Giving DD8 a day off for an exhibit

Beachtrip · 03/06/2021 19:49

Next week I have tickets to an exhibition that DD would love, I was supposed to be going with a friend but they can't make it.
It's not educational, it's a fun thing.
I'm considering giving her one day off school, to spend with me. We almost never get any time just me and her as I'm a single mum with two kids and virtually no one near by to help out.

Wibu to do this?

I feel that on the one hand, they have missed masses of school over the last year, but on the other, she's bored at school right now because she did all the work during lockdown and they are still recapping now.

Opinions please!

For one day I would

AprilAzpilicueta · 03/06/2021 19:51

Do it

pitterpatterrain · 03/06/2021 19:52

Go for it

OhMyMirror · 03/06/2021 19:52

I'd take her. It's one day, and given how much they've missed over the past year I dont think it'll have much of an impact on her education. Out of curiosity, what is the exhibit?

heather2908 · 03/06/2021 19:53

I’m a teacher and I’d take her out. Real life experiences are priceless.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 03/06/2021 19:56

How old is she

KaleSlayer · 03/06/2021 19:56

She’s 8, you’re her mum, just do it. Why even ask? 🤷🏻‍♀️

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 03/06/2021 19:57

Oh I see she's 8. Yeah I would.

Wilkolampshade · 03/06/2021 20:22

Yep, I would.

Wigeon · 03/06/2021 20:28

I would try to move the tickets to the weekend, when you can take DD. There are loads and loads of things you could potentially do during the school day with your kids. However, you have around 180 days a year when they aren’t at school - use one of those days instead of a school day.

cupsofcoffee · 03/06/2021 20:31

God, do it!

She's 8. It's really no big deal.

Beachtrip · 03/06/2021 20:34

It's Alice in Wonderland exhibit.

I can't move the ticket. It was booked in 2019 and postponed twice due to Covid!!

Thanks for opinion, I'm gonna take her. How exciting!

Have a good time, I also think this is a great opportunity for your DD.

georgarina · 03/06/2021 20:39

Have fun with your DD OP x

Rumplestrumpet · 03/06/2021 20:39

Do it! I recently had a day out with my 6 yr old daughter, took her out of school for the day and we did an exhibition and lunch in a restaurant. It was such a treat - we never get time just the two of us, and we giggled and laughed (and she was ungrateful at times - it wasn't perfect!). It was well worth it and I would do it again in a flash.

She'll remember it for a long time, go for it

MsMarple · 03/06/2021 20:41

The one at the V&A? That looks amazing and definitely full of educational things! Just take her: it will be so special for her to have a day with just the two of you.

Nectarines · 03/06/2021 20:44

I would take her. However I would be honest with school about reason for absence rather than feigning illness or anything.

Have a lovely time.

Tonkerbea · 03/06/2021 20:44

Do it, and have the BEST day with her.

Wolfiefan · 03/06/2021 20:45

There’s no way that can’t be educational OP. Do it!

ACupOfTeaSolvesEverything · 03/06/2021 21:14

Absolutely. Education is broader than the national curriculum. Have a lovely time xx

DonkeysNotDisney · 03/06/2021 21:16

Holy fuck, a missing school post full of rational people! Op hope you enjoy

Fauvist · 03/06/2021 21:20

Of course that is educational! Do it.

cocoloco987 · 03/06/2021 21:21

Surely any exhibit is educational? Take her 100%

Womencanlift · 03/06/2021 21:21

I would do it OP.... however it is very interesting how threads with similar questions on here have very different outcomes.

There was one a couple of months back, similar age child and the vitriol that the poster got on that thread for even thinking of taking their child out for the day was shocking. Apparently that one day was going to ruin their whole education Hmm. The small number of us who supported that poster were jumped on too

cocoloco987 · 03/06/2021 21:23

@Womencanlift are you talking about the one where the school refusing dc was to be given a day off as a treat for his birthday? Very circumstances I'd say!
