Should I have expected to be charged for toner on top of highlights?

I had my haircut for the first time in 16 months today and asked for 'full head of highlights'. I knew the highlights would be about £100 and the cut about £60. All good.

Once it was all over, they tell me it will be £210. I asked why and they said "there was also the toner which was £50".

I was really shocked, but maybe it's normal to charge for these separately (I've never experienced that before, it was just the cost of the highlights and than included toner).

AIBU to feel a bit annoyed they didn't tell me? Feel like cost of highlights was really £150... but if it's the norm to charge separately and that I should have realised, that's fine and I know for next time...

OMG that’s well expensive! I only pay £80/90 for all that. Never been charged for toner separately.

sbhydrogen · 18/05/2021 20:52

Woooooow that's terrible! If it had been a tenner, I would have been miffed but not said anything, but fifty quid, are they mad? You should have refused to pay it as they said nothing about its cost. That's a lot of money :(

seanceinterrupted · 18/05/2021 20:53

I've definitely been charged extra for toner before but not that much, I'm sure!

dementedpixie · 18/05/2021 20:54

Jeezo, I get highlights and a cut for £60 and have never been charged for toner

PeteWicksSexyPirate · 18/05/2021 20:56

I’ve been charged £10 for toner before but was told before they applied it so I could have chosen to not have toner. If they didn’t tell you beforehand then that’s their problem, not yours.

Sciurus83 · 18/05/2021 20:56

Fifty quid for toner?! That is so expensive, god I thought my salon was expensive but that's nuts! I might expect to pay extra, but £10

Diggingaholeformyself · 18/05/2021 20:56

I pay £125 for a full head highlights with toner and the cut is included and I live somewhere that salon prices aren't cheap.

Tibtab · 18/05/2021 20:58

I have to pay £20 for toner on top, it is an extra service that takes time and product. They should have told you in advance but it’s not like you could refuse.

Babyroobs · 18/05/2021 20:58

I paid £77 or the same this week, never been charged for toner separately. It sounds like a mistake.

CovidCorvid · 18/05/2021 21:01

Dd got charged extra once. Was £35 for full headlights, they asked if she wanted toner.....she said yes....they didn’t explain it was an extra £10. She was only 16yo and was a bit annoyed, I thought it was bad they had made it clear it was extra.

ihavethehighground · 18/05/2021 21:01

that was expensive! I have both baylage and cut for £60/70 . Surely any toner is included ???

Tk5787338 · 18/05/2021 21:03

I pay £20 for toner at my hairdressers home salon but she always checks I’m happy for it and I’d expect a salon to do the same

Willow4987 · 18/05/2021 21:13

My salon does charge extra for toner but it’s £15

I would also have expected to be told what it was going to cost

£50 is an extortionate amount for toner

haveaday · 18/05/2021 21:29

My salon charges £14 for toner but only £56 for a full head of foils and £30 for a cut a blew dry so makes a nice round £100

Hankunamatata · 18/05/2021 21:31

Full head highlights, toner and restyled cut came to £120 - fairly cheap area

MrsBungle · 18/05/2021 21:33

I’ve had to pay extra for toner before but it was a tenner! £50 is extortionate!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 18/05/2021 21:35

Yes, expect to be charged for toner as it is an extra colouring service but £50 is insane.

LynetteScavo · 18/05/2021 21:52

£50 for toner is ridiculous. I've been charged £20 at a more expensive salon in the Midlands.

MinnieJackson · 18/05/2021 22:08

Oh no! Is it a new salon that's really expensive or your regular? YANBU! From the other comments i didn't know that highlights and a cut are quite cheap! We're rural West mids and it's generally £170 for any cut and colour. We haven't been able to afford it so cut each others hair but I've been saving to get highlights.

MinnieJackson · 18/05/2021 22:11

If you didn't have the toner would your hair have been orangey? First time looking at highlights for me after noticing how bloody grey I'm going on in lockdown Confused

cherrybonbons · 18/05/2021 22:12

I was going to say of course you pay extra for toner. But not £50 extra! That's insane. Usually around £10-20 max! They've ripped you off

PongoPongo · 18/05/2021 22:13

Thank you all!!

Am going to complain. it is my regular but I've not been charged like this before. I don't mind paying a bit more but want to be told / asked and good (sort of!) to know I'm not wrong that that's extortionate.

It’s normal to be charged for toner, although usually they talk to you about it first, giving you the option basically. £50 Is expensive though

JJSS123 · 18/05/2021 22:18

Wow!!! We used to be told to charge £10/£15 for a toner but we would try and do it on the sly so not to charge the client.

A toner is costing them max £10ish. They’ve really took the Piss!!

SweatyBetty20 · 18/05/2021 22:19

Can I ask a stupid question? What is the toner for? I have foils for highlights and then they put something on at the backwash - would this be toner? What does it do? I’m charged £140 all in so no idea what the toner costs or what it does.
