AIBU?

Is this a scam? Stranger has screenshot of call

Someone called me from an unknown mobile number and I answered. They asked who they were speaking to. I said they should know as they called me. They said they were calling me as they had a missed call from me earlier. I said no I hadn't called them. I said let's put it down to a misunderstanding.

Then they texted me a screenshot of my call to them but I definitely didn't call as I didn't even have my phone with me at that time (it was in another room, charging) and my phone doesn't show a call to that number.

AIBU to think this a scam? If it is, is it the person calling me or is it possible someone else has called them using my number?

@Lockheart

It's not a scam. Someone trying to call them has spoofed your number.

That's just what I was about to type. The person who contacted the op is a potential victim, not a scammer.

Someone spoofed my number and I had to phone BT to get it sorted. Had a day or so of calls from very annoyed people.

It really is getting to the point that your number isn't your own.

I had this too and the spoofer kept trying to call the person. I ended up having to block them as they started sending me really abusive WhatsApp messages and it was nothing to do with me!

I remember dialling the wrong number (my mum's number is easy to remember but when she first had her phone I used to confuse a couple of the digits) then realising as it came up on the screen, then hanging up straight away. Then dialled the correct number and got my mum.

The guy who I accidentally phoned called me back and was really cross and self-important. "Hello, hello, I had a missed call from you." He seemed to find it really hard to believe I had misdialled. Twat.

This happened to me in March.
It was a girl on the other end, a bit giggly, there was someone else with her. She said I'd rang her and then sent me the screenshot, which I've still got.
I just presumed it was some sort of scam and blocked the number.
Kind of glad someone else has experience of this.

This happened to me two weeks ago except I received the call and sent the screenshot!

I've now had several calls from different unknown mobile numbers today. I picked up the last one and it went dead right away.

mummyof4kids · 11/05/2021 16:32

I get missed calls from mobile numbers on a daily basis now. I never answer, if it's genuine they'll leave me a message.
As someone else had said I've had a call from a number identical to mine bar one digit

Auto call. ignore,it's definitely a scam, forward if you can to fraud team

I wouldn't do this. The poor person has nothing to do with this scam. There's no point in forwarding this to a fraud team.

Sometimes when I call my partner it connects to a random guy its sooooo strange. It's only happened about 5 times in absolute years luckily. So it shows I rang him but he doesn't have a call.

QuestionableMouse · 11/05/2021 19:40

I had this with EE a few weeks ago. Rang their customer services and they reset something. Basically the mobile version of crossed lines 😂😂

KizzyMoo · 11/05/2021 19:40

Apparently it's something wrong with his network. A glitch somewhere. It's always the same man.

I’m in Australia and had the same thing happen on Saturday night. I thought it was work as it came up unknown. When i answered the guy was demanding to know who I was as I called him. I’m so glad I’ve seen this thread as I’ve been wondering about it since!
