How much to pay?

For a first birthday cake? My younger cousin is making it, she's fab but really doesn't know how much to charge me, I want to pay her a proper price as she's struggling for money but I know she feels awkward asking for money over and above ingredients!

I've attached a picture of the style I've asked for

All of my cakes start at £50, some go as high as £90. This I would charge at £60 as I hate fondant.

XiCi · 08/06/2021 21:39

£50-£60

TheChosenTwo · 08/06/2021 21:41

About £60 for the one in the photo. That would be the going rate round here.
I make my own for the dc, they don’t look professional Grin but they are always a good talking (laughing) point!

TwoBlueFish · 08/06/2021 21:43

I paid £45 earlier this year for this one.

£40-£50

Beautiful3 · 08/06/2021 22:04

I'd think £40 because its family, and partly a gift. If it were a friend I'd asked, then £55.

MrsMiddleMother · 08/06/2021 22:14

I'd say £50

PegasusReturns · 08/06/2021 22:31

Depends where you are. Similar near me in London would be £90-120.

KarmaStar · 08/06/2021 22:34

£55.but I would ask her if she wanted a flat fee of £60 or cost of ingredients, time ,plus costs (travel to shops ,oven running costs).if she can't decide you choose.

SwimBaby · 08/06/2021 22:34

£50 for mates rates.

User135792468 · 08/06/2021 22:35

£60

BlueDucky · 08/06/2021 22:38

@ChocOrange1

Could she work out how much the ingredients will cost, and how many hours it will take to make. Do the hours x minimum wage, plus ingredient cost and then round it up to a round number.
I'd do this but not minimum wage
Ughmaybenot · 08/06/2021 22:42

£50 ish? Last thing I’d want to do is make her feel her time and efforts weren’t worth anything, so I’d need to do some more market research!

HelpMeh · 08/06/2021 22:43

I couldn't be arsed making cakes for minimum wage! Bloody hell.

She needs to cost ingredients and then add on whatever her hourly rate is.

Mates rates are an open door to a lifetime of piss takers so she should just charge her normal fees. If she's good then she's worth paying for.

I don't know how much I'd expect to pay for that as I don't really buy cakes. Probably upwards of £50.

LadyLolaRuben · 08/06/2021 22:50

I've bought a few recently. No less than £50 and up to £70 depending on time spent. Ask her how much ingredients cost and how many hours she spent making it. Then work out a decent hourly rate with a bit extra as a tip if your that way inclined

youvegottenminuteslynn · 08/06/2021 23:05

£60ish mate's rates around here (SE).

It's tempting for people to massively undervalue handmade goods - but think of the cost of ingredients (or materials if not food), then think how many hours it's likely to take and how much per hour you think is a fair amount - so minimum wage at an absolute minimum. Add more for skill level, quality etc. It soon adds up to more than people think!

babyt2020 · 09/06/2021 09:07

Great thankyou, I offered her £40 and she's very happy with that
