AIBU to be annoyed at Wimbledon debacle?

Yesterday, Wimbledon announced that you had to be registered on their website to take part in today's ticket sale.

"You must be registered with myWIMBLEDON...by midnight BST on Wednesday 16 June in order to access the ticketing platform for the initial sale"

I've got an account so duly logged in and checked it was still active. There were no additional conditions or instructions.

Today, they announced that everyone who had registered would receive an access code via email, which Ticketmaster needed to complete the purchase.

No code arrived. Got through the queue on Ticketmaster to the purchase screen and still no code = no tickets for me. Lots of people on Twitter also posting that they hadn't received a code and missed out on tickets.

Wimbledon have now posted a message on their website saying that I didn't get a code because I didn't sign up for their "marketing communications". AIBU to be annoyed that this was only mentioned AFTER the ticket sale had happened.

"In order to participate in the sale, guests needed to be registered with myWIMBLEDON, and opted in to receive marketing communications from us in their myWIMBLEDON profile so that we could legally contact them. We issued codes to each guest who had registered and opted in so that we could protect the purchase of only one pair of tickets per guest. These codes were unique to each individual and were all issued by 12.50, ahead of the sale commencing at 13.00.

The vast majority of guests have had no issues and successfully purchased tickets. We appreciate the disappointment of those who were not able to get tickets on this occasion, but there will be additional opportunities to purchase tickets for this year's Championships. We encourage all those interested to make sure they are opted in to receive marketing communications from us. "

YANBU - Wimbledon should have made the conditions clearer
YABU - They were right to only send codes to people who opted in to marketing

So for those tickets going on sale later, can you/will you be sent another code if you already got one today? And if so will it only be sent to those who didn’t purchase tickets today?

kindlyensure · 17/06/2021 20:52

Yes, that's right. Either or. Seems pretty clear to me.

I feel you OP, my code didn’t arrive til 1.15 but luckily having started at 28000 in the queue I didn’t reach the front of the line til 1.30 and DH had tipped me off that a code was needed as he’d seen one in his emails.

We got lucky with tickets because we went for a day which obviously wasn’t one of the most immediately popular dates and I was relatively early in the queue. Ticketmaster nearly scuppered me because I couldn’t remember my login, that also hadn’t been communicated at all by Wimbledon. Overall though I clearly can’t complain because I got exactly what I wanted and I’m proper chuffed too, massive fingers crossed it all goes ahead and we can go 🤞🏻

I was logged in for a long time today & didn't end up with any tickets Sad

Will try again tomorrow!

I managed to get some today 😁 originally tried for court 1, queue was 16,000 odd. Opened another window and chose court 3, only 2 people ahead of me! So try queuing for multiple courts in different tabs.

Hmph. Now I am really grumpy. They managed to email me today with nothing changed on my account settings to invite me to try today for tickets but no code yesterday. Hours online to no avail ... oh well ... another day ...

queennotififi · 18/06/2021 21:13

I emailed to ask which marketing communication settings I need to select as there seem to be about 20 on the website and I had already selected the "Tickets" option.

I got a generic response which didn't answer my question. Still in the dark.

Worked fine for me although I did have to queue for nearly 4 hours. Code came fine in advance as requested. Process was straightforward. Selected and bought tickets in under 5 minutes once I got in. That was via my LTA membership though, not sure if that makes any difference.

I also easily got tickets via the LTA sale. Only (!) a 1.5 hour queue for me, then once I was in it was a quick and smooth purchase. The public sale was on a different ticketing platform, but for me also worked fine. I did give up waiting in a queue of 25000 people for the men's final as I knew that was more than the Centre court capacity. Tried no 1 court instead and was in a 5000 person queue.

In term of what boxes to tick, I have tickets and ballots ticked, as well as favourites, general info and one other (I don't recall which) and email and post as the contact methods. I assume it was the tickets and ballots and email ticks which got me the code.

Kitkat151 · 19/06/2021 01:02

Will there be another sale??

PurpleyBlue · 19/06/2021 05:59

They should have made it clear, especially as none of the preferences say "Marketing". But yes it looks like you haven't opted in to any communication from them so they can't communicate.

PurpleyBlue · 19/06/2021 06:00

"tickets and ballots" sounds like it would work but you havent told them how to contact you about the tickets and ballots
