Using God/Christ in negative threads

Tigertalk · 30/05/2021 09:00

Hi all, I’m a long time mumsnetter but finding it hard to read constant threads (as a Christian) that use phrases starting with ‘ for G*d’s sake ( insert some nasty phrase about something) . We don’t accept racist or phobic language so why is it okay to use God, Jesus, Christ etc in these contexts? It’s really uncomfortable to read constantly 🙁

As Ricky Gervais often says "just because you are offended, it doesn't mean you are right"

If you believe it to be blasphemy then of course you don't have to use those phrases but you can't expect people who are not Christian (or religious at all) to abide by Bible teachings - unless perhaps they are guests in your home.

Many religious beliefs offend me by the way, especially the homophobic and misogynistic ones. In my opinion, religion shouldn't have special status meaning it can never be criticised or challenged.

DGRossetti · 30/05/2021 10:28

Allah is simply the Arabic word for God. Christians living in Arabic speaking countries often pray to Allah too - god is an English word, not a Christian word.

And Islam also protects Christians (and Jews) - it's specifically in the Koran. So you can judge these faux "muslims" who try and piggyback on peoples ignorance of Islam to pretend they are devout. Especially if you've had years of practice doing the same with "Christians". ....

The burning question is what the fuck happened to the "Sabians" ?

Macncheeseballs · 30/05/2021 10:28

I think taking female genitals in vain far more offensive

UhtredRagnarson · 30/05/2021 10:28

I wish some pp on here were a bit nicer though, there’s no need to be horrible.

But @Tigertalk you were horrible nasty in your PA comment to @Flowers500. Are you a hypocrite?

DGRossetti · 30/05/2021 10:30

@Macncheeseballs

I think taking female genitals in vain far more offensive
possibly because we are far more in awe of them than a hypothetical male sky fairy ?
Tigertalk · 30/05/2021 10:30

@HoneyDragon love shitweasel 😁
My ds actually started saying ‘OMG’ the other day. I guess it’s from nursery. I know @Camomila I’ve tried to get them to say ‘ goodness’ too.
For me it’s more when there are loads of expletives or God is followed by ‘ your dp is a c*nt’ or something. It’s just hard to read.
For those talking about the atrocities of Christianity , I believe in God and the Bible but I think a huge amount of mistakes have been made by those who were acting as Christians. They were wrong. I mean you just have to look at child abuse in recent times.
Appalling stuff.

Racism and homophobia are real.
God is a figment of someone's imagination made up thousands of years ago to explain phenomena that we now know is explainable via science. So not the same at all.

Merchymor · 30/05/2021 10:32

I know a chaplain who says oh my god all the time. When I first met her I avoided saying it but now realise she doesn't give a holy shit.

TO12T39FRQ · 30/05/2021 10:32

Hmm this thread shows Christianity is a bit of a shitshow really

I mean, tell me again what this bible says about gay people?

SoapboxFox · 30/05/2021 10:32

I prefer not to hear these terms used TBH. Swearing usually sounds harsh and aggressive to me, religious or not. Not much I can do about it though.

DGRossetti · 30/05/2021 10:32

I believe in God and the Bible

which one ?

Jesus is used because we are, historically, a Christian country. The cursing is the result of a culture of belief.

HunkyPunk · 30/05/2021 10:33

But surely when Ted invokes Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey, he's appealing for them to give him strength at a moment of particular stress or shock, not blaspheming? I can understand why the addition of swear words to the names might offend, but surely phrases like 'for God's sake' aren't offensive. People have been appealing to God and other deities since time immemorial. 'God give me strength', 'In God's name'. Are they ok?

TO12T39FRQ · 30/05/2021 10:33

@Tigertalk maybe you can elaborate.....what’s this gods stance on homosexuality?

LordEdgwareDies · 30/05/2021 10:33

FFS

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 30/05/2021 10:33

Even Richard Dawkins has been recorded for posterity on a radio show letting out an inadvertent 'God!'.

It just can't be helped sometimes.

Christians who rely on the old testament are effectively giving the Big J the finger about the New Testament.

Thread reminds me what writers of The Simpsons said about Islam. They could take the mick out of any other religion but not Muslims.

You could get het up about that as "only Islam gets respect"; or you could hear what it really means: the other religions were secure, robust & confident enough to comfortably shrug off light-hearted or casual treatment and criticisms.

UhtredRagnarson · 30/05/2021 10:36

I don’t think I was nasty I just said she/he sounded angry. I think flowers and I are just fine

No. You were being a dick. You know this, I know this, everyone who has read the thread knows this. And what’s more- we all know you did a head tilt and a wry smile when you posted it. You may be new here, but we aren’t.

midsomermurderess · 30/05/2021 10:36

The first word that came to me when I read that post was 'Jesus'. This site is becoming increasingly unbearable. Once I could find it quite comedic, now it's increasingly vapid and wearisome.

Blondiney · 30/05/2021 10:37

Nobody died from feeling a bit uncomfortable. You’ll get through it.

Tigertalk · 30/05/2021 10:38

I’m not new , I’ve been on here years. I’m sure flowers can post to me if she/ he wants to raise an issue

I think as Christians we are called to consider our own actions, thoughts and words, try to walk in the way of Christ as best we can and try to be good examples of how to live as a Christian. Of course we all fall way short but each time we fail we should acknowledge our faults and resolve to do better.
I do not think that we are called on to judge others, we can explain why we choose not to use certain words then accept that others will make their own choices.
