And say something like' you are the live of my life, i will always be by your side, you are the one and only' etvetc

It's not a vow! A vow is a solemn promise.
The above is a declaration...ot is not promising anything.

Am watching Leonard and penny get married in big bang and it is driving me mad!

@Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow

😂😂😂😂😂 at dawn and pete.... Pete, most people would turn you away....😂
And Pete's ring was superb, of course.
Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 07/06/2021 13:37

But did you actually promise something? I have no problem with vows that actual vows...

We had a humanist ceremony and were asked if we wanted to write our own vows. We just went with one of the options the celebrant had though as we couldn't be arsed to add something else to our list of things to do. Grin

I find it bizarre that post-covid productions with social distancing are more realistic than pre-covid productions where every conversation is held at a face-to-face distance of two inches.

Personal vows are generally a bit cringey, but those on television are invariably vomit-inducing.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 07/06/2021 14:16

The social distancing on call the midwife has been cray cray though! Poor Lucille and Cyril have got engaged without ever standing together or holding hands or anything!

Yes! Especially when the whole episode before the wedding is worrying about what to say in your vows.

Just do the traditional repeat what the vicar says vows and then there's no need to worry.

MaMelon · 07/06/2021 14:33

P....D....P....D Grin. Priceless!!

lazylinguist · 07/06/2021 15:32

I'm not a big fan of the idea tbh - too cringe. But to be fair, I don't see why your example "I will always be by your side" doesn't count as a promise/vow.

PotassiumChloride · 07/06/2021 15:34

I went to a wedding where the couple wrote their own vows and whilst I love them both, it was cringe-central from start to finish. The wedding was a blast though.

ZaraW · 07/06/2021 15:37

YABU and taking it a bit too seriously.

APJ1 · 07/06/2021 16:25

I hate Chandler's soppy voice when he's being lovey dovey

Same, and when he's talking to their twins in the last episode. "Your first hoooome".

allfurcoatnoknickers · 07/06/2021 16:50

I live in the US and am married to an American and I think most people here write their own vows. We did our own when we got married 7 years ago - I promised DH he'd never be bored Grin.

Namechangedlady · 07/06/2021 16:52

@Mummytomylittlegirl

I think it’s an American thing. I haven’t been to a wedding where anyone has done this!

I would find it so cringe. I wanted to get the ceremony out of the way as quickly as possible to be honest!

I have! But they got divorced after 6 months
orlaquiver · 07/06/2021 18:24

I remember hearing that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston wrote their own vows. He promised to set the thermostat one degree higher and she promised to set it one degree lower.
Quite sweet but I guess it didn't make that much difference in the long term....

I remember going to the wedding of a very old money couple who both simultaneously burst out laughing when it came to the 'for poorer' part of the vows, it was like they couldn't think of anything more ridiculous than the prospect of being poor. I guess everything is hilarious when you you inherit are metric ton of cash!

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 07/06/2021 22:23

Not the kind of deep abiding promise that sees you through the hard times though is it?

I keep giggling to myself thinking of pete and dawn

I'm still waiting for the 'richer 'bit. Had lots of poor.
