Is it possible to have a ceiling fan that doesn't look as though you're decor is stuck in the 80's?

We have a very hot house. We have been here for 18 months and the first thing we said was "fuck me, those ceiling fans need to go."

Except we are entering our second summer here and we have accepted that they are an necessity (along side the open windows, closed curtains and tower fans - it's THAT hot in here).

So I'm looking at new ceiling fans. An updated version.
And they are all grim. They all look so dated.

Does anyone have a nice ceiling fan?! Is it possible?!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a nice one, or one that did anything except circulate hot air to absolutely no one’s benefit.

I have a weird phobia of them from childhood. Not sure why, but they kind of freak me out.

Depending on your house decor, there are some nice ones with blades that resemble palm leaves

May not go with everything though

I just googled 'modern ceiling fans' and loads came up on the image search, most of which looked pretty inoffensive and timeless, some of which very futuristic looking. You might get more luck buying from US or European sites as they might have more options due to warmer weather?

If my house was that hot I'd just get air con installed though tbh rather than managing multiple different fans/window opening schedule etc.

We have this one

It has 3 speeds and is really quiet.

StopSayingDueDiligence · 10/06/2021 19:05

That's what I've been Googling @thevassal.
I think I need to accept that I just don't like ceiling fans.

Ceiling fans are so naff. Right up there along with bidets.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 10/06/2021 19:13

Following because I accept that a ceiling fan would be extremely practical in our very hot house, but also absolutely hate them.

Bizawit · 10/06/2021 19:15

Honestly when I was looking I thought they were as ugly as hell. Ended up buying the plainest ones I could find. Now they are up they are honestly completely inoffensive and don’t change the decor. Regular visitors didn’t even notice them, until it became apparent that my flat was a lot cooler/ more comfortable in the summer. Do it! They’ve made all the difference to my level of comfort at home on hot days ; work much better than regular fans which are actually also ugly/ more prominent and take up space.

I think the ones with wooden blades can look quite nice.

Are there any other options you haven't explored? Does the house have a ventilation system?

isthismylifenow · 10/06/2021 19:20

I'm not in UK but we get quite nice ones with retractable blades. My dd has one, it had a blue tooth speaker in it as well. And 3 light settings. We only found these out after, it was renamed the ceiling fan that keeps on giving. It's works by remote control and it's really quiet.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 10/06/2021 19:22

I hate them too, and removed the one in the plan of our brand new house (not in uk).
2 summers later I caved and we put in a 2 blade wooden one that looks like an airplane propeller. It’s not too offensive

Nightbear · 10/06/2021 19:27

I’m with Bizawit. As plain as possible so they blend into the ceiling.

Some of the minimalist wooden ones look good in a room with a high ceiling, but if you have a high ceiling (in the U.K.) you probably don’t need a ceiling fan.

I think this is your best bet actually because they sort of blend in with the ceiling as they're the same colour.

Iconic lights have a good selection here: www.iconiclights.co.uk/all-ceiling-lights/ceiling-fans

We run quite hot and I hate floorstanding fans so it was a reasonable compromise for us. When we get the loft converted properly I'm hoping to fit aircon in the bedrooms too, but until then this will do!

Pinkylemons · 10/06/2021 19:29

We have this one. It’s brilliant. Being menopausal I couldn’t live without one now!

We bought one of these last year when it had a remote control. Love it. Very stylish. Looks like it's got WiFi now
