our sport while respecting other road users, and are not weird, obsessive and angry!

BuggersMuddle · 27/06/2021 21:50

I’m a cyclist. The cyclists were on the correct side of traffic for overtaking but they were absolutely in the wrong to do so by crossing the line in the face of oncoming traffic. (Like any other vehicle tbh. Yeah you can crawl down the pavement side passing a few cars at traffic lights, but it’s not what you’re supposed to do and for serious overtaking is not great,’)

Rosebel · 27/06/2021 22:24

Perhaps you met my exbf best mate. He used to cycle like this and would get shitty with car drivers.
How he didn't get killed was a mystery. He was generally a bit of a dickkead though so although I don't want to generalise they probably were too.
They were in the wrong. Not your fault at all.
