How many calories do you eat?

How many calories a day do you eat?

How old are you and what is your height and weight?

I'm 25 with a BMI of 37 at 15st 7. I was consuming at a guess 3000+ a day.
Currently dieting with calorie counting and reducing intake.

I'm having around 1000 calories a day now but really, I'm wondering, once I get to a weight I'm happy with, how many calories I should then be having to maintain.

So it would be interesting to hear how many calories people have daily.

OP posts:
Cornishclio · 08/06/2021 21:56

I aim for 1400 each day but am trying to lose around 8 lb. I have a BMI of 26 so slightly overweight. I reckon to maintain I have to stick to around 1800-2000 but I am fairly active exercising most days.

PeachMelba78 · 08/06/2021 21:58

I’m 5.1, 8.2 stone and small build/bone structure. I’ve been eating 1000 calories to drop a few pounds (about there now) and I won’t up it too much. Calorie intake is more than just male/female. It needs to take into account your age, exercise, height, weight etc. There’s no way I could eat 2000 and not gain weight, I have a very sedentary lifestyle which coupled with my stats means I have to be very careful as I’ve got older.

ramabanana · 08/06/2021 22:05

5'4 and went from 68 to 58 kg in the last 8 or so months on around 1200 most days (I'm working from home and very inactive)

When I keep to this I don't feel the need to restrict if invited to eat out or getting takeaways every couple of weeks which would suck, so it feels like a lifestyle change more than an actual diet

Carbs themselves aren't the devil (unless you're going full keto) but if you aim to get as much protein and veg in as possible within your calories you inevitably end up on a 'low carb' diet without having to feel guilty about a bread roll every now and again

Chicken + veg stir fry and cheese omelettes with baked beans have been good to me

@blaisealex

Out of my 1000kcals a day, I reserve 200 kcals for drinks which leaves me 800 for food and I try and save 200 for a snack/treat. So, at the moment, I'm having 100 kcals at Lunch time and then 400-500 on dinner.
It's not healthy at all to eat that little. Your body needs at least 1500 approximately just to function, that's without moving. You could eat 1500 a day, move more and lose loads.

That's exactly what I'm doing. I eat 1500-1600 per day and I've lost 5lb in the first week.

Why suffer when you can eat more and still lose.

Today I had a big sushi pack from Tesco, a tub of pineapple, 2 packs of walkers, one banana and 2 fajitas with cheese and I don't feel hungry at all.

@roarfeckingroarr

About 3,000. I have a BMI of 20.5 and v fortunate genes.
How in the hell?? Are you 7ft tall?
lastqueenofscotland · 08/06/2021 22:24

I’m 5’7” and fairly slim. Hover somewhere in the 9st bracket.
I eat about 1500-1800 calories 6 days a week and have a fat day once a week.

Cocomarine · 08/06/2021 22:28

5ft 3”
118 lb (8st 6lb)
BMI 21
Age 46
Swim 6 days a week, average 30 lengths a session - not hardcore pace, but active.

The TDEE calculator is bollocks for me. Says 1700, but I gain on more than 1000-1200.

That’s age for you!

At least that’s not relevant to your age 🙂

It’s great that you’ve made a start 👍🏻 With your stats though, I would aim to lose more than a stone before TTC. A lot of people (whatever weight) get pregnant quickly and it’s unlikely you’ll lose during pregnancy - though you can safely do so with support. It will be far easier, and better for you, to do it pre-pregnancy.

Good luck!

I’m currently 12stone. 5ft 9ins, think BMI is 24-25, size 12. I lift heavy weights, do yoga, and make sure I get my 10k steps in each day.

Trying to lose a bit of weight, I’m on 1500 weekdays and 2000 weekends, averaging out at around 1600/day.

Within this I have a protein shake with a banana blended in, a bowl of porridge or weetabix, a 500kcal lunch and 500kcal dinner, plus some fruit. I get at least 100g protein per day and plenty of veggies for lunch and dinner.

I could maintain at about 2200 at 12 stones. I imagine it will be about 1900-2000 at 11stone - goal weight.

lljkk · 08/06/2021 22:38

63 kg, 53yo.
My weight is stable. Fitbit says I burn about 2250/d
I seem to burn About 600 kcal/d in exercise.

Ellieboolou33 · 08/06/2021 22:38

Currently on 800 a day to shift weight fast, 2 meal replacements and a 400 calorie dinner which includes lots of veg and some protein.

It is not "bad" to have so few calories to lose weight, as long as it's not longer than 8-12 weeks. As long as you are getting your vitamins & minerals and drinking plenty of water it's fine.

300-400 calories on drinks / snacks is a lot and you'd be better off having a larger lunch, smaller dinner and limit the treats / drinks to 100-200.

Good luck

Goatinthegarden · 08/06/2021 22:44

I’m 5’6, 34 and weigh exactly 10st.

I eat about 1400-1800 cals a day. More on weekends. I try not to count too much as I don’t want to live my life based on calorie consumption, but I do try and pay attention to my snack sizes and choices. I love food and I would easily eat FAR more than I do day to day. I am very active; I’m on my feet all day at work, bike or walk the 15km round commute and walk/hike longer distances at the weekends. I also run a bit.

If I cut down the exercise for a even a short time, my weight starts creeping up pretty fast on the amount of calories I consume.

MrsJBaptiste · 08/06/2021 22:44

I'm 45, 5' 8, weigh 10st 13 and exercise 5 times a week (gym & running)

My TDEE is around 2200 calories so I aim for 1500 a day as I'd likevto try and lose a few pounds (10st 10 would be fine for me).

Some days I eat a few less and at the weekends a few more but I find this works for me at the moment. My God though, its harder to lose weight when you hit your mid 30's and when you get to your 40's... 😣

PrinnyPree · 08/06/2021 22:45

I'm 5'5 10st6 and 38 years old, I maintain on 2000 but get about 10k steps a day. I found 1600 was a comfortable level to lose on long term whilst doing strength training too. 1000 sounds incredibly low to maintain long term, I struggled on 1200 (in a bid to lose as quickly as possible) before settling on 1600, do you weigh and measure everything including condiments, butter on your bread and milk in your tea?

I do know that some doctors do put people with high BMIs on very low calorie diets though so I don't believe it will cause too much damage if you are being monitored by a professional and you don't suffer from an eating disorder. X

ChunkyMonkey2020 · 08/06/2021 22:47

I'm losing weight on 2000 calories.

I'm 42.8lbs down since middle of feb.

I do have a lot to lose though.

Check the James Smith macro calculator. Will give you a good indication on what amount of calories you can lose on.

Ozanj · 08/06/2021 22:50

I maintain my healthy weight on 1800-2100 calories per day. I do this by eating whole foods where possible and filling half my plate with veggies, walking 10-20k steps per day in one go, and focussing on muscle building activities.

Ozanj · 08/06/2021 22:52

Should also point out OP that you are do heavy you could probably lose weight on 2000 cals per day without exercise. Then once you get to a stable weight you could then add exercise in and lose even more.

Lesssaideasymended · 08/06/2021 22:53

This should help you work out how much needed to maintain etc. Hope it helps

1200 currently as dieting
Maintain for me is around 1700
I’m 57

ThuggeryAffair · 08/06/2021 23:05

I'm 48 and I eat around 1800 to 2100 per day with a BMI of about 20, but I walk about 3 to 8 miles a day which burns a few hundred calories. I'm 5 ft 8 and weigh 9 stone 7.

Ozanj · 08/06/2021 23:06

@Poppetgems

My bmi is 19 and to maintain it I can’t eat more than 800 calories a day. I’m late 30s.
Are you weighing every morsel that passes through your mouth? If not then you definitely aren’t estimating it correctly. I have middle aged, inactive family who are around the 4 ft mark and even they maintain a bmi 18-19 on 1-1.1k a day mark.

That's amazing! Well done to you
CurryLover55 · 08/06/2021 23:07

Absolutely no idea! However, I do know that I get way too many calories from alcohol. That needs to change.

CornishGem1975 · 08/06/2021 23:09

You need to use a TDEE calculator which will work out your personal maintenance calories. Deduct 500 from that to lose weight.

1000 is not enough for your BMI.

I am on 1200 a day to lose weight. I am 9st 3lb, BMI is in the green but at the higher end. At around 1700 a day I should maintain.

PickAChew · 08/06/2021 23:10

Average 1900

51 and 5'4 (maybe shorter, these days) with bmi around 24.
