Fine for parking at Pure Gym

OldCow1 · 08/05/2021 20:40

Son paid day membership. Parked for 1 hr 05 mins, thought he had 2 hours free parking with the day membership. Now has fine. Appealed with membership pin and has come back fine stands. They’ve not explained what he’s done wrong. Aibu to think they should spell out where he went wrong?

Why did he think he had 2 hours free parking?

OldCow1 · 08/05/2021 20:44

Says on it

You often have to type your reg no into a machine, inside the gym, to register for the free parking.

shouldistop · 08/05/2021 20:45

It says on the membership? Did he follow any instructions like registering his car etc?

OldCow1 · 08/05/2021 20:50

No idea, but surely most places if you prove you paid to be there and were allowed to park, set it straight on appeal if you failed to see the thing where you had to put your reg in

Even NHS and hotels do that

OP posts:
TakeYourFinalPosition · 08/05/2021 20:56

They don’t around here - we’ve got a few hotels with that system and big signs near the machine that say they won’t correct it if you don’t do it. I only know this because DH forgot once and had to pay the fine, and it irritated me because I’d warned him Angry

It may well depend where you are though!

Rillington · 08/05/2021 20:58

You have to follow the instructions. If he had to enter his registration into a keypad and he failed to do it then they won't cancel it.

OldCow1 · 08/05/2021 21:03

Blimey! You’re all on their side then?

OP posts:
Lou98 · 08/05/2021 21:05

@OldCow1 it isn't really about being on sides - the pp's are just explaining why they're upholding the fine

Penistoe · 08/05/2021 21:08

There are a few forums about fighting parking fines etc that are very useful. You are probably better off there. Hope it gets resolved it is frustrating.

mlj123 · 08/05/2021 21:08

I've no advice only sympathy. The exact same thing happened to my dp. He was paying £50 a month for another gym and when his membership ran out we thought it might b an idea to try a cheaper gym and save some money. He went for one day, stayed in the car park a few minutes too long and ended up with a parking fine. That one day ended up costing more than his months membership at his original gym🤦‍♀️and to top it off he didn't like the gym and ended up renewing his membership at his original gym. Was an expensive day pass. 😂

It's not about sides. It's about how parking is managed on busy sites such as this.

Maybe the person behind the desk in the gym had previous experience of dealing with earnest folk waving their arms around saying they didn't see a sign etc, so they outsourced it to a firm who would manage it for them.

So they have spelled out what he did wrong? He neglected to punch in his registration, or "failed to see it", if you will.

It is a harsh lesson, for sure.

Have a look at some of those parking fine help boards, can't hurt to ask there (I understand they can get a bit blunt)

Good luck.

toocold54 · 08/05/2021 21:16

It sounds like he should get free parking but as PPs said he may have failed to follow the instructions properly eg putting in the reg plate. I’d find out exactly what you needed to do before making a complaint.

I got a fine as I put my reg in one digit wrong I appealed as I had only had the car a few days and had a printed ticket too and they let me off.

OldCow1 · 08/05/2021 21:25

Flibberty Gibberts, no, theyve said nothing as to where he went wrong. I’m just guesssing

OP posts:
toocold54 · 08/05/2021 21:30

I would firstly check what he needed to do and what it says on the ticket/sign and then complain.
If it doesn’t say he has to do anything then that is your complaint - you can ask exactly why the appeal got rejected/what he did wrong as the ticket says 2 hours free parking and it didn’t say you needed to do anything else.

BoredatHome321 · 08/05/2021 21:36

It literally says on the pure gym website that you have to enter your car reg in to be eligible for the free parking, they should probably give an explanation though, surely they did on the first letter?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/05/2021 21:46

It's not free at all gyms. At mine if you enter your reg you get some sort of discount off 2hrs of parking. He needs to check what the arrangement is at his gym and make sure he followed it.

It would not be unreasonable of him to get back to them to ask them to explain what he did wrong.

purplecorkheart · 08/05/2021 21:55

I am not being horrible but assuming your son can drive and park surely it it up to him to investigate the issue? Does he really need his mom taking offence when people give real world/sensible advice (not to your taste)?

I mean this ^^

And also Pure Gym may have a third party who regulate the car park and they would have issued the fine. So you ... or you know your actual son may need to speak to them.

Regardless of who operates it they will need to provide proof of overstaying so ask them for it and photograph the parking sign in the car park and their terms and conditions which also stated 2 hours.

Newkitchen123 · 08/05/2021 22:31

Must depend where you are. I'm a member of pure gym but it's not somewhere you'd park if you weren't at the gym so we dont have that system in place it's just free.

BoredatHome321 · 08/05/2021 22:35

@Hiddenunderthefloor the thing is though, if he didn't put in his reg then ultimately it's his fault. At our gym we have a car park that gives you a chip, you scan it at the gym and it makes the parking free. If you forget, you forget and you have to pay, unless you want to make the long walk up the stairs againGrin

We used to have that at my PG but then they got rid of it. No idea how they checked for parking over 2 hours now.

It’s the coming down the stairs that does it for me Grin
