Underrated places in the UK

I enjoyed reading the thread on overrated places (so strictly this is a TAAT, sorry) but would love to know where in the UK people think is underrated.
Mine is Nantwich. I'd live there like a shot.

Belfast - fantastic place, lovely people

Retford
Lovely Georgian market town, wonderful park, clean river for paddling, nice independent shops and eateries. Mayflower history, interesting churches.
Windmills, countryside, great golf course, canal. Excellent transport links via east coast mainline station. Country parks like Rufford and Clumber. Idle valley nature reserve.

Carlottagiudicelli · 12/05/2021 22:36

Ashford. Went there recently expecting not much, loved it.

mrsmadevans Abergynolwyn is quite unknown I would say. My children used to love swimming in the river there. Great summer show too (if you like that sort of thing).

Birmingham
The Quantocks/Minehead area

WitchSharkadder · 12/05/2021 22:39

Nice to see Hull get a few mentions. If you just get over the reputation and look there's a city steeped in history, culture and some really lovely independent businesses.

There's also so really nice little spots all up and down the East Yorkshire coast with beautiful beaches and scenery.

BackforGood · 12/05/2021 22:42

Agree with
Birmingham
Nantwich
The Wirral

I've never been to Hull - might have to now Smile

Poorlykitten · 12/05/2021 22:45

Don’t go to Hull.

Littlecaf · 12/05/2021 22:49

Halifax! Have you seen the Piece Hall! And Eureka is fab too.

HettytheHoover · 12/05/2021 22:51

Leicester.
Amazing and so unexpected- second richest city in Europe in the 1890s for nice buildings and parks (although I think some areas are not so rich now)

Dashel · 12/05/2021 22:54

I used to travel around Derbyshire a lot and most of its stunning but Bakewell and Ashbourne are tourist traps and full of visitors.

A lot of County Durham is stunning and a lot of people don’t really know it, Teesdale in particular and so quiet. In fact a lot of the North past the M1 is pretty quiet.

Eden Valley as previously posted is stunning.

@NommyChompers

Leeds!
Hmm

Leeds is an absolute pit of despair and deprivation.

SkodaKodiaq · 12/05/2021 23:00

@Tish008

Harrogate
Another Harrogatonian?? 🙋🏼‍♀️
SanFrancisco49er · 12/05/2021 23:00

Swansea, Gower and Pembrokeshire. I'd take them all over Devon/Cornwall/Dorset any day!

Youaremysunshine09 · 12/05/2021 23:02

Glasgow. Brilliant city with so much to do & the people are amazing Smileyes I am a Glaswegian but would still think this if I lived elsewhere lol

SkodaKodiaq · 12/05/2021 23:02

@queenisdead

Filey.
But....there's nothing there? Besides Reighton Sands Caravan Park (which we're going to on Monday!) and a few shops? I agree it's absolutely beautiful but I struggle to see it as underrated compared to some places
Thewiseoneincognito · 12/05/2021 23:04

Shrewsbury / Shropshire on a blue sky day gorgeous!

Liverpool fresh air and good shops

Leeds brilliant city centre

CasparBloomberg · 12/05/2021 23:09

Another that just came to say the whole of Northern Ireland. Stunning scenery, beaches, mountains, huge skies and the loveliest towns and cities.

Also the East coast of Scotland, pretty much anywhere there. Everywhere we went was fantastic, beautiful, felt like Cornwall before it became overrun with tourists.

ghostyslovesheets · 12/05/2021 23:12

The Wirral - especially New Brighton - love it even if it is/was a run down resort - seems to be picking up now - even saw film of Rebel Wilson filming outside my old flat!

felineflutter · 12/05/2021 23:17

Can't believe Birmingham is getting a mention. Lived here as a student and spent a lot of time here recently. I never feel safe have been approached many times and had to get to safety.

Seen drug deals whilst waiting for DF every week and human excrement outside naice theatres.

Homelessness is out of control. Birmingham City Council seem unable to help.

The streets are absolutely filthy.

Harrassed outside cash machines by aggressive men. Sworn at (stupid cunt) by a man in stairwell of car park with children as I wouldn't hand over cash.

I could go on...

WaitinginVain · 12/05/2021 23:22

wheresmymojo, so sick of the Stoke knocking. It’s a brilliant place, the friendliest people. Don’t believe all you hear.

5foot5 · 12/05/2021 23:22

the Staffordshire part of the Peak District which in my opinion is far lovelier and quieter than other parts. Also Staffs, the Rudyard Lake area

I agree and am pleased so many others appreciate this bit of the Peaks. Of course lots of the Peak District is lovely but most of it is well known so doesn't really count as underrated. Some great walks in Staffs though. I am particularly fond of the Roaches and Chrome Hill is a fine walk.

We walked around Rudyard Lake just Las Sunday! Another favourite

Overdon · 12/05/2021 23:23

The Yorkshire Wolds, gorgeous villages and lovely gentle walks, would move there like a shot if I could. Handy for the coast. Lovely tranquil feel about the area.

Mumof1andacat · 12/05/2021 23:25

Somerset. Part of the west country but with Devon and Cornwall seemingly so popular it never gets a look in. So much to see and do there.

Cowbells · 12/05/2021 23:26

Newcastle. Gorgeous, spacious, cheap Victorian houses, stunning town centre and riverside. Great culture - loads of galleries, theatres and music venues. Great shopping. Really short drive out to the best beaches and countryside in UK. Lovely accent.
