to ask if weed smoking is normal and it's me who is odd

Imustbeboring · 30/05/2021 02:28

I hate weed. I think the smell of the stuff is absolutely vile. But it's everywhere. Wherever I go in my local area (not actually a very bad area), I smell it. I have friends who smoke it - decent hard working people with good jobs. I've lived in 3 different towns / cities in the past 10-15 years and it's been a problem in all these places.

Why do people think it's ok to inflict their drug use on others?
Is it just me, actually? Is everyone else normal and I'm the odd one out for not smoking it?
Urgh.

Not normal but not unusual either

starrynight21 · 30/05/2021 03:02

I can't see any point to it. I am perfectly able to relax and enjoy life without any "help" from weed. I know a lot of people like it, but I'm not one of them.

NumberTheory · 30/05/2021 03:07

Lots people smoke weed, nearly as many as smoke nicotine, but just like with nicotine that doesn’t mean it’s okay to inflict it on those who don’t like it.

SmokedDuck · 30/05/2021 03:09

It's pretty common but certainly not everyone.

But in the last five or ten years I would say I've seen a significant shift in attitudes about recreational drug use, including using alcohol as a recreational drug (rather than as food.) It's been more normalised than it had been fo some time, and people sees to have less worry about what underlying psychological issues might be related to use.

Weirdly though people seem to have become less cognisant of inflicting stinky weed on others at the same time they've stopped inflicting tobacco on others.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 30/05/2021 03:13

It's the same in my town ATM. Quite a nice place, get a lot of people moving her because it has decent schools and its a good commuter town, but everywhere I go I smell it.
Loads of people on here will tell you kts normal but it's not. On MN if you smoke regular tobacco, you might aswell be killing people, but everyone smokes joints and its all hunky dory apparently.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 30/05/2021 03:24

My windows are open and I can smell weed now from the house four doors along. It's very obvious when I walk past where the smell is coming from. I can sometimes smell it from the back garden. Apart from that the family seem fine.

We have a few alcoholics on our street. They make a lot of noise when drunk, collapsing on the street, shouting, fighting etc. There is a drug addict that visits his father and often demands money. The police are occasionally needed. I'd far rather people smoked weed.

stopgap · 30/05/2021 04:04

It’s very common. I’m in the US where it’s medically legal in my state and about to be made legal for recreational use. I’ve many friends who’ve switched to tinctures and edibles instead of having a glass of wine in the evening. I use it for insomnia, and it’s far better and safer than any conventional sleeping pill.

CoalCraft · 30/05/2021 04:25

I don't suppose it's normal in the sense that more than 50% of the population does it, but it isn't rare either. Some of my friends have tried it but none are regular users afaik. We're all late twenties. On the other hand in big cities you can smell it everywhere.

I agree that the smell is grim and personally I think it's ridiculous to deliberately inhale smoke of any kind, but I don't think it's a scourge on society. As long as people don't smoke and drive or otherwise use it in a way that endangers others, whatever.

Anyone who takes illegal drugs by their actions is indirectly a racist. The victims of the trade are disproportionately young black men.

orangejuicer · 30/05/2021 07:45

Not this again northerner!

How much did you smoke this morning?
romdowa · 30/05/2021 07:53

I hate it , god the smell is horrendous and gives me headaches. Bloody sticks to everything as well , if a neighbour smokes it while I've washing out then it all has to be rewashed. I've no issues with anyone smoking it but I think there needs to be consideration for others around them. It's these hybrid strains that reek though.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/05/2021 07:55

I’ve never tried it and I’m the odd one out I think- seems pretty prevalent

Georgieporgie29 · 30/05/2021 07:56

I agree op. I seem to smell it everywhere and was having this same conversation last night. Took my child to the park yesterday tea time, it was full of youths and they were smoking weed, passed somebody on the school run last week smoking weed (dd asked what the smell was), went to my friends the other day and her 17yo child was going to a friends to smoke weed. It just seems to be the norm at the moment.

KarmaStar · 30/05/2021 08:00

I don't use not do my family and nearly all my friends, one does for pain relief.
Unfortunately I have seen, professionally, the mental health, financial and progression to class A drugs that results from smoking weed in a majority, not all,of cases.
Yanbu at all,it's wrong that people will happily smoke this with young children around.

FreezerBird · 30/05/2021 08:00

I don't know if it's more common than it used to be, but it's certainly more common for people to be quite relaxed about smoking in public.

DS finished y11 on Thursday, and went down to the beach after school as did most of the rest of the year group, and y13. When I went down to pick him up I walked along the prom and it absolutely reeked of weed. I think there was probably more because of all the kids but it wasn't just them by any means.

Thankfully DS hates the smell.

Anyone who makes sweeping generalisations on the Internet is a bit of a sausage.

TheQueef · 30/05/2021 08:04

Hopefully when it's legalised there will be rules about smoking in public places.

Divebar2021 · 30/05/2021 08:04

I don’t notice it very often in my commuter town... occasionally walking by teenagers in the park. Having seen what cannabis psychosis looks like in full flow I wouldn’t go near it myself. People can do what they want to their brain cells but smoking around kids is rank. I would also be quite happy for anyone getting behind the wheel while stoned to face the legal consequences of that shitty decision.

Grin.
CaptainMyCaptain · 30/05/2021 08:20

It was among people I knew in the 70s but not among people I know now. I don't even know many people who smoke - only a couple and they do it away from other people. It's just not socially acceptable any more.

AntiWorkBrigade · 30/05/2021 08:24

Oh, yes, the stink! cloying and seems to spread so far. If it was vaped or just a weaker smell I wouldn’t care about it at all.

I’d be interested in knowing what it smells like in these places where it’s legal. The same, or is it more like what it was twenty years ago? I lived in a student house around that time where the other occupants had such big weed habits that the small living room was obscured by smoke for large parts of the day - but I don’t remember being bothered by the smell much.

Apart from the antisocial smell (and a pp is so right that we’d no sooner got rid of the revolting smell of ciggies from public places than this came along), I worry that it is so completely normalised in youngish teenagers and as something you smell coming out of cars. We wouldn’t tolerate them with alcohol, but if it’s weed there doesn’t seem to be an issue. Given the link with MH problems for some users, having people with developing brains be among the heaviest users seems less than optimal to me. And as for driving, my partner was told to be alert for the smell of weed when taking motorbike lessons really - like this is a normal and inevitable road hazard now.

dray9925 · 30/05/2021 08:24

I live in a first floor flat and the person underneath me smokes it inside his home, I hate it I can smell it in my flat all the time. Unfortunately I have found the people I've met that smoke it are selfish and don't care about the fact it absolutely stinks and isn't nice for anyone else.

SmokeyDevil · 30/05/2021 08:28

There's a lot of good reasons it's banned, although people here often say 'well America thinks it's ok'. Great example to use there, the country who voted in trump. Hmm

So many people smoke it and you don't realise. More people in your workplace will smoke it than you know about.

TheQueef · 30/05/2021 08:28

They do have roadside drug test for driving under the influence (here) but a campaign would be good like at Christmas.
