And say something like' you are the live of my life, i will always be by your side, you are the one and only' etvetc

It's not a vow! A vow is a solemn promise.
The above is a declaration...ot is not promising anything.

Am watching Leonard and penny get married in big bang and it is driving me mad!

okay so firstly YABU because big bang theory is terrible. Secondly, you know the whole show is made up, right?

finally, how is "I will always be by your side" not a promise?

VettiyaIruken · 06/06/2021 14:59

Yup.

And why do films and TV shows feature that noisy slurpy moaning kissing, the slooooow lean in, the raspy whispering ? Has anyone, ever, in real life done that? (Seriously, not in a taking the piss way)

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 07/06/2021 12:04

And the getting out of bed and wrapping a sheet around themselves

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 07/06/2021 12:09

It is in tv land

YES! I hate it so cringey.

AramintaLee · 07/06/2021 12:21

I was watching a film series with my DP last week and we noticed how the characters all seem to talk to each other nose to nose. We tried to do it for the rest of the evening and always ended up cracking up. It's just not natural to talk to each other with your faces one inch apart and yet they all do it like it's the only way to talk to a person.

Confusedandshaken · 07/06/2021 12:23

I've been to weddings where they wrote their own vows, never church ones, always civil ceremonies. It's simultaneously moving and cringy.

Minesril · 07/06/2021 12:23

Cringy yes...apart from the bit in Scrubs when Carla's brother tricks him into saying the line from ' when harry met Sally' as his vowsGrin

Minesril · 07/06/2021 12:24

Tricks Turk that should say!

ItsAllOrangeAndYellow · 07/06/2021 12:25

We wrote our own vows for our wedding but that was because the book of vows to choose from were awful! We basically googled wedding vows and picked out bits we liked and felt applied to us as a couple. It was a civil ceremony so no religious determinations about what we had or didn't have to say. Also we didn't announce that we'd written our own vows, we just said them.

the80sweregreat · 07/06/2021 12:26

When they make films these days they will have to have them 2m apart ( if it's a modern day film) !
Like the soaps have had to do!

DaphneMoonsSeattle · 07/06/2021 12:26

I hate the trope - started by Friends I believe - of having a friend get ordained and perform the ceremony. Big Bang being the worst offender for having four or more officiants to marry two people.

Also, I like to think that it's mainly only people on sitcoms who propose in front of the friends and/or family. Talk about putting someone under pressure!

In Friends after Ross said the wrong name why did Emily go ahead with signing the licence?!! I get her going through with the ceremony due to shock and not knowing quite what to do so going ahead with that but she must have then signed the licence for them to be married and subsequently divorced. That or they did the signing first, which wouldn't be the usual way of doing things at all.

SpindleWhorl · 07/06/2021 12:34

Meghan and Harry wrote their own vows, didn't they? And the Arch Bish said they couldn't say them in Windsor Chapel but that he'd pop round Thurday so that they could say them in the garden in private.

I think the Arch Bish took one for team there.

SquirrelFan · 07/06/2021 12:58

@ItsAllOrangeAndYellow We had to do this, too--nothing in the book sounded wedding-y enough! So we cobbled together something that sounded legit. (no obey, though)

Mummytomylittlegirl · 07/06/2021 13:03

I think it’s an American thing. I haven’t been to a wedding where anyone has done this!

I would find it so cringe. I wanted to get the ceremony out of the way as quickly as possible to be honest!

MaMelon · 07/06/2021 13:09

I don’t know - Dawn and Pete’s in Gavin and Stacey were pretty monumental Grin

They are generally cringed and toe curling, but I went to a humanist wedding a while back and it was actually really nice - the couple were into mountaineering and their vows talked about belaying each other through life which was quite sweet.

Wafflehouse · 07/06/2021 13:14

Ah, MaMelon beat me to it. I was going to say Pete and Dawn’s are the only acceptable example of writing your own vows.

Fyredraca · 07/06/2021 13:15

Just watched Monica and Chandler's wedding and I totally agree.
Although the bit where they almost had a Greek Orthodox ceremony was funny

Fyredraca · 07/06/2021 13:16

I hate Chandler's soppy voice when he's being lovey dovey

PollyPepper · 07/06/2021 13:19

Omg me too!! He's a great actor when it comes to the sarky, dry wit, but ugh when he tries to do sincere it's like he can't act at all! The proposal scene springs to mind shudder

@OP - we wrote our vows but they all began with 'I vow to...' is that okay??

PollyPepper · 07/06/2021 13:20

'Lights will g-u-u-i-i-de you home, and ign-i-i-ii-te your bones' 🤣🤣🤣
Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 07/06/2021 13:26

😂😂😂😂😂 at dawn and pete....
Pete, most people would turn you away....😂

We wrote our own vows (civil ceremony), although there are some legal parts you have to include. It is a bit cringy I suppose, but it meant a lot to us.

Quite a few people told me after the ceremony that we'd made them cry, perhaps it wasn't because they were so moved by our love as I thought at the time Grin

LizziesTwin · 07/06/2021 13:36

My brother & his wife wrote their own vows for a register office wedding. They made some very specific promises.
