AIBU to be annoyed at Wimbledon debacle?

Yesterday, Wimbledon announced that you had to be registered on their website to take part in today's ticket sale.

"You must be registered with myWIMBLEDON...by midnight BST on Wednesday 16 June in order to access the ticketing platform for the initial sale"

I've got an account so duly logged in and checked it was still active. There were no additional conditions or instructions.

Today, they announced that everyone who had registered would receive an access code via email, which Ticketmaster needed to complete the purchase.

No code arrived. Got through the queue on Ticketmaster to the purchase screen and still no code = no tickets for me. Lots of people on Twitter also posting that they hadn't received a code and missed out on tickets.

Wimbledon have now posted a message on their website saying that I didn't get a code because I didn't sign up for their "marketing communications". AIBU to be annoyed that this was only mentioned AFTER the ticket sale had happened.

"In order to participate in the sale, guests needed to be registered with myWIMBLEDON, and opted in to receive marketing communications from us in their myWIMBLEDON profile so that we could legally contact them. We issued codes to each guest who had registered and opted in so that we could protect the purchase of only one pair of tickets per guest. These codes were unique to each individual and were all issued by 12.50, ahead of the sale commencing at 13.00.

The vast majority of guests have had no issues and successfully purchased tickets. We appreciate the disappointment of those who were not able to get tickets on this occasion, but there will be additional opportunities to purchase tickets for this year's Championships. We encourage all those interested to make sure they are opted in to receive marketing communications from us. "

YANBU - Wimbledon should have made the conditions clearer
YABU - They were right to only send codes to people who opted in to marketing

They should totally have made it clear. Seems like they messed up and can't admit it.

ATowelAndAPotato · 17/06/2021 18:24

What do you think selling tickets is, if not marketing??

SouthOfFrance · 17/06/2021 18:24

Selling tickets isn't marketing, it's selling tickets.
Telling people you can buy tickets/how to buy them is marketing.

ATowelAndAPotato · 17/06/2021 18:29

And they have used the marketing to tell people how buy them... if I am interested in buying something from someone I sign up for marketing emails...

FrownedUpon · 17/06/2021 18:31

Not much point being annoyed. Just try again tomorrow.

IsThisNameTaken · 17/06/2021 18:35

Having a code didn't help - I was on the ticketing site at 13:01, sat in a queue for half and hour and then nothing available when I got to the front.

SouthOfFrance · 17/06/2021 18:35

Why would you sign up for marketing emails for everything you are interested in buying?

mumonthehill · 17/06/2021 18:36

I logged on at 1 and there were thousands of people in the queue in front of me, I gave up.

NewPapaGuinea · 17/06/2021 18:40

It shouldn’t have even come down to being clearer. An access code to purchase tickets isn’t marketing material.

ATowelAndAPotato · 17/06/2021 18:42

Not for everything. But in this case I was very interested in buying Wimbledon tickets so I made sure I had signed up for marketing emails so I didn’t miss anything.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 17/06/2021 18:44

My code didn’t arrive until 1.06, when I was already in the queue, and I only stumbled across it by accident when I was waiting. The whole code thing wasn’t communicated at all.

Justfivemoreminutesplease · 17/06/2021 18:45

Well my DM got to number 14 in the queue, then nothing. So at least you didn’t have that annoyance.

GappyValley · 17/06/2021 18:47

Unfortunately, it’s GDPR

If you previously ticked a box to say they aren’t allowed to send you anything, they aren’t allowed to send you a code

Yes they probably could have made it clearer but realistically, they knew the tickets would be oversubscribed hundreds of times over so probably didn’t want even more traffic to the website

HeronLanyon · 17/06/2021 18:47

YANBU if all of that is right ! What a mess.

Iamserena · 17/06/2021 18:48

I logged on at 13:02 with 36000 in front of me. Got to the front of the queue at 13:40 and there were no tickets left. Tried again about an hour later and managed to get tickets for week 2.

hanahsaunt · 17/06/2021 18:50

I have had a My Wimbledon account since July 2019. They send me emails. They did NOT send me a code so despite getting to the head of the queue (for the last Sunday 😭😭) I couldn't buy them. GDPR my arse - my account post dates it and they send me other things.

kindlyensure · 17/06/2021 19:11

My code came at 13.26, so not the 12.50 advertised. So I've just used my code for a pair of tickets and because my card had to be verified by the bank it said I'd timed out. So I tried again and this time got a pair of tickets, yay! - except turns out the first order did go through, despite it saying it didn't. So now I have two pairs of tickets - on one code and aren't you only allowed one pair of tickets per person? What a shambles.

Me too
goldierocks · 17/06/2021 19:19

I think I got seriously lucky. I had a seizure this morning and wasn't well enough to log on when the system opened. I tried at 14:30, was connected immediately and got a pair of Centre Court tickets for the second week.

I did get the marketing emails but it wasn't particularly clear that you need to have received both Covid jabs by 3rd June. If you haven't, you won't be allowed in. If a ticket holder is bringing someone under 18, they'll need to provide a negative lateral flow test.

If you can't provide your vaccination status and photo ID, you won't be admitted (presumably the tickets will be re-sold via the revised returns system).

I read that more tickets will go on sale in a couple of days.

Where have you got that info from? Everything I read said 2 COVID jabs OR a negative lateral flow (if 11 or older) OR evidence of immunity with a +ve PCR within 180 days
Emmacb82 · 17/06/2021 19:32

I didn’t get my code until 13:11 so by the time I’d got to the front of the queue again it was too late. It’s unfortunate but it was always going to be near impossible to get tickets anyway. Will keep trying as you never know. Well done to those who got through!

Ellesbelles04 · 17/06/2021 19:40

I got the code, but things were sold out after you entered it. Managed to get two tickets in basket and then bloody Ticketnaster foiled me. No joy despite understanding the set up and the code requirement… so more demand than tickets event if you did get things in time.

My main issue is their failure to apologise properly. I also think they could have done an online raffle or ballot.

So much annoyance and wasted time.

queennotififi · 17/06/2021 19:43

Yes, congratulations to those who got tickets!

I actually thought I had already selected to receive ticketing communications. When I look at the marketing preferences in my account, here is the list of choices and what I had selected.

What would you have selected to make sure you got the ticketing code? Email, maybe?

All ticket-holders attending The Championships will be required to show proof of COVID status upon entry, either in the form of both vaccinations (first and second dose), and with the second dose 14 days ago; OR a negative lateral flow test (for those aged 11 and over).
Proof of a negative lateral flow test taken within 48hrs of attending the event can be displayed via SMS text, or via email.

I read that to mean you need to be double jabbed or you need to have a negative LFT
