AIBU BOSS WRITES EMAIL HEADERS IN CAPITALS

BettyBurntBuns · 15/06/2021 21:14

As above, my boss writes email headers/subject line in capitals.

Every single email.

Small annoyance but I can’t tell him...

Oh that would annoy me too Grin Do you know why he does it? Is it to make his emails stand out so you’ll notice them and action them faster?

fourquenelles · 15/06/2021 21:18

Think it might be a throw back to when business was conducted through "real" letters

Dear Sir/Madam

SUBJECT IN CAPITALS

Text

Yours faithfully

Mr/Ms Traditionalist

BettyBurntBuns · 15/06/2021 21:20

It’s not a letter though.... I’ve said softly “oh spam Filters might pick it up” but nope ...

No he doesn’t understand it’s not what you do. I can understand URGENT being in bold, but his emails aren’t like that

Of course its not a letter but if they where late to emailing it might just be a habit formed from their previous experience. It must be very annoying!
WimpoleHat · 15/06/2021 21:25

Do you work for my husband? He does this (even in emails to me 😂😂)

PotassiumChloride · 15/06/2021 22:08

Could be worse. I know people who start of the message in the subject header and finish it in the main body of the email.

“Subject Header: Does anyone have any objection……

Main Body: …….if I take next Tuesday off for an appointment?”

Op, YAdefNBU.

My pet hate is people who don't use salutations:

John,

Please do x.

Simon

So bloody rude, just add a Hi/Dear and a Best wishes/ Many thanks/ Kind regards!

PicaK · 15/06/2021 22:48

Why can't you tell him?

Why not just tell him, or at least stop complaining that your incredibly-easy-to-miss hint didn’t land?
BettyBurntBuns · 16/06/2021 00:09

He’s my boss @PicaK and @DeadGood ....

OP posts:
Susannahmoody · 16/06/2021 00:10

God yes, v annoying

You'll have to just sign off with a clipped 'Regards' and feel better that way

Patapouf · 16/06/2021 00:12

So shouty

BettyBurntBuns · 16/06/2021 00:14

“Stop complaining” it’s MumsNet love

That minefield.... What’s the best one to use?

We get a daily update sent in ALL CAPS (the whole text of the email) and up to seven different colours of text. It also means spell check doesn't pick up on typos. I've sent an email explaining that all caps makes it harder to read for dyslexics, with a link for further information. This went unacknowledged because I'm a woman not in management and nothing has changed...

chipsandgin · 16/06/2021 00:40

I would have to say something regardless of him being my boss. There must be a way to approach it lightheartedly (or deviously- try and blame a client who “mentioned it”!?).

It’s impossible not to read caps as shouting & that would annoy me too much to just let it go!

BettyBurntBuns · 16/06/2021 00:41

Lols got to love working in an office

Sadly i don’t speak to anyone outside the business. He also doesn’t know the difference between @gmail.com and @googlemail.com plus a host of other things.... so I’ll let him be

I suppose it's shouty but I really couldn't bring myself to get excited about this, tbh. It'd be different if it was the whole email, but just a heading? Nah.

If it annoys you that much you'll have to find a way to tell him.

TheCraicDealer · 16/06/2021 00:46

A (recently ex) colleague of mine used to use all caps in all his files on our system, most of which I inherited. I asked him about it one day and he said it was something they did in one of his first jobs and he just kept doing it. I told him I didn't like it, it was like the file was shouting at me. Luckily he laughed. But he still kept doing it.

Agh people who do it, just because.

The thing is, my boss is 50.... people the same age as his and within the team don’t do it

Probably this.

I’d make a few jokey WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING COMMENTS

BluePeterVag · 16/06/2021 01:00

This level of wanting to control emails is just weird. I remember when our IT Dept blocked websites with the word “mail” in them so people couldn’t log on to Hotmail or Gmail in work time. Massive fuck up because it meant no one could access the Royal Mail website for post code checks, postage tracking etc.
Sometimes it is easier to sit back and watch the chaos unfold, followed by the change of mind 🍿
