How much to pay?

For a first birthday cake? My younger cousin is making it, she's fab but really doesn't know how much to charge me, I want to pay her a proper price as she's struggling for money but I know she feels awkward asking for money over and above ingredients!

I've attached a picture of the style I've asked for

I make cakes for friends at cost, this should cost around £25 x

DulseSeaweed · 08/06/2021 19:45

Why not get her to give you a receipt for ingredients and ask how many hours it took then give her a reasonable hourly rate?

Not a cake maker but for a custom cake here in Northern Ireland I usually pay around £40. It's really cheap up here though!

ChocOrange1 · 08/06/2021 19:45

Could she work out how much the ingredients will cost, and how many hours it will take to make. Do the hours x minimum wage, plus ingredient cost and then round it up to a round number.

MaybeCrazy2 · 08/06/2021 19:47

People just don’t want to pay the time it takes to hand make them, that’s why I stopped bothering.

You probably would need to charge around £55 to get a decent hourly rate. People want to buy them for £30 though.

motogogo · 08/06/2021 19:48

Just ordered a simple design round cake for £42

An0n0n0n · 08/06/2021 19:51

I recently paid £65 for one with lpads of fancy fondant so id expect to pay around £50 for that, gice or take £10 depending in her skill amd what your local market rate would be.

Moonshine11 · 08/06/2021 19:53

Would pay £50ish

AddisonMontgomeryShepherd · 08/06/2021 19:54

I'm amazed at the person who said £25!
I reckon at least £50.
I've just paid £65 for a one tier round cake with similar design.

parietal · 08/06/2021 20:08

£50 plus.

It is the hours of work that go into it that costs, not just the cake ingredients

iusedtohavechickens · 08/06/2021 20:10

Sorry I should have been clear and said £25 to make at cost, I did one recently for my friend and that's how much it came to, I only charge for ingredients and board ect nothing for my time xx

AGirlsGotToDo · 08/06/2021 20:10

£40 I reckon.

batataharra · 08/06/2021 20:12

I’ve had similar cakes made over the years and that would be £50-£60 (London). Have a look online - it would be a similar price, I think.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 08/06/2021 20:17

£60 minimum

Sexnotgender · 08/06/2021 20:20

I’d expect to pay at least £50 for that. More like £60/70 though possibly depending on size.

Merryoldgoat · 08/06/2021 20:21

That’s a simple cake - if you want to pay ‘proper’ price then something in the £50 range.

I could decorate that in about an 90 mins. Another hour to make. £20 ish for ingredients so that’s around £25-£30 profit.

TwoLeftElbows · 08/06/2021 20:24

A friend of mine has a simple "no-frills" cake business and I think she'd charge £35-40, not including any costs of a shaped tin. Our local cake decorating shop hires out the tins for £2-3.

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/06/2021 20:49

I made a birthday cake for a friend recently - the (good quality) baking ingredients cost almost £20 alone. If I hadn’t had a cake board and a variety of food dyes in the cupboard already, it would have been closer to £30. That’s before you even begin calculating time spent.

For something like the photo you posted, most local bakeries / small-time professionals in my area start at £60. I’d feel embarrassed to offer a financially struggling friend anything below that, tbh.

ChompStompRoar · 08/06/2021 20:52

I’d expect to pay £50-60 for the cake in your photo

amylou8 · 08/06/2021 20:55

I'd expect to pay £40-50 for that

Beach11 · 08/06/2021 20:58

£65

Treezan82 · 08/06/2021 21:05

That would be £60-70 round here!

Tina221 · 08/06/2021 21:10

I'd expect to pay £65

queennotififi · 08/06/2021 21:26

I'd expect to pay £60 near London.

Wrotten · 08/06/2021 21:31

£60

Applesarenice · 08/06/2021 21:36

At least £50. It will take her a good 3-4 hours at least plus ingredients
