Speeding fine

netmums21 · 18/05/2021 14:23

Help!

I was out driving and was coming home, my Speedo said I was doing 30-32 mph but my DP pointed out a speed camera after I passed it. My mind was taken off my speed just for all of a Damn second as well as I'm usually a very slow annoying driver.
What's the likely hood of a speeding fine if I was going at 32? I think my Speedo is off as well as my sat nav says I'm going around 25/26 mph when my Speedo says 30 mph.
I'm really stressed out and anxious, I can't get a fine. Sad

You’re not going to get a ticket for 32. Maybe 35 but not 32

Yokey · 18/05/2021 14:26

I also think you'll be fine. I've been convinced I'd get a fine before and nothing's turned up. Try not to worry about it. Won't help anyway.

Optimist1 · 18/05/2021 14:29

A quick google shows "Most police forces have a tolerance of 10% plus 2 mph above the limit before a speed camera 'flashes'. So on a 30 mph road, a camera wouldn't normally activate unless a car drove past at 35 mph or above." so you should be fine.

netmums21 · 18/05/2021 14:29

No it won't help I'm just a very anxious person. I've never had a speeding fine in my life (ten years of driving) and it's the one thing I fear. 😂
That's okay if they won't issue one for 2 miles over, I think I can relax a little. I'm just peed off as I didn't see it and the way DP said it at the time made me feel like I was speeding when I probably wasn't.

Was it a 30 limit? If your speedo is showing 30-32 then that is more than you are actually travelling. Speedometers by design read over.

the Police do generally have a leeway above the speed limit and even if you were going slightly more than you thought I doubt you'll hear anything.

When drivers exceed the speed limits there are often awareness courses before it gets into points/fine territory.

Personally, I'd be more concerned about any points than the fine.

Lonelycrab · 18/05/2021 14:29

32 on your speedo will be 29/30 in real life. The police guidelines (there’s a better term I think for this) are I think 10% plus 3mph, so the normal threshold is 36mph (measured not speedo) and equal or above will get you a fine. Which is the precise speed I got caught at in a 30.

You’re probably going to be ok.

netmums21 · 18/05/2021 14:35

Yes 30mph limit. I am worried about the points, I'm worried about it all. Sad
I guess I'll have to wait and see if anything turns up in the post.

OP posts:
alfagirl73 · 18/05/2021 14:35

In my experience car speedos tend to read a little bit above what you're actually doing - many are set like that - which is why your sat nav may read less. I'd estimate that you were prob doing 30 at most so you'll likely be fine. Don't worry.

alfagirl73 · 18/05/2021 14:37

Worst case scenario - if you've not been caught speeding before you'd likely get offered a speed awareness course - which you'd have to pay for but it's usually cheaper than the fine and no points. But based on what you're saying - I doubt you'll hear anything - you were likely doing 28/29 - 30 at most - which is fine.

FreezeMotherHubbard · 18/05/2021 14:39

@netmums21

Sounds from your description that you'd be OK given speedos tend to read over what you're doing but a lot of forces now would offer a speed awareness course from 34-37mph in a 30 so even if you were caught you'd be looking at a fine and awareness course rather than points.
Hadjab · 18/05/2021 14:40

Did the camera flash? If not, then you shouldn’t get a ticket

netmums21 · 18/05/2021 14:41

No didn't see a flash, it was a police officer with a gun.

OP posts:
GreyGirlAbove · 18/05/2021 14:42

Doesn’t sound like you’ll be caught for that...but if you are, you will have the choice to pay a fine and do the speed awareness course, then you don’t get any points. I don’t think you have anything to worry about

mogsrus · 18/05/2021 14:42

only police Speedos are calibrated, don't worry I wouldn't think you would get a fine.

Ivy48 · 18/05/2021 14:44

Speedos will show you being faster than you are by design. If you monitor your speed and use a GPS with a speedo you’ll notice the GPS will say 27 when your speedo says 30. In all likelihood you were going between 29-31 and there’s a 10% tolerance usually. You’ll be fine

bigbluebus · 18/05/2021 14:47

My car speedo is 3mph above all those speed monitors that give you a readout of your speed as you go past. The chances are yours reads slightly higher too. And unless it's a particular accident blackspot they usually allow a tolerance of 10% so above 33mph would be the speeding fine threshold.

Mamamamasaurus · 18/05/2021 14:50

You absolutely CAN get a ticket for going over the speed limit, even by 1mph, you're OVER the limit.

If you've nevet had a ticket and DO get one, you can usually complete a speed awareness course. It's unlikely given what you've said here though.

Roselilly36 · 18/05/2021 14:53

Try not to worry, the calibration has tolerance due to speedometers not being entirely accurate on every car. For 32mph, I would imagine that would ok, as difficult to prove the reading, by a small margin.

PeanuttyButter · 18/05/2021 14:55

I know it's rubbish but try not to stress, what's done is done and the worst is a ticket. Stressing about what may or may not come is not healthy in this respect and will just leave you feeling more anxious. Chalk it up to a learning experience and move on, if you get away with it or not. Learn from it. For what it's worth Speedos usually over read especially the dial type ones

CatPurple · 18/05/2021 14:56

When you start catastrophising it can often be really helpful to go through the worst case scenario. Your worst case scenario seems to be that you get a ticket? So ask yourself: what will happen if you do? You’ll do a speed awareness course. Nothing bad will happen.

Roselilly36 · 18/05/2021 15:00

So it wasn’t a camera? Was it definitely wthe police, or a community neighbour watching the speeds? If so you may get a letter through the post as a warning.

Moonshine11 · 18/05/2021 15:03

Warning
Fine
Speed awareness course
Points if don’t do course or if your majorly over.
No point stressing until you get a letter, it can take weeks.

netmums21 · 18/05/2021 15:05

It was a speed gun. There was a speeding van parked a little up from him. Sad I know it's not the end of the world, but it would put me off driving again. The likely hood I wasn't speeding, I never usually speed (I even avoid motor ways as I hate going above 50mph 😂) just can't help but worry.
I'll be okay, going to have a cup of tea and will try and forget about it and just remember never to take my mind off the Speedo in future.

OP posts:
Youdoyoutoday · 18/05/2021 15:12

Well in all honesty, what is the worst can happen? You get 3 points and pay a fine or you pay for a speed awareness course and don't get the points. Nobody would know, you don't have to tell people if this happens.
Not as if you were doing 90 past a school at 3pm on a weekday.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/05/2021 15:14

Anyone else reading “speedo” and thinking OP has a speedometer on a pair of budgie smugglers?
