If you have a sibling with ASD

If you have a sibling with ASD, have any of your own children been diagnosed with ASD?

Was reading the results of this study www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/autism-risk-estimated-3-5-children-whose-parents-have-sibling-autism and interested to know other people's experiences.

I have a sibling with ASD and have two small children, neither have any ASD symptoms.

No. None of my children have.

Purplesunflowers · 07/06/2021 20:28

My brother has ASD - neither of my children (aged 9 & 7 - both girls) do. Thank you for sharing the study, it is interesting to read. I remember trying to find statistics for the likelihood of this when I was TTC & couldn’t find anything conclusive.

AntiSocialDistancer · 07/06/2021 20:32

I have a sibling who I strongly suspect has ASD and a child with it.

gingganggooleywotsit · 07/06/2021 20:37

My brother has it and my teen dd displays symptoms at times. Watching and waiting.

Cam2020 · 07/06/2021 20:38

I have a sibling with quite severe autism, my daughter hasn't. I was forever looking out for signs when she was a baby.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 07/06/2021 20:38

My ASD child is just like my brother and my uncle but neither of them have been diognosed.

daretodenim · 07/06/2021 20:43

My OH does as does (undiagnosed due to age and geographical location but lots of signs) his father, paternal aunt, mother's 2 cousins. OH's siblings don't have it. Their children don't either. Neither do our children.

Dreamnewjob · 07/06/2021 20:45

My sister has ASD, as do my husband and child.

Aroundthelight · 07/06/2021 20:47

Really interesting hearing everyone's experiences.

@Purplesunflowers exactly the same for me, I kept looking for a study like this before I was pregnant and couldn't find anything.

@Cam2020 I've done the same with my DC

Several of my family are in deep denial and refusing assessment for themselves and their DC.

That’s the weakness of research that tries to trace heredity. You would have to assess all family members - with their cooperation- to trace the patterns accurately.

My sis has ADHD, my cousin and I have ASD. My other cousin is NT. We suspect my 3rd cousin had ASD also but she died young do no diagnosis.
We are all “high functioning” in that we have jobs, homes, relationships, etc..

My niece has ASD, ADHD, Tourette’s and other issues. My nephew has ADHD. My DD seems reasonably normal but is dyslexic like her Dad. My normal cousins kid is normal. My ASD cousin has no kids.

We assume my dad has ADHD but he has no formal diagnosis.

Basically we are a family of oddities. We live with our various issues and have found happy lives. I’m divorced but my new boyfriend is lovely and he is odd too (ADHD I think!)

bookworm14 · 07/06/2021 20:59

I have a sibling with Down’s syndrome and autism. I was hyper-alert for autism signs in my DD but so far (aged 5) she isn’t showing any traits.

KitKat1985 · 07/06/2021 21:01

My brother is autistic and my eldest daughter is autistic.

Newnamefor2021 · 07/06/2021 21:08

My husbands brother has ASD as do two of my children. My husband has traits but not diagnosed.

DecorChange · 07/06/2021 21:12

Both my brothers are autistic. One "better" than the other. Think my dad was too. My dd Is on the ndas waiting list and has adhd. My ds 1 has traits going through speech therapy atm. Ds 2 is fine so far. When I found I was having a girl i was soo happy because I figured she would get away with it.

Sillyotter · 07/06/2021 21:15

My brother has a mild form of ASD. I don’t have kids of my own but both my parents suspect it runs on my dads side as after they learned loads about it during my brother’s diagnosis (over 20 years ago) they realised several adults on my dads side had traits. However they’ve never been tested or diagnosed because it just wasnt that well known back then. It’s never been mentioned and my parents always felt too awkward to bring it up. But they’ve definitely suspected it runs in my dads side for a long time so it’s nice to see it’s being studied

Hermanfromguesswho · 07/06/2021 21:15

I have a sibling with adhd and autism. Out of my 3 children I have one with autism snd one with adhd/autism

HappyDays40 · 07/06/2021 21:15

I work with children with ASD. So many of the dads say they aren't sure who their could have inherited it from and mums roll their eyes at me coz they know!

stargirl1701 · 07/06/2021 21:22

My brother has struggled for his entire life. He still lives with Dad and he is now in his forties. No diagnosis was ever sought by parents.

My DD1 was diagnosed at 6.

PickAChew · 07/06/2021 21:27

Yes.

Both mine and my sister's DC are autistic.

Uncle and grandfather almost definitely were, too.

NannyAndJohn · 07/06/2021 21:27

DB has it.

Was worried for my DC but thankfully they've turned out ok.

baldafrique · 07/06/2021 21:29

1 in 20 chance is still really low

RickiTarr · 07/06/2021 21:30

1 in 20 chance is still really low
Way too low.

My brother is the same age. He saw a string of psychologists at school (mostly because he was the naughty kid, so got people's attention) but there was no diagnosis to be had for anyone with anything other than severe kanner type autism, back in the 80s and early 90s.
Merryoldgoat · 07/06/2021 21:34

My older son with ASD is apparently just like my BIL was as a child. BIL suspects he’s on the autistic spectrum but has decided not to seek adult diagnosis.

My younger also has autism but with significantly more complex needs.

DH definitely doesn’t have Autism.
