Is it possible to have a ceiling fan that doesn't look as though you're decor is stuck in the 80's?

We have a very hot house. We have been here for 18 months and the first thing we said was "fuck me, those ceiling fans need to go."

Except we are entering our second summer here and we have accepted that they are an necessity (along side the open windows, closed curtains and tower fans - it's THAT hot in here).

So I'm looking at new ceiling fans. An updated version.
And they are all grim. They all look so dated.

Does anyone have a nice ceiling fan?! Is it possible?!

There’s something so ‘Murder she wrote’ level 80s about them.

Get an air conditioner.

MyPoorOldDog · 10/06/2021 20:57

We have this in our bedroom. It is brilliant - www.keslighting.co.uk/mantra-alisio-white-ceiling-fan-led-light-dimmable-remote-controlled-m6705.html

MyPoorOldDog · 10/06/2021 20:58

Oh - I can see it is similar to the one Hairobsessed has posted.

GraduallyWatermelon · 10/06/2021 21:49

Ive never used them so can't vouch for quality bit you can get them with retractable blades..

Hopeisnotastrategy · 12/06/2021 06:21

We put them in the bedrooms in Spain last year, so much nicer than having the aircon on overnight.

I can only say what others have said - plain white so it blends in with the ceiling, and generally I'd avoid most of the plain ones with lights on, they do look indescribably naff.

We have a larger white colonial style one in the lounge that we inherited, and that looks very in keeping with bouganvillea and a palm tree visible from that window. Could you maybe plant something outside to get that vibe going a bit? 😄

The first two summers we were here I wasxqt the point where we were going to get aircon in our kitchen, then we had a patio canopy installed which also shaded the kitchen. The difference is astonishing, much better than keeping the curtains closed in the adjacent dining room.

What's the state of your roof? Our house was incredibly hot, stuffy and uncomfortable in warm weather. I was considering installing ceiling fans despite disliking them as much as you do OP. In what I thought was a totally unrelated issue, due to a number of cracked and leaking roof tiles we had the whole roof redone with new tiles, and new felting membrane. We also put in some insulation within the roof structure for the parts of the roof that didn't have any insulated attic area between the roof and the living space. I had no idea this would be making a difference in summer, I thought it was about keeping the house up to scratch for winter weather. Since having that work done the house is no longer unbearable in hot weather and whilst we still have a tower fan for the hottest days, there is no need to consider ceiling fans any longer.

Insulation will make a massive difference

billysboy · 12/06/2021 06:58

I have been looking into these as well , they do have to be within a certain distance from the ceiling to work best

Bluntness100 · 12/06/2021 07:15

Just get one with retractable blades.

I have ceiling fans in every room and in the kitchen
They are brilliant for getting rid of any flies
Switch it on and the flies fuck off - or rather they are blown off 😂
Wouldn’t be without them

Downunderduchess · 12/06/2021 07:25

I’m in Sydney, I have them as well as air conditioners in the living room & main bedroom. This one pictured is in the living room, it suits the decor & style of my home.

Just embrace the Havana look, that looks much better than plain white. Wish I could have one but our ceilings aren't high enough

Quickchangeartiste · 12/06/2021 07:28

We have one similar to this. This website has a big selection. Can switch direction to push warm air down in the winter.

QuitMoaning · 12/06/2021 07:40

I have them in the bedrooms and in Summer they are a godsend and we sleep peacefully and they are much cheaper than air con.
For all those people saying they are ugly (and I agree) :

  1. who else sees them?
  2. you are asleep so you don’t even see them much

For me, the peaceful restful sleep completely outweighs the ugliness.

And my fans are large so they don’t just push warm air about, the room definitely feels cooler when it is on although when we put it on high (using the remote control), it feels so powerful that I think the roof will lift off. 🤣

Here is mine and I genuinely don’t care what anyone thinks they look like, as I am lovely and cool at night no matter how hot it gets (installed over 10 years ago and this was the least ugly for me at that time).

Yes!! I love ours, we bought it after I couldn’t find a ceiling light I liked. It has been an absolute blessing for our west facing bedroom. The blades are reversible and white on the other side so we can tone the decor down or rock the kindergarten look GrinGrinGrin

I'm in Brisbane and have ceiling fans in every room. They're fantastic and mean you don't need to run the aircon anywhere near as much. Use the aircon when it's 32+ and fans when it's under that.

Cons are they get dirty / dusty - so select something with easy to clean straight blades. I just bought a little blind cleaning gizmo that works perfectly to clean the blades of the ceiling fans.

Mine are plain white with lights and are much less obnoxious than some light fittings you see.

As noted above, good insulation makes a huge difference. Inside my place can be up to 10degrees different to outside temps. Unfortunately I get full western sun which makes it really hot in the afternoons.

Oldraver · 12/06/2021 09:18

Mines bright blue so very 80's Grin

My Mum had one with plastic see through blades

I love that one and OH has just seen it and is now trying to figure out how to fit as well as our light fitting...which is almost the same colours
Herewegoagainok · 12/06/2021 09:33

If I'd seen one of those in the UK in the 80s I would have been so jealous. So to me fans are aspirational Grin may consider for the kitchen now actually as after cooking we often eat with the front door open for a draught which is annoying

LemonRoses · 12/06/2021 09:35

Impossible unless you live in a ‘colonial style’ villa or hotel in Sri Lanka or Tanzania.
