Underrated places in the UK

I enjoyed reading the thread on overrated places (so strictly this is a TAAT, sorry) but would love to know where in the UK people think is underrated.
Mine is Nantwich. I'd live there like a shot.

Scottish Borders, lovely scenery and coastline, castles and ruined Abbeys and towns like Melrose, Kelso and Peebles with their independent shops, eateries and the river Tweed.

I see Carlisle has had a couple of mentions, It is good for a day out, but, I would urge caution if going out in the evening, it has a reputation for violence, which my friend sadly discovered after being attacked there.

@HettytheHoover

Leicester. Amazing and so unexpected- second richest city in Europe in the 1890s for nice buildings and parks (although I think some areas are not so rich now)
Don’t forget the amazing Indian restaurants.

Nefyn and Pwllheli. Many people seem to miss that peninsula of Wales, but I have fond memories. Haven't been in many moons though, so may be looking back through clouded memories.
Wilmslow by the sea. EVERYONE knows that peninsula if you live in South Manchester.
MirandaMarple · 12/05/2021 23:41

East Yorkshire. From Runswick Bay and anything north of there.

Needhelp101 · 12/05/2021 23:45

Another vote for Liverpool here. The architecture is stunning, everyone we met were so friendly, the culture, I loved it.

NoProblem123 · 12/05/2021 23:50

Rhyl ! And I was very disappointed to see it mentioned on the other thread.

A lovely clean sweeping sandy beach that you can park right next to for free.
Amazing Kite Surfing available.
Views towards Llandudno’s Great Orme and the Snowdonia range including Snowdon itself (All within a short drive).

OldWivesTale · 12/05/2021 23:51

Sheffield

ArcheryAnnie · 12/05/2021 23:54

Seconding Leicester.

Lincoln.

Portsmouth.

CornishGem1975 · 12/05/2021 23:54

@felineflutter What parts of Birmingham are you going to?! I got to Birmingham (in normal circumstances) dozens of times a year and have never witnessed anything like that. They are dodgy bits, sure, but that's true of any city.

Someone up thread mentioned Aldeburgh in Suffolk. Are you kidding me? That would be on the most overrated list!

I like Poole. Often overlooked because of Bournemouth.

ArcheryAnnie · 12/05/2021 23:55

@Littlecaf

Halifax! Have you seen the Piece Hall! And Eureka is fab too.
One of my bucket list things is to see the Piece Hall.
Lupinhere37 · 13/05/2021 00:01

Penarth, just outside Cardiff. Really wish I lived there.
Really agree with all the people saying Swansea too.

felineflutter · 13/05/2021 00:02

@cornishgem1973 I have had the pleasure of having to go to B'ham 3 times a week for 2 years and the worst area is around the Hippodrome up to Grand Central.

CounsellorTroi · 13/05/2021 00:02

Monmouthshire.

jollyho · 13/05/2021 00:13

Shocked to see the Wirral mentioned.
I’ve heard there’s lovely bits but being married to a Wirralian, just no. Overrated if anything.

However, Liverpool, Portsmouth, and the isle of Purbeck are my favourite.

MargaretFraggle · 13/05/2021 00:17

Southampton.

MargaretFraggle · 13/05/2021 00:20

I wouldn't say that Liverpool, Leeds, Suffolk or the Isle of Purbeck were underrated. Great places but everyone knows that surely!

PrincessFiorimonde · 13/05/2021 00:27

@Carlottagiudicelli

Ashford. Went there recently expecting not much, loved it.
Seriously??
WhipperSnapperSteve · 13/05/2021 00:28

@WaitinginVain

wheresmymojo, so sick of the Stoke knocking. It’s a brilliant place, the friendliest people. Don’t believe all you hear.
Totally agree duck GrinGrin
ArcheryAnnie · 13/05/2021 00:29

jollyho glad to see some more love for Portsmouth.

Sadieeloise5687 · 13/05/2021 00:32

Carshalton - it’s gorgeous but suffers due to its horrid neighbour Croydon

Lndnmummy · 13/05/2021 00:32

Bristol

LuluJakey1 · 13/05/2021 00:33

@Unescorted

Eden Valley & Howgills.
The Eden Valley is staggeringly beautiful.
LuluJakey1 · 13/05/2021 00:37

Anything north of Barnard Castle but particularly;
The Durham Dales and North Pennines
Northumberland - all of it, absolutely beautiful
Newcastle - canny Newcastle

I love this area as well, and anywhere I've been in North Wales. Not sure it's underrated though, there are plenty of tourists in Summer.
