I need some hedgehog help!

So, yesterday my DH saw a council gardener walking down our street with a hedgehog and put it in the wooded area near our house.

This morning, I was taking the children to school and a very poorly looking hedgehog was on the pavement, I initially thought it might be dead but it was warm to touch so I picked it up and it rolled into a ball so obviously alive.

It’s now in my living room in a cardboard box on a fleece jumper against the radiator.

It has unfurled a little, it’s breathing, it’s stretched it’s leg out a bit so I assume it’s okay and sleeping?

The plan is to move it’s box into the dogs cage overnight (if he’s still alive) with some dog food and water.

Is this right?

I don’t want to take him to a vet because as far as I can see it isn’t injured and our vets will euthanise it.

I don’t drive so taking it to a wildlife sanctuary isn’t an option either.

Just a bit more advice, I wouldn't let him explore your lounge. As a wild animal, he will have fleas and they are also quite messy with their pee and poo and will poo everywhere! Also, although he may seem keen to roam about, he would probably be less stressed if left quietly (indoors), in a high sided box. Put the dishes of cat food and water in the box with him and an old towel/fleece. He may seem happy enough, but they do get very stressed with humans nearby, so quiet and warm in a high sided box with food and water is best, until hopefully one of the rescues can get back to you!

I've just phoned the mobile number for Hedgehog Haven MK, it's ringing but no answer!? Please keep trying x

FreshBedding · 27/05/2021 15:16

I've found a vets that dont euthanise hedgehogs (unless they have to) and can give specialist care including with fosterers in special environments for you (thanks to the forum), they are called
MK vet group (walnut tree) and their number is 01908 397777

MsVillanelle · 27/05/2021 15:25

I've managed to contact the person at Milton Keynes Hedgehog Haven on Facebook. They have just messaged me back and said that they have just emailed someone back about this hoggy, so hopefully that's you OP? Yay, hopefully finally some help for our small spikey friend! Fingers crossed. Please keep us posted.

TheDiddlyGang · 27/05/2021 15:42

Well, I’ve just come back from picking up the kids.
DH tells me he has been like Sonic the hedgehog, climbed up into the dogs bed, walked all around the lounge and hallway, tried to make friends with the dog ((who is safely behind a gate!), been under my desk, my sofa....

I’m afraid I wasn’t the person MK hedgehog messaged Sad
I’ll call again now I’m home.

Oh he is such a brave little boy exploring the house! So glad you found him, fingers crossed somewhere gets back to you with some help soon 🦔

Hoppinggreen · 27/05/2021 16:09
@Hoppinggreen

They definitely would. I've had the SSPCA out for an injured frog and a pigeon.
SSPCA not RSPCA
Maybe you’ve been lucky but I’ve been involved in enough Rescues of Wildlife and lost domestic animals to know that there’s not much point in general in calling them

Mamamamasaurus · 27/05/2021 16:16

Can't believe I've only just seen this thread

OP, I fucking love you

More photos. We need more photos or we can't possibly keep replying 😉

strawberries0 · 27/05/2021 16:27

hedgehogs can be hyperactive when they have a parasite burden, so please don't assume that being active = wellness, especially in the daytime, as there's clearly something wrong with the chap. On a side note, you should chastise your council for leaving a poorly hedgehog, possibly they disturbed it whilst strimming, to educate their staff!? I hope you can get him to a rescue ASAP and well done :)

strawberries0 · 27/05/2021 16:30

Time is of the essence with hedgehogs so if you or DH or friend or neighbour can get it to someone today, or they can come to you, please do.

honeygirlz · 27/05/2021 16:31

Wow, I haven't seen a real hog in 30+ years. Adorable. Glad to see he is looking better and hopefully gets back to full health.

Billybagpuss · 27/05/2021 16:33

If I posted a pic of hoggie and dog, dog would be on her hind legs straining at the lead announcing to the world at the top of her voice that there’s a strange prickly thing in the garden. That’s so lovely to see.

But you can have a pic of hoggie and fox.

(Omg hoggie autocorrects to some strange things).

I have an update!!!
I’ve just messaged my address to rescue and he should be picked up around 7.30.
Smile

My DD is devastated!
But needs must.

I’m so relieved.
Not only am I worried about the hog, but frankly, he’s worse than a toddler!
He keeps trying to make friends with my dog, I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to lift him up and move him.

He refuses to stay in his box!

Sorry, this is my third message now! But wanted to say that keeping hedgehogs in 'captivity' (by which I mean indoors generally, not as a slight to your wonderful efforts!) instantly raises their parasite count quite considerably, so keeping them in even one night can be fatal with flukeworm. In this case, seeing a vet today would be better than nothing.

pigsDOfly · 27/05/2021 16:50

Oh well done OP to have found him somewhere.

Lovely to hear of someone being so caring and making all this effort for little animal.

You're a star Star

Yikes no wonder they are declining! Why are they so vulnerable. Those worms look nasty on google.
Hoppinggreen · 27/05/2021 17:40

Great news
Please make sure your dog is treated for parasites as Hogs are full of them generally

Newfluff · 27/05/2021 18:57

Thank you all, op for caring and all the posters for giving advice and using their contacts so much good on here.

SpringCrocus · 27/05/2021 19:16

And check dog for ticks, as well as everything else. Sadly often found on hoggies
