How many calories do you eat?

How many calories a day do you eat?

How old are you and what is your height and weight?

I'm 25 with a BMI of 37 at 15st 7. I was consuming at a guess 3000+ a day.
Currently dieting with calorie counting and reducing intake.

I'm having around 1000 calories a day now but really, I'm wondering, once I get to a weight I'm happy with, how many calories I should then be having to maintain.

So it would be interesting to hear how many calories people have daily.

I'm 5 8 and currently weigh a fraction over 10 stone. Since March I have very gradually lost a stone via tracking. I've always done a lot of exercise but it turns out I was just eating far too big portions and weight was creeping on. I used my fitness pal religiously for about 4 weeks and tracked everything. I weighed out "big stuff" like pasta and potatoes but other than that, didn't weigh stuff. I now vaguely track but not to the same extent at all as I now have a better idea of what a suitable portion size looks like for me. I have around 1550-1700 a day (give or take). I do exercise almost every day, and tend to at least go for a walk on days when I don't go to the gym (which is about 1 day a week)

@Loubilou09 it really isn’t bothering me, I was just replying to your post where you told off someone else who challenged you on whether it was necessary or not. I have no interest in your weight loss , just dispelling of inaccurate information.

This is a discussion forum.

Why are you so defensive about it?

I didn’t challenge her - I told her that I didn’t find it joyless and I said it was necessary “for me”

Not in the slightest bit defensive just intrigued why people want to put down or challenge my method that’s working “for me” (as well as the thousands of people doing team RH).

There’s literally no point in either of you wasting your breath trying to somehow prove me wrong Wink

TheFuckingDogs · 10/06/2021 07:57

Maintenance 1400-500, slow but steady weight loss 1200.

YellowMonday · 10/06/2021 08:05

I have no idea as I follow IF 16/8, and am successfully losing weight. I eat in the mediterranean diet style - low carbs, grains and red meat, lots of veggies, fish, heathy fats, low GI fruits. Drink 3 litres of water.

First time I've ever attempted to lose weight without CICO, and I can't believe how well it is working for me - down 20 kilos (3 stone) since late February this year.

I think I've learnt that every body has a different body; my seems to respond to fasting and how I'm currently eating.

BasinHaircut · 10/06/2021 08:19

@Loubilou09 I am categorically not trying to put you down.

You keep doing you. The most important thing is that everyone who wants to lose fat is that they find a method that works for them and they can stick to. I don’t know anything about team RH apart from they like to slag off slimming world, and only anecdotally as I’ve never really looked into it.

Good luck with your weight loss.

PurpleDaisies · 10/06/2021 08:23

I’m not knocking calorie counting as a method in general. Weighing slices of bread when the packet tells you what they are is a step too far in my view. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion obviously but when you’re telling other people to start weighing their bread just in case it’s slightly different from what it’s supposed to be, that’s where I think it needs to be discussed.

Why does it need to be discussed? If there person doing it is happy with it? I told the OP to visit Team RH where they advocate this method as often the packaging can be "significantly" out, whether she chooses to sign up to Team RH is up to her, all I told her is what worked "for me". There are literally hundreds of stories on the Team RH page where a packaged pizza might say such and such per so many gramms and the difference in weight mean't the item could be as much as 200 calories difference. You are allowed a fairly generous daily calorie allowance so need to be getting it as accurate as you can.

If you don't want to do it, don't....it really is as simple as that, but telling people what they should and shouldn't be doing isn't your place. Who gave you the job of thread monitoring and deciding what people were doing was right or wrong?

As I have said many times, its working "for me", and it's working for a lot of people following Team RH, at no point have I told the OP she must do it, so no I am not telling people what to do, all I have said is what has worked "for me" and how tracking is key to it, the only person telling people what they should and shouldn't be doing is you ironically.

PurpleDaisies · 10/06/2021 08:36

You literally said “best thing to do is...” followed by your advice to start weighing bread slices.
It is a discussion forum. People are allowed to disagree with you.

PurpleDaisies · 10/06/2021 08:37

And I am not trying to put you down. You’re taking this very personally. Confused

I'm really not.

It's working for me, I am absolutely delighted with my weight loss and very grateful I have found something that is working for me after many years of trying. At over 60, losing weight is hard.

Can I suggest that if you really want to keep disagreeing with the method, you take it up with Team RH rather than keep badgering me?

They have a FB page and a web page, you should be able to contact them through that to talk about their methods - good luck Smile x

PurpleDaisies · 10/06/2021 08:56

I’m not badgering you. I am replying to you posts about what I have written.

In the name of science I weighed my bread this morning before toasting it. It is a whole 1.2g heavier (ignoring the difference in precision in my scales) than the pack says. That equates to 3 extra calories. I had better go for a run.

The thing I like about team RH is it usually give people really sensible calorie limits. The difference between a pack average weight and the real weight of a particular food item is really not going to be significant in the context of a whole days/weeks calories, especially given the potential inaccuracies of stated calorie counts.

@TheFuckingDogs I hope I'm not being rude, genuinely curious, are you really slim or short? I'm trying to lose weight at the moment and when I do hope to keep it off for good but the idea that to maintain I'd have to eat 1400 calories a day forever fills me with dread tbh :/

That's one example, there can be some significant differences, but sometimes the packaging is right which is great! no one is saying all the packaging is wrong. Just because you didn't find one today means nothing.

You can keep being facetious or you can just move on with your life and carry on doing what suits you and makes you happy, that's what I am going to do Smile

Again, if you really want to keep arguing the method, then you'd be best to go to Team RH directly.

WeeFae · 10/06/2021 10:49

About 700 but Ive had WLS

PurpleDaisies · 10/06/2021 10:53

I am not being facetious. People should be aware of the scale of the differences you’re likely to find verses the effort of weighing things you can easily look at the calories for. My 36g bag of crisps weighs 34g. That saves me a massive 7 calories.

purplesequins · 10/06/2021 10:57

I think it is useful to weigh food and calculate calories from time to time.
some foods contain a surprising amount of calories and proposed portion sizes are not always what we think we should eat.

Definitely-I weigh pasta and rice every time I cook them because it’s so hard to guess a sensible portion when pouring them out. Cereal often surprises me too.
JustDanceAddict · 10/06/2021 11:02

I am 163cm, around 8st10 (small build)
I burn around 1500-1600 cals per day
I lose weight on eating around 1300 which is close to bmr.
ideal weight is around 8st7 - I carry most excess weight round my middle so losing 3lbs makes a big difference. I’m a size 12 on average.

vivainsomnia · 10/06/2021 11:09

Very similar to above. In my 50s, 5'2'', 8 stones 10-12. I burn about 1500 calories a day if I do nothing. I average about 2000-2200 at the moment with a lot of exercise. I'd like to eat about 1800 calories a day but I expect it's more like 2000 hence not losing weight! I have however changed my diet, given up bread, pasta and rice and increased proteins. I think I get away with more calories this way.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 10/06/2021 11:40

I thought this was a myth that had been debunked?

Yes it has. Eating very low calories or fasting is fine, but:

  • if you have health conditions it's best to check with your GP first
  • As with any reduction of food, making long term diet and lifestyle changes will ultimately keep the weight off
  • WHAT you eat is absolutely critical, it's not just about any old 800-1000 calories. If you eat that in carbs only it's unlikely to keep you going and you will quickly fail. Measured full fat dairy, oil, nuts, fish, tofu, meat if you eat it with loads of cruciferous/green veg and a small amount of high fibre, non-ultra-processed carbs - lentils, rye bread etc will keep you satisfied and long term a Mediterranean diet is recommended

HarebrightCedarmoon · 10/06/2021 11:42

Also the very low calorie bit is usually for a limited period of up to 12 weeks though it can be extended on advice from a GP.

Bourbonic · 10/06/2021 13:20

My BMR is around 1700. I tend to use all the calories I burn through exercise too. I typically aim for 120-150g protein per day and will sometimes have a protein shake to supplement that.

What on earth are you eating for lunch to only have 100cals? You're basically having one meal a day, which is fine, but not at 500cals as your body will be starved of nutrients.

1000cals really is too low for most people as a base rate.

VapeVamp12 · 10/06/2021 14:12

I'm 35 and currently losing weight.
I started at 18 stone 7 and I'm currently 14 stone 12.
I lose better at around 1650 a day but will go up to 1800 a day a couple of times a week.

I'm 5'6

winched · 10/06/2021 14:27

5'3, 8st 4, size 8. It depends really, some days 800 some days closer 1800. I tend to maintain that way. If I need to lose then I'll shoot for more days in the 800-1000 range. High fat / low carb. Desk job.
