To expect Andy Burnham to stand up against anti semitism in Manchester?

A thread for those of us who expect Andy Burnham to speak out against the anti semitism in Manchester. Some Mancunian Jews are scared to leave their houses.

Sadiq Khan has already made a statement. Burnham seems more interested in football today.

Let's get emailing and tweeting him.

Great idea. Have emailed my local MP expressing disappointment and asking him to prompt his Labour colleagues to speak out.

Marcis · 17/05/2021 17:21

Sorry, but have there been publicised incidences of anti-semitism in the media occurring in Manchester in the last week? Tell me if there have

All I have seen is videos of anti- semitism in London- hence the response from the mayor there

I live close to a large Jewish community in Manchester and there is no discernible change in the number of people out in the street, shopping, and I’ve not witnessed or heard about anything local to me.

The Tories seem to coming out and roundly condemning the anti semitic thugs. Other than Sadiq Khan, have we heard much from prominent Labour people?

Kier Starmer, Diane Abbott, Angela Rayner et al.

This. I'm very happy to email MPs to try to get this up the priority list but it would be helpful to have some context, links and course of action wanted from MPs.

Yes

Any others?

donquixotedelamancha · 17/05/2021 17:51

Any others?

I dunno, that was the first two I looked at. Leader, Shadow home sec and mayor would be the obvious first ones to comment. Feel free to google.

Dugee · 17/05/2021 19:23

Nothing from Corbyn's acolytes, unsurprisingly.

Not shocked, although I honestly don't get it: you'd think they'd bend over backwards to at least pretend to be bothered, given how badly this issue hurt them.

Maireas · 17/05/2021 20:36

I've got automated replies so far. All saying covid means a lot of mail etc. We'll see what happens.

Yes Jeremy Corbyn has made a statement too. Have there been anti-Semitic incidents over the last few days too? I'm not keeping up, I did see those absolutely appalling videos in London.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/05/2021 21:05

Yes Jeremy Corbyn has made a statement too.

I think that is a bit wimpy.

I'd like to see him ramming down the throat of his supporters over and over again that the Israeli government and the Jewish people are not the same thing.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 17/05/2021 21:25

I live in Manchester. I haven’t heard any anti Semitism myself but I would be frightened right now if I was Jewish myself. Andy Burnham should say something.

SingleDontWantToMingle · 17/05/2021 21:43

I think Jeremy's statement is weak too. As weak as his efforts to root out anti semitism in the Labour Party.

@donquixotedelamancha

You'd think that recent election results would make them reconsider the importance of listening to people. I think a lot of labour MPs are in it for some kind of vanity project, rather than actually trying to win. It's strange and I don't understand.

Maireas · 18/05/2021 17:23

Anybody had a reply? I've had nothing apart from an automated response from my MP.

LongHotSummerJustPassedMeBy · 18/05/2021 17:38

The men who were arrested for shouting anti-Semitic abuse in London on Sunday were also involved in an incident in Salford on Saturday:

EchoCardioGran · 18/05/2021 18:29

Well now. That's a good bit of detective work.

There was a young woman attacked and punched in the neck at Bowker Vale tram stop on Saturday, as well as all those cars being smashed up in Broughton. Horrible.

Dugee · 18/05/2021 18:45

I've had nothing from Altrincham. Surprised as they normally respond quickly.

Dugee · 18/05/2021 18:47

Aren't they brave, attacking a young woman. Disgusting.

EchoCardioGran · 18/05/2021 19:24

I've heard nothing from Graham Stringer
Surprised Graham Brady didn't yet reply.

SingleDontWantToMingle · 18/05/2021 22:04

I'm not holding my breath for a response from Rebecca Wrong-Bailey.

Have Andy or GMP said anything yet?

Suspect hell will freeze over before I get a response from our Becky.
