Speeding fine

netmums21 · 18/05/2021 14:23

Help!

I was out driving and was coming home, my Speedo said I was doing 30-32 mph but my DP pointed out a speed camera after I passed it. My mind was taken off my speed just for all of a Damn second as well as I'm usually a very slow annoying driver.
What's the likely hood of a speeding fine if I was going at 32? I think my Speedo is off as well as my sat nav says I'm going around 25/26 mph when my Speedo says 30 mph.
I'm really stressed out and anxious, I can't get a fine. Sad

I know it's not the end of the world, but it would put me off driving again.

Really? You could have done a lot worse 😂

CatPurple · 18/05/2021 15:15

I know it's not the end of the world, but it would put me off driving again.
Ok so worst case scenario for you actually seems to be if it happens for the second time? So much so that you would stop driving just to avoid the incredibly remote possibility.

Rather than avoiding it I would really recommend finding about what would happens to people who get caught speeding twice (you get three points). Then consider whether that consequence is worth taking away driving from yourself.

DahliaMacNamara · 18/05/2021 15:15

I've done exactly the same, OP, complete with the three weeks of unnecessary worry, even though I know my car shows a good couple of mph more than a camera would say I was doing, eg speedo says 29mph, Welcome to Sleepytown Please Drive Safely has me at 27 (smiley face). And I know that you know that the consequences even if you were caught out going at maybe 30.5 mph wouldn't be all that dire, but you'll carry on worrying anyway. It defies logic, but it passes. You'll get through it.

netmums21 · 18/05/2021 15:17

I'm a anxious driver though I'm a nightmare I really would like to give up driving and I think I'm secretly looking for an excuse. 😂
I wish it was about speedos. 😂

@netmums21

Yes 30mph limit. I am worried about the points, I'm worried about it all. Sad I guess I'll have to wait and see if anything turns up in the post.
As someone who’s had two speeding fines in over 30 years on the road, despite being a bit of a girl racer, let me assure you that it’s nothing to fear! You can take a speeding awareness course now so you don’t even get points.
newnortherner111 · 18/05/2021 16:11

Accept any fine or points (latter unlikely) with a good grace. I am glad that unlike 90% plus of drivers you treat the speed limit as a maximum not a minimum.

ragged · 18/05/2021 16:27

my spedometer said 37 when I got my ticket (which said 34)

MIC2689 · 18/05/2021 16:29

You be fine up to 33mph on your Speedo. I got caught doing 38mph in a 30 and got a speed awareness course (as long as you've not had a speed awareness course in the previous 2 years). Really try not to worry!

TimeForTeaAndG · 18/05/2021 16:39

If you are anxious to the point that you avoid motorways and going over 50mph then I would gently suggest you may need to look into that as that isn't a healthy level of anxiety to have.

BillMasen · 18/05/2021 16:42

As others have said, I wouldn’t worry.

Speedos do usually over read a bit, so you seeing 32 is probably really doing 29

Then I understand there’s a 10%+2mph tolerance before they’d do anything (so in a 30 limit it’s likely you’ll only be at risk at 35)

Combine those and you can probably see 38 on the Speedo before you’re at risk (disclaimer, I’m not advocating doing 38, just that if you make an error that’s the point at which you’re likely to get flashed)

Gertie75 · 18/05/2021 16:44

The "10% over the limit" is a myth, it's up to the local councils and some will prosecute at 31mph.
Dh did a speed awareness course last week, it was done via zoom and only took a couple of hours.

Womencanlift · 18/05/2021 16:47

If you are that anxious do you think you may be too anxious to be a safe driver?

Blossomtoes · 18/05/2021 17:47

Given that it’s nothing to do with councils, I’d discount that particular piece of advice. Generally the 10% applies. The last time I was stopped the guy said it was my lucky day. I was doing 39 in a 30 zone and he was only prosecuting anyone doing 40 or more. I admitted to being a very naughty girl and went on my way.
MaryBoBary · 18/05/2021 19:15

If it's your first one then you might get sent on a speed awareness course instead of fines or points. That's what happened to me.

Seefooddiet · 18/05/2021 19:38

I just got caught doing 48 in a 40mph zone. You get the form admitting it was you to fill in and send back off within 28 days.
I didn't get the option of a speed awareness course, it was either 100 pound fine and 3 points or court, despite this being a 'first offence' in 25yrs of driving..
They give you a further 28 days to pay so this covered 2 pay periods and that's the absolute worst that happened.
I really wouldn't stress too much about it.

BelleBlueBell · 18/05/2021 19:45

@Hadjab

Did the camera flash? If not, then you shouldn’t get a ticket
Please don't rely on that, you can certainly get fines without flashes.

I know it's not what happened here but the type of permanent cameras they have in some cities don't flash at all neither do police vans

Elieza · 18/05/2021 19:53

Mark a fortnight from now on your calendar as that’s how long they have to contact you.

Fingers crossed they won’t though.
