Using God/Christ in negative threads

Tigertalk · 30/05/2021 09:00

Hi all, I’m a long time mumsnetter but finding it hard to read constant threads (as a Christian) that use phrases starting with ‘ for G*d’s sake ( insert some nasty phrase about something) . We don’t accept racist or phobic language so why is it okay to use God, Jesus, Christ etc in these contexts? It’s really uncomfortable to read constantly 🙁

LibertyMole · 30/05/2021 13:46

It’s not a hate crime to say insulting things about any religious groups.

WeatherwaxOn · 30/05/2021 13:47

My pagan friends say "Oh Gods". I wouldn't say anything anyone might consider offensive in front of people I'd just met, or in a situation where it could be contentious (school, guides, cubs, kids clubs).

However, blasphemy does not equate to racsim or homophobia.

Freecuthbert · 30/05/2021 13:47

@romdowa

I'm quite offended by religion in general and I think its a pity more people don't feel the same way. All the awful awful things done in the name of religion but yet religious People still have the neck to get up on their high horses 🙄🙄🙄
Yep, exactly!
littlepattilou · 30/05/2021 13:48

littlepattilou

Imagine issuing the same rude and insulting comments towards Muslims? Hindus? Sikhs? Nope. Not allowed. It's a hate crime. (And quite rightly so!) Somehow it's OK to slate and mock Christians though...

@Againstmachine

Nope not rightly so no religion should beyond getting insulted.

I mean 'rightly so,' that insulting other religions is a hate crime, not rightly so that they are insulted!

Fucking hell! Confused

I can't believe I actually had to explain that! Confused

LibertyMole · 30/05/2021 13:49

It’s not a hate crime.

Yeah because people who are NOT religious NEVER do awful AWFUL things do they?! Confused It's just religious people who do nasty shit?!
Siepie · 30/05/2021 13:53

It doesn't surprise me that you compare blasphemy to homophobia. The people who taught me not to blaspheme (parents, preachers, etc) are the same ones who are disgusted that I fell in love with a woman.

As an atheist I'm not going to follow Christian teachings on blasphemy. If God does exist and gets offended, he can send me to hell for it since I'm already going

Freecuthbert · 30/05/2021 13:53

@littlepattilou

What on earth... @romdowa is not saying only religious people do awful things Confused

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 30/05/2021 13:55

Unfortunately I accidentally say "oh god" all the time, especially when I'm in the presence of religious people.

HeronLanyon · 30/05/2021 13:59

But little those of us who aren’t religious do see being religious as voluntary - it is after all a belief system - so that analogy doesn’t really work.

VinylCafe · 30/05/2021 14:04

@HappyHappyHippocampus

Also,

Can you not see the ABSOLUTE FUCKING HYPOCRISY of a Christian church being upset about blasphemy when they actively persecute and encourage homophobic and racist behaviour.

I mean c’mon!!!!!!!

Exactly. Remains of 215 indigenous children (some as young as 3) were just found on the Kamloops residential school grounds that had been operated by the Catholic Church and the Canadian government and the authorities think this is just the tip of the iceberg. Canada AND the church have a very sorry past to own up to. Those poor children were taken from their mothers and put into schools like this in an attempt to wipe out their language, religion and culture. The school in question ran until 1969!
www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/05/29/residential-school-grave/

After the immensely bloody history Christian religion has, tell me why I shouldn't use swear words with god or Jesus Christ in them? I swear when I'm angry and usually only say phrases with lots of 'fucks' in them. But after reading about those poor children, I've been very blasphemous when swearing because I'm very, very angry.

MyDcAreMarvel · 30/05/2021 14:06

@SimonJT Allah is just the arabic word for god, as you think its right that posts are deleted I have to assume you have been very busy reporting posts with the word god in.
Well that post made no sense! People should not use God or Jesus in place swearing. Posters wouldn’t dare offend Muslims but Christians are fair game.

amusedtodeath1 · 30/05/2021 14:06

I agree Vinyl, and how does any of that reconcile itself with, love thy neighbor, let he who is without sin cast the first stone, etc., etc.,

LadyVymes · 30/05/2021 14:07

@BagORats

I had no idea about blimey, how interesting. My grandmother never liked us to say bloody - from what I've googled this isn't necessarily a religious expletive so why would this be objectionable?
“Bloody’s in the bible, bloodys in the book, if you don’t believe me, take a bloody look” My mum received a sound thrashing when she said that to a nun at school.
Landedmydreamjob · 30/05/2021 14:09

Don’t call anyone a berk then.

LibertyMole · 30/05/2021 14:11

Many people believed bloody referred to ‘by our lady’ but I think it was shown not to be the case.

I still wouldn’t say it in front of older people.

OhGodNotThisAgain · 30/05/2021 14:15

Where’s the science on mumsnet? Do you mean trans threads? Wearing a face mask?
I guess I’ll cancel my scientific publication subscriptions now, I’ve got mumsnet.

Nope I gotit first time you didn't, insulting any religion should never be a hate crime, religion is a choice, sexuality,races isn't.

Religion seems to have this all powerful god,but people get upset at people insulting it, but you have a good that kills people then it's gods will, but if they are saved it's thank God.

Againstmachine · 30/05/2021 14:21

Steve Hughesexplains being offended greatly

Catlover77 · 30/05/2021 14:23

I am not offended by blasphemy.

I am offended by being ‘blessed’ all the bleeding time! What is it with under 30s who continually bless people? Is this copied behaviour or have they all suddenly lost all reasoning

letsghostdance · 30/05/2021 14:24

As for it only being acceptable to make fun of Christianity, it's this way in the UK because it's what we're most exposed to. In another country it would be different. The churches ran this country (through aggression, oppression and general taxation) for centuries. Now they don't. I'm absolutely delighted. After centuries of that I think that the us, the little people, have the right to criticise, don't you? People still clinging to the church is like people clinging to a bad relationship.

As it is, I really can't stick religions. Any of them. Religious people are alright though, as long as they don't try and thought police me (as is happening here) Wink

OhRene · 30/05/2021 14:26

Oh my fucking god! Fine. I'll pick another word instead.

Oh my fucking unicorn!

Or maybe Oh my fucking tooth fairy!

How about Oh my fucking abominable snowman! Wait, there is that photo so that one could be real......

DGRossetti · 30/05/2021 14:27

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

Also the UK really isn't a "Christian country". The percentage of practising Christians is declining rapidly.
Our head of state is also the head of the church. Hence we have an Established religion.
IntermittentParps · 30/05/2021 14:28

Would they not?

Absolutely the church has done this for century's even millenniums, but 50 years of people answering back they are getting up upset, pull the other one.
