to ask if weed smoking is normal and it's me who is odd

I hate weed. I think the smell of the stuff is absolutely vile. But it's everywhere. Wherever I go in my local area (not actually a very bad area), I smell it. I have friends who smoke it - decent hard working people with good jobs. I've lived in 3 different towns / cities in the past 10-15 years and it's been a problem in all these places.

Why do people think it's ok to inflict their drug use on others?
Is it just me, actually? Is everyone else normal and I'm the odd one out for not smoking it?
Urgh.

I’d be interested in knowing what it smells like in these places where it’s legal

The whole "weed wasn't like this 20 years ago" thing is a bit of a myth. There's been 20%+ THC strains around for 30 years. Admittedly not much of them in the UK but even with the rise in quality recently in the UK the average commercial product is still miles off the quality of weed in legal jurisdictions

CherryPippa · 30/05/2021 08:36

We live alongside a public footpath running down the edge of a forest. People congregate down there smoking the bloody stuff. They think they can’t be seen but they can be smelt straight away. It even comes in the house via the flu from our gas fireplace in the lounge sometimes. It’s is absolutely vile and much more offensive than cigarette smoke IMO. I’ve only noticed this since last summer. I’d smelt it around the area prior but very rarely.

AntiWorkBrigade · 30/05/2021 08:37

That would be good @TheQueef. I don’t think it’s taken anything like as seriously as drink driving by many people. I don’t know if they’re still stuck in that view that people joked about when I was younger - that the only danger from smoking weed and driving was that you’d be travelling really slowly and steadily. Not so from what I’ve seen!

AntiWorkBrigade · 30/05/2021 08:40

Oh dear, @Chanjer - that’s very bad news for those of us that don’t like it!

I was very much clinging to the idea that it would be a return to the student house days.

TheQueef · 30/05/2021 08:44

Same here Antiwork admittedly you do see the odd knobber sat at a green light but that's just perpetuating the myth.

I smoke and would categorically agree drug driving is as bad as drink, likely worse because drugs don't come with %vol.

EdgeOfACoin · 30/05/2021 08:49

I can't stand the smell - I'm sure it used to have a milder scent. I used to quite like the smell growing up.

Now it just makes me feel sick. Our next door neighbour smokes it and it means sitting out in our garden is unbearable.

Chanjer · 30/05/2021 08:49

@AntiWorkBrigade

I don't think of it became legal that it would become much more noticeable.

Also I presume you're talking about hash, which until 20 years ago was by far the most common form in the UK and is hardly available now in comparison to weed. Presumably under a legalised system there'd be higher availability of different types, as in people wouldn't solely concentrate on producing the most profitable types. In Amsterdam legal hash is very common. In America not so much but they've not had the tradition of has in the way that Europe has

EdgeOfACoin · 30/05/2021 08:51

And yes, it's a lot more prevalent now than it used to be. Every time I go out someone is smoking it. I smell it all the time.

Bagelsandbrie · 30/05/2021 08:51

I hate it and have never smoked - that or normal stuff. Can’t stand the smell of it and as someone with asthma I can’t understand why people want to fill their lungs with shit.

InTheDrunkTank · 30/05/2021 08:52

It depends what you mean by inflict their drug use on everyone else? It's hardly the end of the world to smell a little weed walking down the street. If my neighbours were smoking constantly flooding my garden with it yes I'd have a problem with it.

Dingleydel · 30/05/2021 08:57

A hell of a lot of people do smoke it. I know a whole range. There’s the wake up and it’s the 1st thing they do (they haven’t fared so well) and professional people who live very responsible lives who use it occasionally or use it in the evening in place of having a beer. I think it’s time to legalise it. County lines and drugs gags are totally out of control in the U.K. I see the impact on my small rural town. Selling weed must make up an enormous chunk of their business. It’s arguably a lot less dangerous than alcohol.

Velvian · 30/05/2021 09:00

It shouldn't be smoked imo. You shouldn't inflict it on others around you. I don't really care if people want to consume it in other ways.

It seems to have some really important therapeutic uses, but people that use it recreationally tend to be a bit boring, I've found. My BIL is a much more interesting person since he stopped.

OverTheRubicon · 30/05/2021 09:01

Unfortunately I have seen, professionally, the mental health, financial and progression to class A drugs that results from smoking weed in a majority, not all,of cases.

The majority, really? I'm not a weed smoker and I really don't like daily use (it has become an issue with ex and I), but I also know a number of people who have used it for decades with no 'progession', certainly less than those drinking a daily glass of wine.

That said, I do think that a lot of users are in denial about their psychological dependence (just like a lot of daily wine drinkers, to be fair), as well as the smell and funding of organised crime, in places where it is illegal.

Chamonixshoopshoop · 30/05/2021 09:04

I don’t know anyone that still smokes it, even very occasionally anymore.
The ones that did it regularly at school all went on to much worse and one has just had her kids taken off her for substance abuse.
I know alcohol is also awful when abused! I’m not singling out weed here.
So no, I don’t think it’s that prevalent.
Amongst gen z I guess it is, it’s a shame as it’s such a powerful neurological drug, the state it sent my cousin into is awful (again, he abused it, I’m not having a go at all weed users)

AntiWorkBrigade · 30/05/2021 09:12

Thanks for replying, Chanjer. That’s interesting. I’m not familiar with the the various types, but I think you’re right about it being hash all those years ago. It had also occurred to me that legalisation would bring about variety because people will want different things.

I’m not knowledgeable about the product, but have experience of the anti-social behaviour that dealing brings with it so am very interested in the subject of legalisation.

Rmka · 30/05/2021 09:13

I hate the smell too and I never tried it. My husband is the same, he never smoke tobacco either.

But I think the solution would be to make it legal and control it like (or actually more than) tobacco. Then people can buy it legally but only smoke in certain places. And they'd pay taxes on it.
