To ask for alcohol free drinks recommendations that aren't full of sugar?

I know I'm not being AIBU, am posting here for traffic.

I'm trying to lose weight and recognise that my 'glass' of wine on a Friday night soon turns into a bottle which turns into snacking on crisps and chocolate... so am cutting it out for the foreseeable but struggling with what to replace it with. So far we've tried:

  • sparkling water abs lots lemon and lime which ticks the low sugar box but a bit dull
  • schloer- so overly sweet
  • slushy iced mocktails made with berries - nice but a faff

Anyway would love to have some recommendations of adult type soft drinks or alcohol free drinks which are actually nice. I know there's Becks Blue etc which I had whilst pregnant years ago but wondering if there's anything more exciting- preferably that can be bought from Tesco today Grin
Thanks!

I quite like the cans of sugar free shandy from tesco. You can pour them out into a nice glass and imagine you’re in a beer garden.

I’ve always got Becks Blue in the fridge too.

RedlightGreenlight · 11/06/2021 10:52

Tonic water is nice and refreshing and the flavoured ones aren't too sweet.

Demelza82 · 11/06/2021 10:52

Low cal flavoured tonics, normal slimline tonic with fruit garnish, Caleno zero alcohol spirit - can get it online or in Sainsbury's. Natureo dealcoholised wine is the nicest of the fake wines I've tried

lastqueenofscotland · 11/06/2021 10:54

Yep tonic water is lovely

Obviouspretzel · 11/06/2021 10:55

Brewdog nanny state. They have others too that are good, but a can of nanny state is 20cals.

They also do hazy AF and Punk AF which are nice. These are all dependent on you liking craft beers obviously.

Also like fever tree tonic with some ice, rosemary, mint, lime, cucumber (not all at same time haha)

BeastOfBODMAS · 11/06/2021 10:55

I love the Morrisons’best’ rhubarb tonic on its own, it’s sugar free. Not sure if there is a Tesco equivalent.

Or a fresh fruit juice topped up with sparkling water (about 1:4 ratio) - on apple and mango at the moment

Virgin mojitos are good
a virgin mary is basically a salad if you eat the garnish Grin

Obviouspretzel · 11/06/2021 10:56

Naturally light fever tree tonic I meant to say. Has a lot less sugar and doesn't taste chemically like many others.

PawsQueen · 11/06/2021 10:56

Think Tesco do the Ugly and le joli sparkling flavoured range

barneymcgroo · 11/06/2021 10:56

When I was pregnant I drank a lot of tonic water with a dash of angostura bitters. Yes, I know they've got alcohol in, but it's a dash so barely counts.

cheesecrackerz · 11/06/2021 10:57

Sparkling water with elderflower cordial

Tomcullenisahero · 11/06/2021 10:57

I like tonic water if I'm not drinking alcohol, I put frozen berries in mine.
There's lots of nice non alcoholic beers too, Brewdog's Nanny state and Birra Moretti are my favourites

TurnStone · 11/06/2021 10:57

Iced tea: using instant tea granules dissolved in a small amount of boiling water, then topped up with ice and cold water. Flavoured with a dash of NAS squash, or you can use flavoured water (eg. peach) for the cold water top-up.
And there are all the different low-calorie colas .

Rock shandy, using a few drops of Angostura bitters (expensive to buy but a bottle lasts ages) and equal parts low-cal lemonade and sparkling water.

Acunningruse · 11/06/2021 10:57

These are brilliant, thank you! That rhubarb tonic sounds lovely. Will look out fever tree ones at Tesco and love the idea of getting some mint too.

I have fruity kombucha in the fridge for tonight- first time for everything etc

Acunningruse · 11/06/2021 10:59

Will look out for the Brewdog or Birra Moretti ones for DH thanks.

What exactly is angostura bitters?! I know it's an ingredient in some cocktails but can you buy it in supermarkets?

Acunningruse · 11/06/2021 11:01

I had to google what kombucha is Blush
Alcohol free drinks have certainly come a long way since I was pregnant. Tho in France whilst I was pregnant I had the most AMAZING lemon alcohol-free lager- must google to see if you can get it here!

Slimline tonic with slices of lemon and lime
TurnStone · 11/06/2021 11:01

... and low-calorie ginger beer is lovely with a slice of lime and/or a drop of NAS lime cordial Grin

MaloInAnAppleTree · 11/06/2021 11:02

Yes you can buy angostura bitters in supermarkets.

I like alcohol free Weissbiers. Bavaria do a good one, very refreshing on a summers day.

Serpenta · 11/06/2021 11:03

A jug of sparkling water with lots of mint and chopped strawberries left to marinate for a while gives you a really refreshing and tasty (and sugar free) soft drink.

TurnStone · 11/06/2021 11:04

Angostura . Available in supermarkets near the spirits shelves

Soda water with bitters, ice, lemon is also great.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 11/06/2021 11:11

Robinsons mint and line cordial is lovely
I'm not sure on the sugar though, with ice and soda water!
