AIBU?

Is this a scam? Stranger has screenshot of call

Someone called me from an unknown mobile number and I answered. They asked who they were speaking to. I said they should know as they called me. They said they were calling me as they had a missed call from me earlier. I said no I hadn't called them. I said let's put it down to a misunderstanding.

Then they texted me a screenshot of my call to them but I definitely didn't call as I didn't even have my phone with me at that time (it was in another room, charging) and my phone doesn't show a call to that number.

AIBU to think this a scam? If it is, is it the person calling me or is it possible someone else has called them using my number?

I’m in Australia and had the same thing happen on Saturday night. I thought it was work as it came up unknown. When i answered the guy was demanding to know who I was as I called him. I’m so glad I’ve seen this thread as I’ve been wondering about it since!

Apparently it's something wrong with his network. A glitch somewhere. It's always the same man.

I had this with EE a few weeks ago. Rang their customer services and they reset something. Basically the mobile version of crossed lines 😂😂

Sometimes when I call my partner it connects to a random guy its sooooo strange. It's only happened about 5 times in absolute years luckily. So it shows I rang him but he doesn't have a call.

@mogsrus

Auto call. ignore,it's definitely a scam,forward if you can to fraud team

I wouldn't do this. The poor person has nothing to do with this scam. There's no point in forwarding this to a fraud team.

I get missed calls from mobile numbers on a daily basis now. I never answer, if it's genuine they'll leave me a message.
As someone else had said I've had a call from a number identical to mine bar one digit

I've now had several calls from different unknown mobile numbers today. I picked up the last one and it went dead right away.

This happened to me two weeks ago except I received the call and sent the screenshot!

This happened to me in March.
It was a girl on the other end, a bit giggly, there was someone else with her. She said I'd rang her and then sent me the screenshot, which I've still got.
I just presumed it was some sort of scam and blocked the number.
Kind of glad someone else has experience of this.

I remember dialling the wrong number (my mum's number is easy to remember but when she first had her phone I used to confuse a couple of the digits) then realising as it came up on the screen, then hanging up straight away. Then dialled the correct number and got my mum.

The guy who I accidentally phoned called me back and was really cross and self-important. "Hello, hello, I had a missed call from you." He seemed to find it really hard to believe I had misdialled. Twat.

It's not a scam. Someone trying to call them has spoofed your number.

I had this too and the spoofer kept trying to call the person. I ended up having to block them as they started sending me really abusive WhatsApp messages and it was nothing to do with me!

It really is getting to the point that your number isn't your own.

@Lockheart

It's not a scam. Someone trying to call them has spoofed your number.

That's just what I was about to type. The person who contacted the op is a potential victim, not a scammer.

Someone spoofed my number and I had to phone BT to get it sorted. Had a day or so of calls from very annoyed people.

This is a new scam. The scammers are somehow cloning your number to phone people. I don't know the reason behind it though. Recently I had a call from a number identical to mine bar one digit and I've heard that's also a scam.

The person you called isn't scamming you.

The scammers spoofed your number and tried to scam them. It's pretty common and I wouldn't worry about it.

@JoshJoshJosh

Someone is spoofing your number. I had this last year on multiple occasions. I just told people calling back to block my number. Reported it to EE (my carrier) they were useless and their only solution was to change my number!

EE can't do anything about it. It's not them spoofing your number and unlikely to be a customer of theirs doing it.

As an example of how easy it is to do, pay £2 per month to Skype and you can make calls from your computer (or phone or iPad or whatever) to someone's landline or mobile and have whatever number you like appear on their screen when you do it.

It wouldnt surprise me that this isnt a way to get important information out of you. If they can put a name to a phone number, by asking you, and maybe other information, they could be 'mining' you. Thats where scammers look online etc to get as much info on a person before the final big scam. They could also sell your number now it is linked to a person on the dark web.

This explains a lot! I had a missed call from a mobile last week and returned the call as I was actually expecting a call from someone and thought it must be them. A very annoyed man who had obviously been woken by my call answered and insisted he hadn’t rang me. I apologised - then blocked the number.

It's called spoofing - google it.

It happened to me. I was getting loads of people text me like 'who are u, why did you call me?' But it wasn't me calling them.

It stopped after a few days but was so annoying as some people were getting really annoyed at me.

The real scammers clone people’s numbers, so it genuinely will look like they had a call from you! It’s not them who’s doing the scam, if that makes sense.

I’ve had this happen where it was the first half of my own number and second half was all different combos (eg 0123 456 / 0123 789 / 0123 678 etc) Everyone I rang was baffled as they had not rang me. 🤣🤣

This happens to me too. They are not scamming you, someone is trying to scam them using your number as a cover.

I had a call from a puzzled sounding man last week. I am self employed so answered expecting an enquiry. He said "Who is this?" I repeated my company name. He asked me why I had called him and I laughed, he had called me. He said he had missed a call from me.

After a bit of to'ing and fro'ing it turned out that my number had called him a few times and he wondered who I was. We worked out that it was probably a scam and my number was being 'spoofed' and working out that he wouldn't ever need to hire me, he blocked me!

I have no idea if it is happening anywhere else or how to stop it if it is!

I work on the principle that everything's a scam, it almost cost me a free weekend to Berlin but I'm sure it's saved me much more!
