I need some hedgehog help!

So, yesterday my DH saw a council gardener walking down our street with a hedgehog and put it in the wooded area near our house.

This morning, I was taking the children to school and a very poorly looking hedgehog was on the pavement, I initially thought it might be dead but it was warm to touch so I picked it up and it rolled into a ball so obviously alive.

It’s now in my living room in a cardboard box on a fleece jumper against the radiator.

It has unfurled a little, it’s breathing, it’s stretched it’s leg out a bit so I assume it’s okay and sleeping?

The plan is to move it’s box into the dogs cage overnight (if he’s still alive) with some dog food and water.

Is this right?

I don’t want to take him to a vet because as far as I can see it isn’t injured and our vets will euthanise it.

I don’t drive so taking it to a wildlife sanctuary isn’t an option either.

Thanks OP, which rescue is he off to? My contacts on the Hedgehog forum are all wanting updates 😃🦔 I'm so glad he is off to a rescue and you've done an amazing thing!

This thread is so lovely!

This is fantastic - hog and dog photo made my entire day

Little hoggy has gone with the rescue lady.
She couldn’t have been nicer, Louise from ‘the hedgipeg hideaway’.

She said he was dehydrated, which was a bit shocking to me considering how much water he drank!
I suppose he’ll need IV fluid.
She said he was underweight too but seemed very confident she could help him.
Said she’d keep me updated and let me know when he is released.

@TheDiddlyGang

Hoggie and dog
This photo has made my day 😍

Glad you managed to get the little one help OP!

TheDiddlyGang · 27/05/2021 20:50

Oh, and I was the lady ‘Hedgehog Haven MK’ was emailing after all!
I expected it to be via Facebook messenger so thought she hadn’t got in touch, phoned Hedgipeg Hideaway then looked at my emails to see the email from Lorraine (Hedgehog Heaven)!

I hope the little guy will be okay, he is such a character!
He must have trusted/liked us, he stopped rolling up everytime I went to pick him up (very necessary; he kept going into the hallway and squeezing through the gate to socialise with the dog 🙄) and had no qualms about climbing over my DDs legs (she sat blocking him from accessing the hallway), again, to get to said dog!

Such great news that the hedgehog has been collected by an organisation who can try and nurse it back to health. I hope it makes a full recovery!

Just seen your update OP.

So pleased he's getting the help he needs, although without your help in the first place he probably would have died.

You did a lovely thing.

SaskiaRembrandt · 28/05/2021 13:16

What a lovely thread, and how kind of you to help the little guy. He looked like a character.

I'm glad you were able to find an 'expert', hope he makes a full recovery and is soon back home in the woods.

TheDiddlyGang · 28/05/2021 13:32

He looked like a character
He was!
The children named him Barry Grin

I haven’t had an update yet so hope little Barry is doing okay.

I'm glad that you found someone to help in the end.
Barry's a great name for a hedgehog. We called ours Lisa!

SaskiaRembrandt · 29/05/2021 07:32

I love the idea of a hedgehog called Barry Grin

EngelbertsRumpispink · 31/05/2021 05:32

Hoping for an update. Smile
