Should I have expected to be charged for toner on top of highlights?

I had my haircut for the first time in 16 months today and asked for 'full head of highlights'. I knew the highlights would be about £100 and the cut about £60. All good.

Once it was all over, they tell me it will be £210. I asked why and they said "there was also the toner which was £50".

I was really shocked, but maybe it's normal to charge for these separately (I've never experienced that before, it was just the cost of the highlights and than included toner).

AIBU to feel a bit annoyed they didn't tell me? Feel like cost of highlights was really £150... but if it's the norm to charge separately and that I should have realised, that's fine and I know for next time...

Sounds like they're trying to recover some of their lost income from the past year. A lot of businesses will be doing this, but hopefully most of them will go under.

@SweatyBetty20
When the hair is lifted with bleach it takes the tone out and if u have lovely light lift and it’s clean (some people won’t need a tone if it looks good ) mostly thou hair is never lifted so light that it would look good unless u are very light naturally what a toner does is add a nice tone that the lift has taken out . When lifted we reveal warmth and using a toner can counteract this my adding ash tones or it can add warmth all depending on what your final colour end result is is !
So an example would be u want a balayage your hair is maybe level 7 medium blonde/brown and the lift has exposed yellow which no would would like a toner with a violet would counteract this and if u wanted it slight beige you would add beige to the mix ! Hope this helps explain it a little bit it’s also good for blending as well x

@Hairobsessed123 - thanks so much, that’s really educational!

Re what others have said about hidden costs, I have a pot in my Monzo account just for hair - I put £30 a month in and it kind of cushions the blow of a big bill at the end.
