AIBU to ask for your help in creating a # for Virgin Media who have dumped on my son during his A level revision?

Sorry but am having a creative block in making a scathing yet effective hashtag for Virgin Media. We've moved house and they've cocked up our broadband and said there'll be a "short delay" of 2+ days to an installation order booked for today. And to cap it all they've offered an appointment for the day I'm having covid vaccine which I need for work. Son is trying to do A level revision.

He can revise without the internet cant he? Surely he has course notes and text books?

hopeishere · 12/05/2021 18:25

Can he not go into school?

Mabelene · 12/05/2021 18:26

Slight over reaction?

Dishwashersaurous · 12/05/2021 18:28

Why does he need the Internet. He should have his notes to revise from.

And surely he can supervise the installation.

Lockheart · 12/05/2021 18:29

They haven't dumped on your son.

It's annoying but you're overreacting.

If he really can't revise without the internet then create a hotspot from your phone and use data, which I presume you have since you're posting on here. As long as he's not downloading videos etc you shouldn't use too much.

AntiSocialDistancer · 12/05/2021 18:29

Can you hotspot from mobile wifi? I do this a fair bit

MadeOfStarStuff · 12/05/2021 18:31

It’s a minor inconvenience, annoying but it happens. You’re overreacting.

Your son can surely revise without internet or can use phone data. If he can’t revise at all without the internet then you have much bigger problems than virgin media.

MissSM9102 · 12/05/2021 18:32

Ask them for a Mobile Broadband hub until your WiFi is up and running, it runs off a SIM card.
Vodafone gave me on when my broadband was delayed and Virgin have the same thing available.

purplemunkey · 12/05/2021 18:33

Yes, another saying use hotspot. I had to do this when I moved house between a first and second interview for a job. Had a presentation to do for second interview and needed internet for research etc. Broadband was not set up yet so I had to use hotspot. Not the end of the world!

A scathing hashtag really won't achieve much.

LIZS · 12/05/2021 18:34

Mobile hotspot? We lost service for several weeks during ds AS level revision period - he went into school as necessary to revise.

MustBeTheWine · 12/05/2021 18:38

Can you not call the school/college he's studying his A level at and explain. They may allow him to go in to study. Sure there's another way round this other than creating a #, as others have said, tad of an overreaction

C152 · 12/05/2021 18:39

For Virgin Media, 2 days is an incredibly short delay! If they'd been keeping you waiting for months, only offering connection options within working hours and giving you about a 10 hour "window" when they arrive (so you have to keep booking a full day's leave), then failing to arrive, over and over again (as seems to be their standard), I would be more inclined to agree that they do with a scathing social media post.

In terms of your son's revision options, others have offered very good solutions - textbooks, notes, a dongle etc. You can also ring the school to explain the issue and ask if he can have access to the school library / computers.

Thamesis · 12/05/2021 18:56

Thanks everyone. Our mobile signal is in and out all the time. He's doing what he can at school but needs to do evenings too. Yes, minor problem but so annoying when I had it all planned and checked by Virgin twice. It's come at the end of a very trying period and it's stressy with a move as well, but obvs not on a major life/death scaleGrin

Good idea re: calling school, thank you.

ThatIsMyPotato · 12/05/2021 18:58

Does he have any notes he can revise from? Or a textbook?

Thamesis · 12/05/2021 19:04

Yes has notes etc, but it all seems to involve referencing stuff online. Will see if neighbours have a better mobile signal and then maybe buy a dongle for that network. At moment we only get a bit of cover in far bottom corner of house.

Thamesis · 12/05/2021 19:06

@C152 that sounds terrible. I'll count my chickens then that it's 2 days not 2 months.

ShinyMe · 13/05/2021 07:38

I would have thought that moving house would be far more disruptive to revision than not having internet tbh...

Absolutely, and when moving you accept that the internet may take a few days to sort. It's quicker these days (not the 3 weeks - month it used to take in our remote village years ago), I'm sure VM took about 3-5 days last time we moved though. Then another few weeks of promising to fix an issue, then forgetting about it....

I'm sure he'll survive for a couple more days without anyway to revise (or whatever he actually wants to be doing online).

Hopdathelf · 13/05/2021 07:51

Good point PP. Surely the disruption of moving has also “dumped”on him.

Comefromaway · 13/05/2021 08:00

@Dishwashersaurous

I'm guessing your child doesn't go to a school or college where there are no textbooks and all resources are internet based.
BritWifeinUSA · 13/05/2021 08:43

If you’ve got enough Mobile signal to access MN then he’s got enough to access what he needs online. It’s not ideal but it’ll have to do. He will face bigger problems than this at some point in his life.

Dishwashersaurous · 13/05/2021 08:47

For revision purposes he should already have done all the work and now be recapping his own notes. He shouldn't need new resources as that would be learning it for the first time, not doing revision.

skirk64 · 13/05/2021 08:48

I wanted to get #bunchofcunts trending when VM cut me off for three weeks once. Two days is pretty good going for them - that's assuming they actually turn up and actually sort you out, of course.

Dishwashersaurous · 13/05/2021 08:50

And moving house is surely far far more disruption than anything else. I don't know anyone who didn't have it disruption when they moved. Although the companies claim that they can do it on the day, always there is a delay. Three weeks for BT
